आल- विलक्कु अनेक भारतीय लोक-संस्कृतियों में, विशेषतः जहाँ दीपक अनुष्ठानिक प्रक्रियाओं और प्रदर्शनों से जुड़े हुए है, वहां उनकी स्थिति एवं भूमिका गौरवपूर्ण भी है | पारंपरिक तौर पर दीपक न केवल उज्जवल जीवन एवं ज्ञान के प्रतीक माने जाते है बल्कि उनके जरिये समुदाय द्वारा शुभ विचारों की सौन्दर्यपूर्ण अभिव्यक्ति भी घटित होती है | केरल के मन्नार ग्राम के धातु कलाकारों के एक समूह द्वारा लॉस्ट वैक्स तकनीक द्वारा इस पारंपरिक दीपक का निर्माण किया है | बरगद के पेड़ की तरह निर्मित इस दीपक की उंचाई 15 फूट, वजन 1830 किलोग्राम है तथा कुल 1001 दिये निर्मित किये गए है| मलयालम भाषा में बरगद के पेड़ को ‘आल’ तथा दीपक को ‘विलक्कु’ कहा जाता है| इस प्रकार इस दीपक का नाम ‘आल-विलक्कु’ रखा गया है| 1001 बातियों युक्त इस दीपक को 13 विभिन्न वृताकार सोपानों में बनाया गया है जिनमे सबसे नीचे वाले वृत्त का व्यास 7.4 फूट है जबकि सबसे ऊपर वाले वृत्त का व्यास 4.5 फूट है | इसमें सभी बातियों को एक साथ प्रज्ज्वलित करने के लिए लगभग 18 किलोग्राम घी/ तेल की आवश्यकता होती है | सम्पूर्ण भारत में इस तरह के केवल दो ही दीपक उपलब्ध है | इस संग्रहालय के अतिरिक्त इसी तरह का एक और दीपक केरल राज्य के अलप्पी जिले के चेतित्कुलन्गारा ग्राम के महादेवी मंदिर में स्थापित है |
