    Thank you for this. All you need is indeed love. And the only way to get that scale and impact of the Cy Twombys - or Mark Rothko, my personal fave - massive and dominating the room, overwhelming the senses - is dynamic contrast within the music. And that of course is part of what was wrong with the loudness wars, contrast is usually subsumed.

    I remember the demonstration system set up at AMS in Burnley when Calrec moved there. It used KEF 107 head units for the 8 speaker array and a large sub base. One recording in particular was Charles and Diana's wedding. The demo started in mono with a reedy Archbishop through stereo then quad and the crowd outside joined in until full 3D and suddenly you were in St Paul's.

    I've been listening to Andrew Scheps' podcast for the last few months and he's become one of my favorite people in the industry. He's such a kind, generous, and wise human being. He really listens to what others say. And when he does offer his own opinion, it's always from a position of genuine humility.

    projects are never finished, they're just abandoned...otherwise you never finish anything. Wow. "Start mixing it again from scratch and give yourself 3 hours". You'll finish it in 5 hours. Gotta just give up otherwise you never complete anything. "I don't hear anything that needs to be fixed anymore".

    What a wonderfully-mixed piece of video / audio - appropriately, given the subject! The contemporary experiments in surround were quite extraordinarily good to listen to. And as well as ambisonics he published papers on what’s become known as the Gerzon array, a 2-mic technique which I recently used in a commercial project in a difficult acoustic and what an amazing stereo technique that is too. But it’s lovely to see photos of the early tetrahedral arrays. I am using ambisonic recording techniques now and it’s such a great time to be able to expert with these relatively easily (we don’t have to mess around with tape machines, either)! Great cast of audio experts in this video. Thank you.

    I spent 30 years studying, practicing and ultimately, teaching architecture. For the last 6 years, I've devoted myself to music. The most important thing I learned in architecture school about presenting my work was to never apologize or make excuses for it. Ever. Always make your best effort. Never present work that fails to communicate your ideas clearly. Always share what does with as many people as possible. Nothing is ever perfect. Dissatisfaction is part of being an artist. If you make excuses or apologize, you prejudice your audience, and rob them of the ability to evaluate it and form independent opinions of it. If you only release work you consider perfect, you'll never release anything. Strike a balance between the volume of your output and it's craft. and put it out there. Listen to criticism, but don't take it personally. Use criticism to improve your work. Disregard outright insults. They are not helpful. Above all else, make it about the thoughts and emotions you are trying to elicit from or communicate to your audience. If you have something to say, someone will hear it. If it's something profound and beautiful, it will connect with them. If it's well crafted and universal, it will be timeless and important, regardless of it's popularity, because it will be an authentic product of humanity.

    Michael used to come round to my flat in Oxford in the late 80s - I was a DJ and promoter and doing all the Acid House stuff. He was a lovely, beautiful, hilarious man, who never stopped teasing me about the fact I owned copie[s] of 'Dark Side Of The Moon' which he detested :) He loved the new electronica sounds of techno and acid, and made me listen to Pere Ubu, who he was particularly into. I still think of him all these years later, he was a very nice person to me, a rare individual. I never went to university. I'm still an audio engineer. Oddly enough, I bought a Hafler amp yesterday, which has resulted in this recent internet trawl for who Gerzon was - because to me he was a lovely bloke [who was clearly very ill, and many people wouldn't hang with him, simply because it was clear he was so very ill - this did not bother me in the least]. He kept going on about this stereo stuff. He had developed a way of effectively removing vocals from a stereo 2tk, which I was horribly nonplussed about at the time :/ and then he stopped coming round - he must have died. May he rest in peace Thanks for this film.

    In my opinion, John Cage’s 4;33 performed for an audience who’ve never heard of it without context is one of the most silent experiences one can have. The complete absence of a sound (the performer’s instrument) that everybody assumed was coming without a second thought. In that sense, I guess MJ’s technical failure on Black and White was its own 4;33.

  • @ts4gv
    @ts4gv 2 года назад

    andrew sort of glossed over his own audience’s experience of the abridged version of John Cage’s 4;33, probably out of fear of sounding even more “pretentious.” Hearing that piece for the first time & not expecting it is exactly what Cage intended, and that’s what the audience got. Hopefully they didn’t forget their one of a kind experience of the sounds of a quiet audience in a quiet room.
