Assembly tip from someone who learned the hard way: MARK YOUR MAGNETS WITH A SHARPIE! It's too easy to glue them in with the wrong orientation.

No, you don't. The heat shield is printed separately in black and you glue it to the ship afterward

This is awesome. I started modeling my own starship on the computer recently, I went with 1:100 and the its feeling pretty good. Why go with 1:96 specifically, instead of just a round 1:100?
I guess 1:96 is a standard scale in modeling for ships, rockets, and large structures. For example, 32 scale and 64 scale. Add the two, and you get 96 scale.

I love the detail of this model. Very well done! It's unfortunate that the details of the work cannot be appreciated once built though.
