Rail Transport Around The World. Trains. Buses. Ferries. Roads.
This channel had videos on trains and metros around the world - primarily in Australia - while "BackTracks.Channel" focusses primarily on street based "rail" transport like trams / light rail / trolleys / street cars / .
It's a hobby channel - not a professional gig as we have 'day jobs'. So the videos on this channel are not meant to be 100% accurate historical records but rather a fond look back at transports systems that in hindsight we should have never closed down or are pretty interesting in their own right.
Having said that we do try to ensure it's factually correct by using multiple sources from what we think are credible books, websites, blogs and articles. (and a bit of our own knowledge). And we do welcome corrections from viewers - it's really helpful thanks.

Prompted by the news from Sydney Metro that Canterbury Station was the first station to have all its screen doors in completed. I thought it would be a good time now to check on progress of the conversions of the T3 Bankstown Line to the 3rd Stage of the Sydney Metro M1 Line.

Australia's capital cities generally have just one centrally located railway station where regional and inter city / inter state passenger trains arrive and depart from. So when Australians like myself visit London we are blown away by the fact that the city doesn't just have 1 'Central' station but has (and depends how you count them) over 14 'Central' railway stations. Come along with us as we look at the new Victoria Cross Metro Station in North Sydney, Australia during its first public open day. Victoria Cross is a future underground automated rapid transit station, located beneath the central business district of North Sydney, Australia. The station forms part of Transport for NSW's Sydney Metro City & Southwest scheme. It is scheduled to open in 2024. Syd...
About the topic at 3:13 I would add the Yellow Line of the Sao Paulo Metro in Brazil. Believe it or not, it opened in 2010 and also has platform screen doors.
Totally unnecessary project. Will disturb the whole network west of Bankstown. $1bn wasted. Could have been spent on light rail somewhere else.
when is it expected to complete? still September 2025?
Good question. There is surprisingly little media about this project at the moment - and the web site for METRO has no update (infact there is not that much news worthy news on that site). So my guess is that they are slightly behind as they said all Platform Doors would be in by end of November. But not enough to delay opening as yet. I reckon well get an update before end of Jan as they will be need to be announcing train testing before / about that time.
That really depends on NSW government, the same delays we saw with Chatswood to Sydenham are likely
Hey Marty, I’d like to compare answers for that tidbit about 5 spots in sydney where you can have a shot with a train and tram: Circular Quay, Central from Chalmers, Dulwich Hill, Longport St in Summer Hill and Parramatta looking south on Church St? From Google Maps, not really sure if I can see a tram from the south ramp at Westmead and if we’re including the new line!
Hey great catch. I had put the 5th location actually as Loftus tram museum / Loftus Railway Station. But I think you may be right.. I reckon we probably could get a shot at Westmead. I did consider the Church Street shot.. but from memory I couldn't get a shot of it.. but a challenge! When I am next out there (trying to get there in my hols before having to go back to my day job) I will see.. if you see first... please share.. good fun.
Nice update. Appreciate the time you've taken to put together the update on all the stations.
Thanks for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I grew up down that way, but not been back really for many years so enjoying looking around this part of Sydney again. And the best part of this new metro is that it is all 'above ground' so easy to watch progress.
One of my disappointments is around the non-underground stations. If you happen to be near an underground station, you are protected from the heat, cold, wind and rain. However if your metro station is above ground, there will only be a few doors that will be near some protection. This may cause bunching up and not delivering the efficiency of passenger boarding as per the underground stations. Spend $$$$$ on underground stations, and passengers will have an awesome experience; spend cents on above-ground passenger comfort.
You have a point here. On hot or rainy days, passengers in the above-ground stations will be concentrated under whatever overhead shelter / canopies that are available. In many of the above-ground stations, that is a small percentage of the complete platform. It is likely many considerations have gone into this compromise; cost, compatibility with heritage design, cost, additional time to construct, and cost 😉.
Thanks for your thoughts. Be great if all were underground agree! And good point re bunching. I have generally thought transport planners 'evenly' space out entrances and exits of platforms to 'even out' where passengers want to stand. But maybe not that much thought goes into it? I have noticed now overseas some transport apps are showing which carriage to get into for your exit station / and number of people per carriage.
Hi Marty, thanks for the update of progress of this particular line. They seem to be doing an excellent job. It will be interesting seeing the Metro extension there finally open. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
Thanks Rob, good to hear from you. Hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year.
As always thanks for the update Marty, nice to see whats been done on the conversion, and it feels great that all the platform doors have been completed. It almost feels like they could finish the stations ahead of time. I'm assuming they must be doing the trackwork at sametime especially if they want to start testing in Feb 2025. I live on the T4 (South) would love to see part or all of our line converted or even T8 ( im in between both lines haha).
Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it.. Lived most of my early life on the T4 catching everyday to High School.. agree I also thought why did they not consider at least the Hurstville all stations tracks to be metro.. would have been great eh! but then thought with all the freight using the T4 they would need the flex of 4 lines all the way?
@@BackTracks.SideTracked I think thats the main sticking point the freight train and pretty much only space for dual track to Wolli Creek unless they re-align the whole thing. Alternatively my idea why not tunnel from Oatley to Sydneham . They would need to build a bridge across Georges River if they wanted to start somewhere on the otherside Sutherland? Not sure they can tunnel under the river probably be too much of big climb for the metro to connect up to hurstville or maybe a totally different route Sutherland >Peakhurst > Hurstville > Kogarah > Rockdale (? Might be too close) Wollli Creek > Sydneham
Good thought re a tunnel. I wonder though maybe instead of a line duplicating an existing corridor they could take pressure off that line by building one to a nearby alignment - ie a light rail or metro along the former F6 corridor from Dolls Point through Scarborough Park etc to the airport and into SE Sydney... maybe even connect up with the METRO WEST line?
@@BackTracks.SideTracked that would be good idea they need some form of rail along there in Brighton Le Sands up to Dolls Point light rail would be idea. My other thought is we could be like melbourne and up it all up in there air haha
Looking good. What do you think are the chances of hitting the deadline?
Ha, million dollar question.. actually probably more than that as the contractors would get penalties I guess if they don't reach deadline.. my completely uneducated view is that the stations seem to be nearly ready.. and that platform barriers are in place suggests they will start running trial trains on time in Feb.. while they do internal station / platform works and Bankstown buildings. I think they are on track.. and governments build in 'fat' to timelines these days..
There are always snags, I work in a site office and not even I know why things happen as they do, testing was due to start in December but often it's out of our hands while we wait for decisions from Sydney Metro and Sydney Trains. We as a private company can have a schedule that makes sense but we can't assume government will agree until after we've started constructing and they give their input
Thanks Marty for the wonderful pictures in 2024, Happy new year cheers bob.🥳🍺🍻🍷🍾🎆🎊
Thanks for watching Bob and a happy new year to you too. Just finished the video in time for a whole lot of people to come over for NYE at our place.. Looking forward to 2025. In terms of transport...opening of the Bankstown Metro will be good.. and first sod turned on the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2!.
Question: is Cantebury , Hurlstone park and Lakemba stations getting a makeover ?because it looks shockingly outdated compared to the new metro stations
Good question. And best see the metro website for details but the station platform buildings look pretty much unchanged in the mock up images. But the street level buildings generally seem to be getting makeovers.
Thanks for this. Very useful.
Thanks for watching. Appreciate it.
Thanks for the video. I've been circulating around bankstown the past 2 days and had no idea what was going on, glad that a nerw entrance for the metro is being built
Thanks for watching. Yes it’s going to be great for Bankstown creating a stinger link between the north and south side of the centre. I think in time it will move the epi centre of the city centre to around this new plaza.
No shade, or is that later?
Yes, it doesn’t look like they’re building any more overhead structures on platforms
Anything is better than Sydneytrains aka Stupidtrains or Shittytrains
You upload video last week like this?
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it. For the Bankstown metro I seem to have got into a pattern of a video each month.. I do some of my work down that way - so when I am working down there i take videos if I can.
Quality video
What about Campsie?
Thanks for the question a bit like Marrickville I haven’t been able to find a good vantage point to film. I need to give myself more time there to find a good spot. I’ll have an update in my next update thanks for watching.
I am really looking forward seeing Bankstown plaza the renderings look really cool and great work with progress of screen doors & stations. As always marty appreciate the update. Side note everytime I hear the intro "I'm marty" your voice throws me back to the 90's "Round the twist " Tv show haha yes I'm very old.
Thanks. yes the Bankstown plaza I think will really positively change Bankstown.. bringing the north and south together. Ha, assume there was a Marty in 'Round The Twist' will so some investigating :)
Hi Marty, thanks for the update on the Bankstown line progress. Interesting seeing all the changes there. Incidentally, has there been much progress made at Marrickville station? I favour that station a bit, due to previously living in Marrickville until mid 1981. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
Thanks for watching. I have only got to Marrickville once (the day after closure). and I couldn't find a good spot to film the platforms from - as the station is in effect in a cutting and there are building all around blocking the view - so hadn't gone back - but I should go back with some more time on my hands to see if there is a better vantage spot.
Maybe the Station Street entrance could provide a bit of a view. There used to be a clear view from the Illawarra Road overhead bridge years ago, though that was before the station was upgraded.
They have now reopened the pedestrian path running down the station, from where you can see a decent amount, but it is a bit obscured
Thanks both for the tips. Really appreciate it. I’ll definitely head down there when I next get an opportunity. Certainly will visit before Christmas.
Great thanks Marty.👍👍👍👍☕🍩
Glad you enjoyed it. I used to go and visit transport construction like this and just look and then realised I should film it. So I enjoy making them.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked Keep doing it your vids are very enjoyable cheers Bob.🍺🍺
Came acros this channel today - and as a public transport enthusiast, I love it! Hope you keep going! :)
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching.
Let's hope when it's opened there aren't aboriginal flags all over it.
oh ffs!!!
The only thing I worrt about is Australian workmanship - lets hope jobs are done well, and we wont have the same problems as the Parramatta Light Rail.
definitely will
No that’s Chinese workmanship mate
Surprised it looks like it’s going to be done on time for once
The word is PRO. Gress not Prog ress don't use dumb American mispronunciation it very annoying
As someone who used Punchbowl station and walks past it every day, those PSD’s have been there for about 2 weeks in the same place, nothing’s happened. I’m probably wrong, but I think the platform is too curved for the PSD’s. 😂
Much safer for the traveller, Will be extremely hot during heat wave conditions due to less airflow and glass amplifies sun light heat. Last, there a bloody eye saw in appearance .
They are no uglier then any other fence. The fences appear to be about 1.5 meters high, it’s going to be difficult to turn them into green houses. One would hope though if the mero is a success proper new stations are built, like on the north side of the line and these minimal conversions are consigned to hisory.
Nice update! Great to see so much work happening so quickly!
Test running of the Alstom Metropolis Car sets will begin in February 2025 on the Sydenham to Bankstown section according to the media reports. The Platform Screen Doors project installation it's running on time and it's Strange to see a rail line built with bricks and mortar that's heritage listed platforms with platform Screen Doors running driverless Metro trains next year in 2025.
Technically metro is heavy rail. We have two heavy rail systems one the suburban and the other the metro
You won’t regret having the metro. Tallowong was easy a brand new line. Great to travel on
When was this filmed given it's been published late in 29 Nov?.. yet talks about all PSDs being complete by end November
Good question. I didn't make that clear in the video. Sydney Metro said on 07.11.2024 all PSDs would be installed by end of November. Most of this video was filmed on 24.11.2024. I only managed to get it published on 29.11.2024. So possibly all the PSDs got installed this past week - but there was plenty still to do at most stations - except Canterbury. And it is hard to get video of Marrickville and Campsie (and parking) so I have not seen these in the recent update. Thanks.
4 Car sets can’t fit 70 people but on Platform 2 In Bankstown they Drive an XPT, XPL or other regional trains. Regional Trains In Bankstown used Platform 2. The Train carriages are 2 Cars, 3 Cars and 4 Cars. and the Regional Trains is Running towards North Sydney and Newtown. Also the City?
Just curious but does anyone know what the chalk markings are that appear to be included on each of the Bankstown line station platforms? I first thought it to be graffiti, but the markings seem to be included on every station platform all the way from Marrickville to Bankstown.
Good question - my guess - either measurement markings or noting underground utilities like power or water on the platforms?
I used to live in Berkshire and get the train into Paddington until I discovered you could buy a single ticket and never left London again.
Loved this series of London terminals. Imagine how big one station in London would have been
surprised there is still so much corridor fencing left they havent got up yet Marty, I would have thought that would be a high priority Like it was at Sydenham but then maybe it can go in a lot quicker than I am imagining and so they can afford to push that back out and work on other priorities
Good question. I wonder if the fencing goes up last as it may get in the way of other works they need to do?
@@BackTracks.SideTracked Maybe, part of me had also wondered if the first testing will happen on say Marrickville-Campsie/Belmore starting earlier than the outer section and that would explain why everything west of Campsie appears to be going slower, but I may be way off with this comment!
Good thought.. all railways have sections.. so perhaps they will do just that...
Also, the Sydney Metro trains are designed to travel at a higher speed than the trains that used to run on the Bankstown line. This means that any curves on the Bankstown rail lines will need to be adjusted so that the new driverless trains will not derail at higher speeds.
Good point. Although from what I have seen in the visits - I have not seen track alignments being altered as yet. But its hard to tell eh as it really only easy to view at the stations as they have overhead structures. The Bankstown line is relatively straight in many parts. So hopefully what track alignment they need to do is isolated. But agree that will take a lot of effort - including all the overhead adjustments. Thanks!
@@BackTracks.SideTrackedmaybe when the metro test on the Bankstown line for first time, if something goes wrong, they going to fix the track before metro test again, that’s why it will take 12 months to complete or more than that.
Great updates mate! Even as someone who lives on the T3 line, I didn’t know about the progress with screen doors at Canterbury, Dulwich Hill, etc before watching this video. 😂
Glad to help!
I love your updates
Thanks! Appreciate it.. for years I used to just go and look at these sort of constructions and then one day I thought.. I should film them and put them on RUclips.. so thanks for enjoying what I enjoy.
Yea btw there is another why it will take 12 or more months than to complete the construction beside the metro testing, because for Bankstown station they are building a plaza between the Sydney train station and metro station which will take longer than upgrading the metro upgrades between Bankstown and sydneham.
Great point.. yes that plaza is a major construction. I have filmed a lot of it on my recent visit (have not had time to put into a fuller video). It's massive.. right now they are digging down now to build foundations. It's a major project I agree.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked and I have a feeling that the plaza might be still in construction while metro continue to operate between Bankstown and sydneham.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked but I feel like they could have extended the metro to sefton, because no need to build a plaza which is a long time, removes the t6 shuttle services, and could have easy interchange with the new t3 line to Liverpool.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked and for sefton, platform 1 should be trains to city circle and Liverpool while platform 2 should be trains to tallawong.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked and I feel like barely anyone will use the t6 line and it’s only for useful for people that lives in yagoona and birrong but if they could have extended the metro to sefton, the people that lives yagoona and birrong will have direct access to to city instead relying on shuttle services and forced interchange on regents park, lidcombe and Bankstown.
Thanks for the update
So is it open?
No way half of Bankstown station has been gone forever.
T6 going to start tomorrow.
Thanks. Yes was at the station today and they were cleaning it - but no signage saying anything to the effect it was opening tomorrow. Be great if is does.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked can’t wait for to see when the metro test on the Bankstown line as soon as they finish connecting the line on the end of Bankstown platform at sydneham metro platforms.
The first train leaves Bankstown Station tomorrow morning at 4:35am
Thanks for the confirmation. Good to see Bankstown station opened again.
@@BackTracks.SideTracked you can go on the trip lidcombe and Bankstown
Reminds me of HK MTR East Rail Line, they're also installing platform barrier on these kinds of cirved stations to also be ready by next year😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the intel.. will look that up. cheers.
Interesting video. Back many years ago, the Bankstown line actually used to connect with Platforms 1 and 2 at Sydenham, when the trains used those particular platforms.
while they just ignore out vote and input about yagoona and birrong , waste money upgrading them just to try to convert it a shuttle bus
I went on the T4 Line for the first time since the Bankstown line closed, and fuck me, them adding 2 additional stops made the journey even longer then it needs to be, even TripView was like switch at Sydenham for Metro to get to city quicker, mind you this was during off peak but at 10.30, but normally before this change it would take me 40min. Also seems like there was no limited stops like there used to be but all stops all day long. like the new timetable is 1hr to get to the city from Cronulla. Havent been on peak yet so idk if that timetable has changed much.
Thanks for the share. What were the two additional stops out of interest? I first thought St peters and Erskineville but just looked at the new map and they aren't put as stations on the T4. As an aside I was at Oatley station on the weekend - first time for many years since I lived there - and was surprised that Cronulla trains stop there now.. when I was growing up all the Waterfall trains stopped there.. it has now swapped... pity as I used to travel always from Oatley to Cronulla in those days.
@BackTracks.SideTracked Yea St peters and Erskineville, they were never part of the T4 line, I think on weekends, it stops at Oatley. I know growing up my friends had to change at Sutherland to get home from Oatley because it never stopped there. I just looked into it "Erskineville and St Peters stations will continue to receive direct services to the Sydney CBD via the T8 Airport & South Line until these stations are moved to the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line permanently" - Article " More Trains, More Services " on the transport website.
hey thanks for the reply. Only had a chance to respond now. yes I was there on the weekend - so that was great.. as a kid I only went to Cronulla on the weekend, while had to go to Hurstville / Allawah to High School on weekdays.. the current timetable would have suited me perfectly back then ;)
I will not be going to Bankstown the metro I don’t travel on transport that doesn’t have a driver
