Pause Screen Adverts - Explained | YouTube, Roku, Amazon Prime ads get more intrusive

These days when I think of pause adverts I tend to think of brands avoiding funding Elon’s X. But unlike this funny and reasonable move, on-pause advertising is, to put it lightly, dogshit. RUclips and streaming platforms are introducing pause adverts. These do exactly what they say on the tin. When you pause your favourite TV show, film or RUclipsr, you’ll be given an advert. Self-service checkouts are failing. Over the last 20 years, retailers have experimented with this technology and at first they were a bit of innovation in an industry that rarely changes. But now shops, stores and supermarkets are scraping self-service. Let’s look at what they were meant to achieve, why they haven’t and the doorman fallacy. 99% of the phones in the world are being tracked by all governments through push notifications. This was confirmed by a US senator, Ron Wydon. Agencies in foreign countries were “demanding” push notification records from the tech giants. Apple has confirmed they've given US and non-US governments this data. I loathe self-checkout. But the awful state of markets in the US is that even more of them are relying on self-checkout--at least in the greater Washington DC area--than during the pandemic. If there are a few machines for individuals who prefer the [in]convenience of having to check themselves out, that's fine. As a primary means of transacting, however, they end up causing more headache than they're worth. Banana.
That's interesting, cuz here in Russia they seem to be working perfectly fine, as they are extremely common and more and more supermarkets implement them over time. That being said, regular checkouts are always available as an option, and in bigger shops with large amount of self-checkouts there's usually a dedicated employee to help people with troubles or for age verification.
I can't write lemon here, because I haven't paused the video. Sorry about that.
Thanks OK, I forgive you 🍋
Very good video, but you need better sound (mic or room)
Thank you dude. For a specific point in the video or generally? 😀 I appreciate the feedback.
Jeff Goldblum is an actor and people love him. I don't know jack about JG, but I do actually read that section...
This comment has made my day. Thank you 😊
There's going to be a massive class action as a result of this, I suspect.
What are you suing? The company won't exist and they had the right to sell it in the terms 😐
We have self checkout and cashiers. We get to choose. We also have a handheld scanner with us while we walk around and pick our wares. I grab an item from the shelf, scan it and put it in my bag. At the end, I put the scanner in a charging port and scans itself in. I swipe my card and I pay for the wares.
The Lidl I go to just got closed for two weeks and opend again with self checkout added in. I'd say it's not really going away at all in Germany.
Here in Victoria Australia these stupid self check outs are growing in number. Aldi Woolworths et al. May be they are over charging we the customers to maintain their mistakes. Would fit with Victoria Australia

Love this 😅
Wait you mean having one underpaid employee half-assedly keep an eye on 10 checkout Lanes at one time doesn't prevent people from stealing? I'm shocked. Well not that shocked. It's funny how many people who don't steal think that everybody is like them. Just because in your area it hasn't failed yet doesn't mean it won't eventually. Human nature is human nature no matter where that human lives.
I mean, cameras are everywhere, the question is whether or not the police actually bothers to arrest the criminals. You can't blame human nature for lack of law enforcement, since that's equivalent to saying that people in places where proper law enforcement exists are less human.
life game me lemons so i squeezed them in my eyes for a refreshed prospective
That's the only appropriate thing to do 🍋
I'm pretty sure that installing 60 giga-watt pulse lasers in the self service section will make them work.
Although I agree with your take, I have found that once I became efficient, I now prefer self-checkout in supermarkets.
Lemon!

This is the only video I like about Big Farmer! (Not Big Pharma)
Big Farmer is such a problem 🙄 😅
Anyone who willingly flung their spit at such an enterprise (for what???) is a fool. Also, wearing a 'wearable' fitness device means sharing that data in real-time. Just FYI, it serves the same purpose. Pharms are laughing all the way to the bank at y'all's malleability.
Well, descendants of slaves got to see where we were taken from. As far as wearables go, they collect less data than the device you used to write this comment on a service provided by one of the biggest data collection companies on the planet.
if only socks could talk ... LEMON!
LEMON TO YOU TOO 🍋
If only 23andMe could find a bottle with a Genie inside and get three wishes. Any suggestions on what they could be? Nothing raunchy, racy, tawdry, tacky or salacious, please. There may be children watching. Puns and double entendres are welcome if they get past the YT gatekeepers.
As a privacy measure my advice for anyone who ever used 23andMe's services is to scramble their DNA by exposing themselves to gamma radiation. Think of all the money they'll lose!
Thank you. Questions which you may not be able to answer: Will the data be connected to the specific users. (Sounds like it.) I used Ancestry. Do they have privacy agreements? I also used GED match. As users are only identified by a private code I’m not too worried about them. Is there something that Congress, the President or the appropriate US Agency can do about it? Or even courts? Where is 23andMe headquartered? Perhaps this is all something the affected people should worry about. The rest of us are holding our breaths until the election.
Great questions! 1) Yes. The data is connected to someone. And it is only valuable if it is connected to a person (even if it is used for data profiles). 2) I don't know about Ancestry, sorry! 3) So there's always something they could do. But it would open up a can of worms. It would be a government telling a business what they couldn't do and making them change their business model. Which rarely happens. The government would also have to see the damage it causes. And sadly that's always too late.
I did it way back in the start, when you could still get health data. It was accurate then. I do worry about privacy, but then, anybody can get your DNA from anything you touch now, pretty much, if they want to. 🤷 I take pleasure in knowing I'll never reproduce, but they just might reproduce me in some distant future.
Totally. If they were honest in their advertising from the start nobody would have done it. So it's clear why they had it buried in the terms.
banana
My husband wasn’t listening, but when you said self serving asshole, he did a spit take.
Lemon 🍋
Well spotted 🍋🍋🍋
I did 23andme back in 2014, i wish i never had, I wish i instead got my raw DNA code in a private way instead.
Private would have cost more... but that's the constant trade off. Pay more and save your data / privacy. Or go with the easiest option, and give up your most valuable info. No judgement here from me, honestly. They should have made it clearer what they were planning. But then nobody would have done it...
@@simoncaine9515 Thanks for responding Simon! Much respect!
The only reason grocery stores are doing away with self checkouts is theft. Too many people are stealing items on purpose. Said store is loosing lots of money they wouldn’t otherwise. So the cost of not having human cashiers isn’t saving the stores money.
Great video, your pacing, delivery, and editing are superb! Keep it up!
Thank you dude. That really means a lot. See you in the next video 😀
I avoid self-service checkouts these days. They screw up half the time. I've just walked away, leaving everything there when the thing screwed up and needed assistance that wasn't there. Or gone from self-checkout to self checkout scanning the thing that screwed up he first one when there's no staff around, just to make sure that even the staff hate the things. Self checkout is not worth my time nor my effort, especially when I don't get a discount for doing the store's work for them. In fact the local store went 100% self checkout so I went to 100% buying elsewhere.
I haven't had a single issue with them in like 5 years since they were installed in my local supermarket. I'll gladly take the effort of manually scanning everything it it means that I don't have to wait in queue.
Worst part is now, when you pause on amazon the ad plays. It will automatically go to purchase now! So unless you specifically click over to do not purchase, unpause button now purchases the item or subscription on screen!!! Absolutely shiiiiiiiit!
🍌
Walmart moved some of their machines to Guatamala and they seem to be working well here , I was suprised , but people here are different . The people here are very polite to strangers but very often have homicidal relations with their neighbors !
Are the really because I see more self checkout than I do people here in Cali.

My favorite doormen maintain a list of female tenants who want to party.
What a load of rubbish, they are going ten to the dozen in Australia, Poland, Ukraine... seem pretty simple and effective
Somebody tell Morrisons. They've just installed more .
I love self checkout
They failed? This will be news to every single retailer and many fast food joints in my medium-sized US city.
Haven’t failed here, they’re everywhere. And I can’t imagine how much money they’re saving by not paying us to do someone else’s job for them.
This also makes me think of how people hate the automated service when calling businesses and prefer to speak to operators.
They are not failing universally. In Poland they grow in popularity and there is more and more of them. So I assume failure of this technology in UK has more to do witch culture and mentality and less with the technology itself.
In the US, Costco (huge warehouse store where you buy everything in bulk) installed self checkouts without handheld scanners. Which means you have to lift every giant, heavy, item out of your car and scan it on the counter. Then they require you to keep it on the bagging counter! Did I mention everything is huge?!
Self-checkout is the first option I consider most of the time. I don't use them in some stores that have particularly glitchy, inconvenient, or annoying setups. I also avoid them abroad, just in case there are some rules I might be not aware of.
Meanwhile me, going almost daily into a small Store that doesnt even have cash registers. You come in with your card or phone, you take stuff, you leave and then the system calculates the cost. For a Year, I never had a Issue with a system Calculating too much or not letting me in. There is one person Working, that comes by Morning and evening and Replenishes the shelves. Granted, it is a small store but it's a God sent. Maybe it needs a civilized country with a civilized people 😏
Big fan of your sense of humor. Gonna like and subscribe just for more statements like "I don't want to speak for everyone, but I can and I will"
self checkout is a godsend wtf
