Everyday Leather Challenge - How Often Do We Really Use Leather?
Leather works because it's versatile, durable, and sustainable. We constantly hear that "vegan leather" is the future, but what could be more responsible than using the by-product of the meat industry to make a material that supports every part of our day? Check out more info @isitleather to make sure you surround yourself with the most sustainable choice: real leather.

As much as he strives to honor the heritage of Western craftsmanship, he knows the real test is how his saddles stand up to a hard day’s work. Stitching, punching, and cutting till his hands ache, late hours perfecting his time-tested technique-it’s all worth it to know h...

    Very nice haus. You have a very steady hand. Watching you cut was fun. Have you used many different colored threads? If so, was it by request? My daughter in law is getting a belt from me for Christmas. I know she likes blue, and was thinking of using blue thread. I know women like to match as best they can. Obviously, this may hinder her clothing options, just wondering from your experience please. Thank you. May I also inquire what type leather and Oz do you prefer to use as a backing? Thank you again.

    • @BMGeisler
      @BMGeisler Месяц назад

      I've done work with contrasting thread. I've found that unless you use a over-long stitch length and over-large thread, the color tends to get lost in the workpiece. As backing goes, I use 4oz latigo, but it's really up to personal preference.

    • @robertk-qn6mg
      @robertk-qn6mg Месяц назад

      @BMGeisler ok, ty. Very helpful. Length of thread, sounds like it would almost subtract then. What would be an over size thread? (I'm the "5" year old asking why... lol.) How long would be a good length? Thank you.

    • @BMGeisler
      @BMGeisler Месяц назад

      @@robertk-qn6mg I typically sew belts at 6-8 stitches per inch with 207 thread. If I wanted a big contrast I'd go down to 4-5 stitches an inch and bump the thread up to 346. I'd also use a shallower than normal stitch groove.

    This brings back so many memories of the time I tooled belts, handbags, Ranger belts and bullet holders. I drooled over your collection of tooling taps. I had to do the basket weave by hand! And learning the shaders and beaders drove me nuts! So tedious. I can still smell the hide glue. My mentor made me learn to sharpen the cutters before even touching a length of hide. And practice with the scrive knife... Well I won't go there. "Thinner, girl, thinner! And taper that right! I can remember all the blisters I got when I was burnishing the finished edges with a scrap of suede. I grinned when I saw you hand stitching with those double needles. Thank you for some great memories. I grinned through the whole video.☺

    Thanks Ben, I met you in Sheridan this past May, as you were critiquing the geometric stamped saddle that took 1st place. The saddle I ride is a 50-year-old Juan Lara hand-made saddle from Santa Ynez Valley California. Now that I'm nearing 67 years of age, my knees take a beating when I ride multiple days in a row. Thanks for your tips, I've only ever done your process to one other client's saddle in the recent past. So, I'll give it a go on my own saddle. Thanks Partner.
