The Community's Hatred of Level Remakes Must Stop (Geometry Dash)
Geometry Dash players have high expectations of remakes; if they don't like a level remake they will hate on it and harass the creators. They believe this protects the original's legacy, but I will explain why this mindset is harmful for the creating community, and why the negative effects of remaking iconic levels is overblown.

I fundamentally disagree that decoration is unimportant or should be optional. Here's why it deserves to be taken into account in Geometry Dash's rating system. i know im late but what is the first level that you show for effect layouts?
Would you argue that using LDM in Sakupen Hell doesn't make a difference in its difficulty? I really don't want to die at a high percentage due to lag spikes, but because I jumped to this level from a medium demon and have been stuck on it for months, I want to be as legit as possible, claiming I BEAT Sakupen Hell exactly as it is intended to be beaten.

My mom was enjoying the tower until she reached the sewer elevator. She couldn't get past it and was so frustrated that she never finished it.

Is eon considered a layout? Imo layout is a blueprint, and 1.0 levels dont have to be always just a layout, though most of time they are eon reminds me of the gameplay early main levels had but transfered to 2.2 so it uses the 2.2 features (like spider orb) but the gameplay still feels mostly similiar (ending has a bit too high cps imo tho so it slightly loses the feeling) about the deco, the block designs are usualy just single colors blocks with pulses + sometimes small aditions added on them, the background mostly consists of shaders and gradients, its structuring is usualy opened and doesnt make u feel like enclosed in some space, it doesnt have air deco tho i just kinda want to know what others would consider it as cuz i was arguing wtih someone over this

One thing I find interesting is that there is a 2.0 Medium Demon with 4 remakes: Feshery by Namtar. Freshery is just a simple and fun 2.0 level that has aged really well and is a bit on the memory side. Freshery (RoyalP): This first remake is mostly just a simple redecoration of Freshery with a few minor gameplay tweaks. It's not the best level, but it succeeds at what it tried to. Refreshery: This level takes the original level and turns it into a memory level. Out of all of the remakes, this one is the least faithful. However, it still uses the basic progression of the original and uses the same gamemodes for the most part throughout. The most notable ending cube, which was the learniest part the original. However, Refreshery does a completely different take on this part in a way that came to appreciate as I learned it. This level feels like a fresh take on the original. Regenerate: This level is very faithful to the original, excect the gameplay from the drop onwards is way way harder. Like on Refreshery, the last cube here is cranked up to the max. However, this level has a much harder ending cube. Despite the gameplay being inspired by the original, the ending cube is so tough that it feels like a completely new take. Probably my favorite of the remakes. Neophyte: The most recent remake, this level feels like what Freshery would be like if it was a Hard Demon. I don't actually like the gameplay of this level, but it's pretty faithful as a remake.

Hey, I’ve watched this video a couple times, and would love to be interviewed for a video like this! I have 2 creator points, yet about 10 unrated levels that I think are rate worthy, I also have a RUclips channel with almost 1.8k subs.
Okay, I get why people don’t like most level remakes and me personally I’m not really a fan of them either, especially all the sonic wave remakes, but to be hateful about it I agree does not help anything, and is not called for. This is a community of real people, not bots, and humans have actual feelings. We as a community need to start being more human to the community, and that means being respectful to people no matter what our opinions about something might be.
good remake doesn't mean good level, a good level, for me, has to be unique. and when you just give an already existing level realistic deco you've failed in that aspect.

the GD community is the one community with user created levels that seems to actively DISCOURAGE people from making what they want. as some advice for those creators out there: do what you want, make remakes, make sequels, copy a level and decorate it as if it were your own, do whatever you find fun. a community should not be so critical on creativity.
Its probably one of the worst gd video ive seen, first, Is it this hard to not make a remake ? like, a remake is necessarily made for attention, you can't think of making a remake and be convinced that you have a good idea, since it's the idea of another level, the only thing you change is the decoration, so WHY do creator wants us to stop hating remakes as if it had been done out of passion by the creators lmao. creators make levels for the community, if the community doesn't like their level then why blame the community instead of questioning their level

ok so 2.2 is out BUT there is one thing it should have. The static trigger should have a P1 and P2 option. For example, if you’re in a dual and you want to make a cool transition where it focuses on one player. You can do it in 2.2, but I tried using this mechanic in a level and I had to use an invisible object to advanced follow P1 and P2, then make the static trigger follow the invisible object’s group id.

Ok, what I took from this video is that you provide an argument for why remakes are so hated, and the solution is to throw away that mindset of "not being faithful or mantaining the values to the original" but this isnt inherently why most of the community dislikes the large amount of remakes being done lately. The mentallity of remakes needing to be basically just "better versions of the original" is flawed and you are right about that in this video, but thats just one of the problems remakes face as a whole. For many people, remakes are alternate creative stances on a level, and thus, must use the original as a baseline for that creative differences that creators want to put on their levels. In sharp contrast to the "faithfulness" opinion. This, combined with the mentallity you spoke about in your video, causes remakes to be valued less than original levels, mainly because when you make an original level people dont have anything to relate it to for their own criticism, but remakes can be compared to their original which in term makes them have a lesser value in the eyes of basically everyone. This mentality, unlike what you talked about in the video, can't really change, as most creators normally put REMAKE OF X LEVEL somewhere in their level, which causes everyone watching to immediately base their opinion on the original. Instead of complaining about all the negative reviews a level receives (GENUINE negative comments, not hate speech), creators should grow and listen so that their remake is efective at showing what they are capable of while showing respect towards a level, a balance that is delicate and hard to achieve. There are some creators which genuinely are amazing at making remakes, and putting originality and their own creative work into them, differencing both levels in their own way. These remakes usually dont get hate and are usually loved by the community, some examples can include most 1.9 remakes, "flipped" remakes (example: sunset sandstorm) and remakes made in entirely different deco styles from the original. Taking your example, dark dimension, we can trace most of the community's criticism of the level to both mentalities and krmal fans, as "faithful-ers" thought the level wasnt enough like black blizzard, while others thought the level didnt have its own identity and felt soulless. There were also krmal fans and old creators which thought of the level as an insult of krmal's wishes for his levels to not be remade based on quality upgrading (yes gd is free use and you cant copyright your levels and anyone can do whatever they want, but that doesnt mean that they are free of being critisiced for those actions). Imo, if a creator really wants to make a remake, the are 2 ways they could make it, they could make a remake where the level looks basically the same as the original but just with updated decoration added, or a remake which genuinely builds on the original and where the creator puts their creative view into their remake. My point is, this community doesn't hate remakes, we hate bad remakes, those that feel empty and that when you think about them nothing goes through your head. However, even this is totally subjective, as there are people that might like a remake that a lot of others dislike and genuinely think has its own distinctions which others don't see, and that is a respectable opinion which shouldnt be questioned. I feel like this video came short to explain all of the different views people have when thinking about remakes in geometry dash, and it comes off as a video to dismiss all criticism and to let creators do what they want even if it means letting unoriginal remakes made for clout being exempt from criticism. I hope you take my opinion as just feedback and hope you understand the viewpoint of a lot of people that I feel wanted to express too.
@@niroi_ After reading your comment, I am not convinced that this type of remake criticism is justified. It’s the same old argument that remakes inherently cause comparisons between themselves and their inspirations, which means that a remake must do XYZ in order to be considered a “good remake”. I acknowledge that when a person sees a remake, they inevitably think about it in relation to the original, which means that they expect big things from the remake. That doesn’t mean that their mentality is okay, even if they refrain from hate speech. My point still applies here: the GD community would be a better place if people could put their feelings aside; treat remakes in the same manner as they treat standalone projects. Furthermore, you claim that certain approaches to remake creation are “bad” and provide two examples of approaches that are acceptable to you. This is exactly what I argued against in the video. I am opposed to the idea of telling creators what they are/aren’t allowed to do, as putting them in a box seems harmful to the creative community with no apparent upside. I hope I have addressed your concerns with this video and adequately explained why I see no reason to adjust my positions, but I will take another look at your comment to see if I missed anything important.

However, you misinterpreted some of my points, im not saying that the mentallity of comparing a remake to an original is acceptable, im just saying that as human beings, we have pattern recognition and we can recognize when a level is a remake and from which level It deviated from, which inherently (even if you dont realize It) makes us all rank them while adding issues from the original levels. My point is that creators should know that when making a remake (which is totally acceptable) they should consider the fact that people are inherently going to view It as an alternate version of an existing level, and to have the mentality of being creative and making the level into what they Desire without being unoriginal. Ive Also said that the entire argument is very subjective, as there is really nothing to base ourselves on when criticising a bunch of colorful shapes, but, I dont think putting all the burden in the viewer and letting the creator do whatever they want without any feedback or negative review is ethical. If this were true then while more Creative projects would get even better and more Creative, another line of copy paste, mediocre projects would appear, that are just there to get views and to not be played. I understand your point, and I would stand by It if you were a bit more criticical when thinking about what creators see in remakes, as the vision of the creator matters a lot when the community perceives their level, which is why so many remakes which do not endorse creativity are so hated in this game at the moment.

I strongly disagree. Remake creators mean no disrespect when they do this. I believe that this is the most respectful thing one can do, because it shows that they were inspired by the original to make it their own, and not making something soulless for clout.

i think krmal remakes are a bit of an exception because krmal has made it clear numerous times that he doesn't want remakes to be made of his levels. it just seems like a massive spit in his face anytime someone disregards what his opinion is about his own work

Might make a response video if we can figure out voice anonymization that sounds bearable. My very summarized take is this: 1) As in all arguments, there are a wide variety of positions. This is not two monoliths fighting. 2) My perspective is not based on existence of remakes, but rather the amount and kind of attention they get. 3) This is based on a much broader opinion that anyone who calls attention ought to have a good reason for it. 4) Both team announcements and invoking the name of a popular level are disproportionate calls for attention. 5) The scrutiny should be based on the ratio of the effect of the original level on the community vs what the remake either intends to do or has done. Major examples include Abyss of Darkness, Sakupen Circles, The Golden, Edge of Destiny, and Silent Acropolis. On the other end, with something as gargantuan as Bloodbath, it doesn't matter if Little Timmy makes a bad remake (and likely doesn't have the skill to promote it in any large capacity either). Riot's Demise didn't ruin Bloodbath; I think it called far too much attention to itself, but it was more criticized for being a bad level than being a bad remake. All of this also applies to sequels. There is a lot of overlap between the arguments. Although, sequels are _generally_ done better on average (cough cough Avernus) because they're usually directed by someone involved with the original levels.

I wouldn't say remakes are bad, it's just how the remake is made. Bloodlust is literally a Bloodbath remake, yet it is one of the most popular demons on Geometry Dash.

I agree with this SO MUCH. People remake levels and put hours of their time into these projects just for people to hate on them because there not close enough to the original or not as good. I used to participate in a couple of remake before making a few part here and there but 90% of the time i couldn’t finish a single one due to the pressure of people complaining that it doesn’t stand out from the original it honestly hurt A recently finish collab “itsumade” which is a yata remake I have a part in it and i was quite glad that the host able to finish it finally after 4 years but readings the comments is just heartbreaking Because people who commented doesnt know how much work was pull in just trying to finish a level. People who commented dont have to spend hundreds of hours working on a level how can they even understand the hard work

Honestly, if a remake isn't official it could literally be recent tab quality and I wouldn't care. I believe that if it is an official remake then they have a standard to live up to. That being said, if it falls below that standard, feedback exists. You shouldn't send hate to anyone, especially to those remaking a level that you didn't build.
