The University of the Philippines Department of Linguistics was established in August 1922. The primary aim of the Department since its founding is to engage in and promote the scientific study, preservation, and development of Philippine languages through teaching, field research and publication in order to help in recognizing, clarifying, and solving language problems in the Philippines. The Department also has a secondary mandate of improving the teaching of the national languages of Asia according to the needs of the Filipino people. It has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for Foreign Languages by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education.
