Some may say, that matter doesn't belong here at all. And I certainly don't want to spoil your page here, or cause undesired discussions.. But isn't Tehillim itself not crying out loud for that?!... See this: To me, Tehillim is a real Icon of true Judaism. I am a very liberal Christian, but Christianity is Jewish faith just as well. Both had their own development, but I can be very inspired by Jewish views. Tehillim did that more than anything else. It sounds like the pure struggle of the soul for faith. It goes deep, and seems to reveal and reflect the position of the human soul during our existence.. Tehillim may be Reich's best work. Judaism certainly includes (religious-) Zionism: The return to the Promised Land, being the source of all hope. The big question is: how, when, and who? I deeply respect that Zionism, even though I have been an activist for the Palestinians for decades. And I have red many articles by activists (Jewish or not), but I have never seen any critics about religious Zionism itself. They all complain about the behavior of some (but certainly not all) orthodox fundamentalists, or the violent and racist interpretations of Judaism, that arose since the new (secular, non religious) Zionism in Herzl's book "The Jewish State" in 1895. Judaism doesn't support that new 'Zionism'. Religious Jews have been opposed to that. Critisized is not the old religious Zionism, but the suggestion that it supports the Israeli secular-Zionism. Who ever promotes that, is selling Israel's huge crimes in the complete past century, as being part of 'God's plan'. You can add them to the long list of criminals in the history of Christianity for 2000 years.. Back to Tehillim.. It often repeats "Tell no lies!" and "Speak no evil!". Now of course everybody lies, at least now and then. And even those, who think or claim to be honest, may not be very willing to be consious of unwelcome facts. Lying is not really a crime, or forbidden in the Ten Comandments (only slaunder and faul gossip is). But lying in a religious sence is something different. It could mean, lying to yourself, or to what you truely believe in, or lying to others about it. It can mean: Polluting your own soul, or polluting your relationships, and all consequences of that.. "Tell no lies!" and "Speak no evil!".. Now look at the statements of the Israeli Zionists for over a century.. Lying about their own vilolence. Lying about 'self defence'. Lying about their real motives. Lying about their will for peace. Lying about their Apartheid. Lying about Anti-semitism. Lying about the Palestinians, demonizing them in every thinkable way. Lying about the causes of the faillure of all ' peace processes'. And many lies, stating that Judaism or Christianity demand for special support for Israel. Israeli's are not bad people, but they live in a state of complete denial. For half a century they have been voting for extremist parties every 4 years, and then go home and forget all about it. It is a culture of denial. They don't want to know, what is being done in the Palestinian areas, nor of their violent history, nor of Human Rights or the rest of international law about peace. They just care about themselves, and that's it. "We Jews against the rest of the world" is the main line. "Tell no lies!"? "Speak no evil!"? Their willingness to be concious of all relevant matters regarding the Palestinians has sunk so deeply, their honesty isn't worth ten cents anymore. About this they live in a culture, deeply founded on lies. Tehillim may be one of the best mirrors, reflecting from the true nature of Juadism, to the Israeli culture of lies. Tehillim, as one of the best religious protests against Netanyahu, Sharon, and so many others, primarily aiming at the violent expansion of Israel at all costs, ever since 1948. It might be the biggest threat, true Judaism has ever faced.. Tehillim also makes me realise, how deep the suffering among many Jews all over the world can be, because of all this.. In honour of Hajo Meyer here in the Netherlands, being a holocaust-survivor after 10 months in Auschwitz, being the most well known Jewish activist for Palestine. We deeply regretted the corruption in Jewish cultures due to this. In honour of the many really great Jews in the matter like Uri Avnery, Gideon Levy (Ha'aretz), Ilan Pape, Bt'selem, Breaking the Silence and so many others, Finkelstein, Chomsky, or our Dutch Jaap Hamburger or Gate48.. I do hope, Steve Reich understands what he is in the middle of, and what is at steak here.. If anyone wants to open up, now is the moment..

Reich studied gamelan in Seattle in 1973 after Drumming. But of course he should have been interested in Indonesian music before that.

No, the sounds used here are MIDI sounds - bongo is sampled from the Drumming CD.

Steve Reich has never released any official work with AI. He experimented with a lot of electronic instruments and was an innovator in that space. Ensemble uses official recordings, what part sounds off compared to the original composition?

@@smalldotsensemble2058I’m still a little confused for instance by the marimba hits that basically happen every beat. How come they don’t move but other things do? And the pulses move left to right slower than the other things

@@whatisiswhatable For visually monotonous pulses that do not vary in height like a melody pattern, I thought it would be more visually effective to have them clatter in the same position rather than move along the measure. It would be messy if it moved together with the melody pattern. Incidentally, the clarinets, strings and female voices pattern stretches time, but in this visualisation I represented this by slowing the movement rather than extending the width of the measure.
