Great job!!
This is soo good❤❤
I love it! Beautifully smooth playing John
I've heard this in a movie or two, I think haha. Great playing!
Thanks!
And sing it does 🎶
Lovely playing! Can you tell me (I can't quite see from the video), when you play the very fast triplets (like at 0:06 and 0:10), like DOWN-UP-DOWN, do you follow with another DOWN stroke, or do you continue alternate picking with the next note being an UP? That always feels 'wrong' to me, and yet trying to fit in two downstrokes after each other also throws the timing out fractionally. I guess the answer (as ever) is... practice. But do you have any helpful hints?
Thanks. I always follow triplets with a Down. DUDU DUDUD dudDU DUDU DUdud DUDU etc, Or in a jig DUD DUD dudD DUD dudD DUD Etc The exception would be if I was running triplets together, then I might play duddud, or I might play them as dududu. Not all players do this. I was talking to a banjo player recently who, in a jig, follows a triplets with an up.
Part of the reason is to keep the rhythmic structure of the beat, and playing an U after that makes it very difficult. I know Mike Marshall advocates playing an U after a triplet ( DUDU dudUU) but the rhythm of American tunes is different (more like a slightly straight hornpipe to my ears).
Thanks! This is what I figured, and what I try to do, but I sometimes find myself getting slowed by the triplet from going into the next downstroke (although a heavier pick helps). I guess it's probably easier to follow with an upstroke on a banjo because of having single strings. Anyway, practice...
@@johnonmandolinAnd yeah, it doesn't feel as tricky with American stuff as with Irish. Thanks!
@@magicjimbo I don't think the U is the norm on a banjo: I think dudDU would be. But there isn't a fixed rule. I play banjo too, and use the same picking.
Fantastic playing
@@campbell166 Thank you!
The Vanden sounds great. How is the action and playability?
@@Lincoln12933 Hi, yes it's a lovely mandolin, great sound. Action and playability are excellent .
@ That's good. I would like to get hold of a Vanden, but it seems Mike doesn't make many these days. Did you order yours or just get lucky?
@@Lincoln12933 I got lucky. I bought it through Mike but it was second hand. It's actually the one used on his site as a sound sample.
Another great performance John - Keep them coming!
@@AikiSys Thanks. I just keep getting distracted.
Magic 👏👏👏👏🙏🏿

Nice tune. On my favorite Martin Hayes CD.
Well played! Good tune. That's a lovely mandolin you have there. I'd love to know what it is? I currently have an f hole mandolin, but thinking of switching. All the best.

@@nottajedi363 Thanks!
What brand mandolin is that? I like the sound.
@@robertcollard5044 It's Vanden. He does make great sounding mandolins!
Sounds amazing! I bet that would be wonderful as well on an octave mandolin, do you have one?
@@sam-jams6689 Hi, thanks. No, I don't.
Love the Mandolin ,but where's the Banjo ?
@@paulroberts8659 Thanks! I'm pretty focussed on the mandolin these days. I may pick the banjo up again for a bit of volume when out and about.
Love this tune. Have to put it on my to learn list ✨️
Nice! I used to play a jig set on button accordion that started with the kesh followed by the kerfunten and ended up with Eddie Kelly’s. It was a great foot stomping set for sure. I’ve since moved the kesh onto mandolin for fun. You have great tone on your mandolin.
@@mermaid10x thanks. It's a popular jig.
Really nice playing, thanks

Wow
Lovely tune. Check out my channel for more of the same 😊
this picking is insanely clean, it almost sounds like its glitching on beat at parts 🔥 fantastic

Lovely rendition

sounding good John - thanks for sharing 👏👏👏👏
Thank you.
Another well played jig…as played around your area…which is where, out of curiosity?
To be fair, it's played a bit faster than this in session County Tyrone.
Nice jig this one…good, crisp playing and sound triplets 👏
Thanks!

Hi, thanks. The manolin's a Vanden.
Magnificent. 🎶 🎵 ⏹️

@johnonmandolin I'm obsessed with this tune. I'm dad used to play it on the Tintwistle and Fife ( flute). So I feel a little close to him when I hear it. Unfortunately I didn't inherit his talent. Thank you.
Fantastic! This is one I want to learn.
It's a fine tune.
