    The version of D&D that caused me to drop playing it. Could not take the crappy glued books or the deliberate withholding of information so that they could stuff it in another form and charge you again for what should have already been in the ph or dmg. Treat me like nothing more than a bottomless wallet and I will take my business elsewhere.

  • @ObatongoSensei
    @ObatongoSensei 24 дня назад

    I loved this supplement and the psionicist class. Several of my players wanted to play one, either as single or multiclass, and it was a lot of fun, especially when 20s rolled on power checks. I think most of the people who didn't like this book didn't fully understand it. Many compared powers to spell, considering the psionicist just a different spellcaster, and so they had the illusion that the class was broken and overpowered. The reality was that the psionicist was more like a different kind of rogue, more akin to a thief with powers instead of thief skills. And those powers worked just like nonweapon proficiencies, the optional rule you didn't want to use in your example. In facts, the class was at its best with powers that could be used in many ways, based on the creativity of the player, much like the best proficiencies did. Powers that could manipulate things or molecules were particularly versatile in that sense. You should look at the Player's Option: Skills and Powers book too, from the revision of 2nd Edition. The second part of that book reprinted the psionic rules with a lot of corrections and improvements.

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches 24 дня назад

      Hey thank you so much for your response. I feel the same way. I didn’t use non weapon profs in the video cuz it wasn’t relevant to the combat example and I go back and forth with using them in real play. I see that they’re great for flavour and customising the characters but I also feel like it limits problem solving in 2e. Without it, anyone can come up with creative solution, with it the players can get into “I’m not trained in x hence I’m not going to do that”. I plan to cover Skills & Powers version as part 3 of the series as the idea is looking at how psionics expand and evolves with further material.

    • @ObatongoSensei
      @ObatongoSensei 24 дня назад

      @@Dndditches The real problem with nonweapon proficiencies is that many of them go too much into the specific, resulting a lot restrictive. Add to that that you get only very few slots with which to buy them, and you end up stuck with limited options. One example are athletic proficiencies, such as jump or balance. Those should not be proficiencies, but basic rules open to everyone. Tumble or Acrobatics, on the other hand, are something that goes beyond normal athletics, allowing all sorts of unusual physical feats you can think of, so that should be a proficiency. Actually, the lists of nonweapon proficiencies could use some serious trimming and all classes should get a lot more slots to acquire or improve them. Same with weapon proficiencies, which should really be acquired and improved by groups instead of singularly.

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches 23 дня назад

      @ I agree with you on this one. Seem like every setting and splat book adds more proficiencies and some of them are really important eg, find water in dark sun, but there are not enough slots for everyone. I’ve not figured out a system on how to run them, and not using them seem to appeal to me more, or letting them pick a couple that are more background professional based ones. But it could very easily bloat like the 3.5e materials. As for weapon proficiencies, groups are ok. Actually the way the original Baldurs Gate 1 did it was pretty good.

    • @ObatongoSensei
      @ObatongoSensei 23 дня назад

      @@Dndditches The best system is to fuse together all the proficiencies that are strictly related into a single one, in a similar way as how they did in later editions. For example, why do we have too specific proficiencies like "find water" or "orienteering", which can be used in a single way to do a single thing, when you could have a more generic "survivalist" one which can be adapted to a vast array of situations and can be used to do a lot of different things, based on the player's and DM's imagination? Again, things that should be common abilities should not be among proficiencies, things like basic athletics (Str), stealth (Dex), endurance (Con), common lore (Int), perception (Wis), or diplomacy (Cha). Those should be among the general rules for adventuring. Baldur's Gate's system is actually the one from the Complete Fighter's Handbook and Combat and Tactics, homeruled just how I did back then: you use group weapon proficiencies for related weapons instead of single ones, but you also get specialization, mastery, high mastery, and grand mastery by group, instead than by specific weapon. And let's not forget about talents, introduced in Combat and Tactics, which could be acquired with either type of proficiency and were passive in nature, changing what or how the character could do in certain situations. No rolls required for those. Blind-Fighting is an example, which reduced both the penalties and hindrances of fighting in low-light conditions.

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches 23 дня назад

      @ aaaaaand that’s when I circle back to not use proficiencies. That’s just the standard 2e ability checks except the players now will only use the ones they’re trained in. I think I can still have a similar experience by not using nwp. I’ve not read all the 2.5 books in full but combat & tactics just felt like proto 3e cuz it was. I don’t play 3e due to the crunch involved and I don’t feel like a lot of the 3e-isms from the book add to the game. Using miniatures, that horrible initiative system, attacks of opportunity etc. I like the weapons specialisation rules though. Maybe to someone that played a lot of 2e its something new and fresh. I’ve not played a lot of 2e as I was just a kid at the time

    It's so easy for stuff to be missing in those boxed sets. And they really pushed up the cost of preparing products for sale during the 2nd Edition Era. I think WotC were right to get rid of them and switch back to the hardback format of 1st Edition. But it is a shame that the D&D Classics reprints inside the DMs Guild storefront does not offer separate poster maps. The maps are the one thing that can not be crunched down into book format. I don't care too much for the audio CDs that TSR and WotC put into a few products, but it would also be good for DMs Guild to have a connection to a Print on Demand CD manufacturer, for people who want to buy that sort of thing.

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches 29 дней назад

      Yeah absolutely. Matter of fact, the unboxing video in the following month had 4 monster sheets missing. But there’s something quite magical in opening a box and finding dozens of cool little nicknacks and that’s what they’re really selling. The fantasy. I think prudent business decisions gets in the way of creating truly magical experiences like these old boxsets. Beadle & Grimm’s deluxe sets are like $300-$400 that’s an insane price. To think that you could pick it up for $30 30 years ago is mind blowing to me. Wish I wasn’t such a poor kid back in the day.

      @ you know you’re totally right although the themes could be a bit heavy for kids, but an episodic TV show could work. Back in the 90s there was a show called Sliders and the premise was exactly that, each week a new portal opens to another reality. But I see that only working for a couple of seasons before the show gets stale, and that’s when the Faction War storyline should start, kinda like the X-files where everything always culminates in government conspiracies.

    Why would you tell players what they need to roll on a dice to hit enemy? "Hey, this guy's AC is 7, so you need to subtract seven from your THAC0." vs "He's in a tightly made semi plate armour. It will require some skill to land a blow that will reach any soft spot." And that's it. Player rolls and you do the math in your skull. No tables needed. No numbers mentioned during the play. It's basic math on integers. With THAC0 you always subtract what's positive and add what's negative. Simple as taking a dmp. For that reason I always found attack tables ludicrous. The main problem was always poor explanation, or writing style. Gygax style was never plain and simple, very chaotic and that's the main problem of the books. That's why THAC0 was always spit on. When I first started reading AD&D 2nd (my first interaction with D&D) I was a little bit lost. But a look at those THAC0 advancement tables explained everything. While Gygax had immagination, he was unable to say explicitly what I already mentioned: "With THAC0 you always subtract what's positive and add what's negative." One sentence. Well, THAC0 works like saving throws, that are contradiction to Attribute tests. That also should be noted as simple as possible. But instead of that everything is all over the place. Still AD&D 2nd was fun to run for generic stuff. Yet I had to ask players to created 3rd level characters to start a campaign and also cap HP, as this entire system is broken by design. A warrior can have 1HP at start while mage 4HP. "You tripped over spilled wine and you hit the floor." GM rolls 1d3-1. "You take 1 point of damage." Player: "I'm dead!" xD Trying AD&D when you started your rpg adventure with WFRP was something. From a well oiled machine, to cogs that are moving hard because of the sand trapped between them. Yet D&D is a heroic, high and candy fantasym while Warhammer is very European, grom and dark. And when I talk about WFRP I always mean original from 1986. All later editions change basic principles behind it, with 4th being very soft and pretty weird looking with its graphics. A rpg version of Warhammer was meant to be a little bit different from battle game. More realistic. 1986 book's art conveys that perfectly.

    • @Dndditches
      @Dndditches Месяц назад

      Everyone had a different way of doing THAC0, so you could have every player at the table doing it differently and it’s largely ok. I’m not a big fan of some of Gygax’s rhetoric particularly that everything is up to the job of the DM. The 1e PHB was vague on a lot of the aspects of combat, it had “your DM has the rules for x” far too many times. I don’t have a problem with the players knowing the rules, if anything it’s great to delegate certain tasks to players as the Dm already has to do so much. Forever DMs also make great players provided they can let go of control, in my experience.
