Samples do work from direct migraine :)
ESAs and therapy dogs are not the same. ESAs are basically pets for a person with a mental disability. Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and support to people other than their handler.

Do the saliva samples needs to be tawed or be used right out of feezer?
Use right out of the freezer for up to 5 min up to three training sessions :)

Why would I want my dog to be able to recognize an oncoming migraine?
Because they can often notice it before you do, giving you time to prepare for it, as well as potentially identifying triggers.
That’s exactly right, Tahoza! Thanks for your response. Amorton94, that’s a great question. The benefits are numerous and vary depending on the kind of migraine one has. In my case, since I have let-down migraine with aura and sometimes aphasia, my dog allows me to plan ahead and not drive, stay away from certain foods, consciously keep my stress levels low, take my medicine in advance, and all of that sometimes prevents me from having a migraine attack altogether.

My dog is already trained to detect a panic attack. But my headaches just started coming back. I’ve had a migraine for about 3 weeks now. And just found a med that helps. I want to have her alert before they happen. So I can get meds on board. Your videos have been very useful. And I will start applying them to my girls training. Finger crossed she is able to alert to the migraines as well as PTSD panic attacks.

When it comes time to do a training session, do you open the ziploc bag for the dog to sniff it or do you keep it closed since they can likely smell it through the bag?

I don't have room or money for another freezer, would clearing half of my freezer for samples still be good enough to train?
Yes, no problem! Just make sure that the half you free up has nothing else than your samples (no food, etc.).

@PawsitivePawsome how long would a sample last in a small fridge?
@021 The samples wouldn't last long or be reliable if stored in the fridge. They need to be frozen and stored in a freezer (you could use the freezer section of your small fridge as long as it doesn't have food in it). Once frozen and if left untouched, they can last for up to a year. If used/touched, they can last for up to 3 training sessions of 5 minutes each - as long as they are frozen again after each use and if no food residue/other smells are left on them.

Do you have any videos on how to train a dog for seizures? I can’t find any video 😢
Unfortunately not for seizures specifically, but the overall training steps and process should be fairly similar to migraine scent training, as long as you adjust to your specific seizure needs! For instance, instead of being able to collect the scent sample yourself, you might need the help of someone else to collect it for you at the beginning of an episode. Hope this helps!
