Radical Face "Welcome Home, Son" - Newport Folk Festival 2016

Ben Cooper and his band Radical Face were my favorite set at Newport this year. His music is composed of haunting melodies and dark lyrics, and the stories were explained during the show with hilarious yet self-deprecating humor. His talented band switched instruments, and during one set where Cooper played alone, they all laid down on the stage under their instruments and napped. Don't miss th...

The folk rock supergroup Middle Brother, consisting of Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John J. McCauley III from Deer Tick, and Matt Vasquez from Delta Spirit, played on the harbor stage this year at NFF. They brought on The Suffers' frontwoman Kam Franklin and Shovels & Rope (Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst) for this amazing version of "Someday."
James Taylor and George Wein - Newport Folk Festival 7/25/2015

After his surprise set on Saturday at the Newport Folk Festival, James Taylor welcomed 89-year-old George Wein to the microphone at the Fort stage. Wein founded the Newport Folk Festival in 1959. Ever-sharp, Wein recounted his chance encounter with Taylor on the Queen Mary II and Taylor's observation of the integrity that Newport embodies each year. We all agree, Mr. Taylor.
Decemberists + Guests "This Land is Your Land" - Newport Folk Festival 7/25/2015

The Decemberists closed the evening with a folk festival crowd favorite in tribute to Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." They were joined on stage with an unbelievable group, including Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Brandi Carlile, Lucius, Hozier, and many others.
Decemberists "Mariner's Revenge" - Newport Folk Festival 7/25/2015

The Decemberists were the headliners to close Saturday's festivities at the Newport Folk Festival. I saw them here a couple years before, and was eager to see their set again. They did not disappoint, and played their location-appropriate and ever-theatrical "Mariner's Revenge" song, complete with giant whale prop, and the audience being coached to "scream like you're being swallowed by a whale...
James Taylor "You've Got a Friend" - Newport Folk Festival 7/25/2015

James Taylor made a surprise appearance to cheering crowds at the Newport Folk Festival during one of the "unannounced" slots on Saturday. Just before this song, he told the story of his last time at the Newport Folk Festival - July 20, 1969. His set was interrupted while playing "Fire and Rain" when George Wein came on stage to announce that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had landed on the moo...
"Maggie's Farm" - Bob Dylan cover by Dawes, with Dylan's guitar - Newport Folk Festival 7/26/2015

The 2015 Newport Folk Festival closed with "' '65 Revisited" - to commemorate Bob Dylan's divisive electric set played at Newport 50 years ago. The legendary Al Kooper, who played at Dylan's '65 set, returned to play organ. Dawes, David Rawlings, and Gillian Welch support. The famous Fender Stratocaster Dylan used to play his electrified version of Maggie's Farm returned for the anniversary, pl...

Jeff Tweedy played a fantastic set during the 2014 Newport Folk Festival, including surprise guests Mavis Staples and Jess Wolfe/Holly Laessig from Lucius. Here they all sing John Fogerty's "Wrote a Song for Everyone" in classic folk festival style. With sequins and a cane.
Josh Ritter + Gregory Alan Isakov "Wait for Love" - live Lincoln Theatre, Washington D.C. 3.1.2014

Josh Ritter closed his acoustic tour with an encore of "Wait for Love" joined by the incredible Gregory Alan Isakov. They unplugged at the end and walked to the front of the stage to close the show, with the audience joining in. Zach Hickman and Josh Kaufman support the magic on guitar. Just before leaving the stage, Josh bid the audience farewell with these words: "Drive home safe. I hope you ...

Josh Ritter performed a new song (he did not give a title) during the acoustic show at the beautiful Lincoln Theatre in Washington D.C. Or, as the equally charming and talented opening singer/songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov put it, "Josh's haunted theatre tour." Zach Hickman supports (on the "world's tiniest piano" according to Josh Ritter), with the unbelievable Josh Kaufman on guitar.
Punch Brothers "The Auld Triangle" - New Year's Eve 2013 Bowery Ballroom NYC

The Punch Brothers performed the last show of their 3-night extravaganza on New Year's Eve 2013 to a sold-out and highly enthusiastic crowd. Just after midnight (and their high-tech countdown with a white board), they sang this hauntingly beautiful rendition of the classic song The Auld Triangle. Their arrangement is from the movie Inside Llewyn Davis.
Bastille - "Pompeii" live at Union Transfer, Philadelphia 9.29.2013

The British band BΔSTILLE performed the penultimate show for their first U.S. tour at Union Transfer in Philly, and closed the set with their hit song "Pompeii" to hundreds of screaming, singing, and jumping fans. Since I work as an archaeological conservator, it might seem difficult to hear about walls tumbling down in an ancient city... but I'll make an exception for Dan Smith.
Bastille - "Laura Palmer" live at Union Transfer, Philadelphia 9.29.2013

The London-based band BΔSTILLE just completed their first U.S. tour, so naturally I thought nothing of driving 384 miles to see them last weekend. (Baltimore to Brooklyn [detour to see the Typhoon show and pick up a fellow Bastille enthusiast] to Philly to Baltimore.) Here is their Twin Peaks-inspired "Laura Palmer" - one of the many songs where the audience's frenetic singing nearly eclipsed t...

whoa that's clairo, cool
That’s clairo in the overalls!!
I searched up "Josh Ritter and Gregory Alan Isakov" as a shot in the dark, expecting to find absolutely nothing, but lo and behold, this video right here proved me wrong. Two of my top 5 musicians of all time in one video. I had never expected for these two to be in one video together.
She is no folk singer.
that was weak
😍😍😍😍
Oh Colin, grabbing his wine at the end there. ¦D
This is nice. Love Middle Brother
Also, Shovels and Rope (singing with Kam). Thanks for the video!
Thanks very much! I'll add it to the caption above.
such a cool band LOL
Yes!
That's also Duane Betts on guitar to the far left side of the stage!
Thanks - he was fantastic!
+Crystal Longdon he recently joined Dawes. hope he sticks around and is a part of the next album process
Darrien Day Yes, saw him live with Dawes earlier this year!
Crystal Longdon I bet that was a great show. Dawes having another guitar (especially with Duane being the type of player he is) in the band really helps fill out the sound in a nice way, in my opinion.
Yes, he really adds to their show!
OMG! Two wonderful artists together... Thank you so much for sharing it! I wonder if they will ever come to Hungary too.... (it would be awesome)
I didn't realize David Spade was such a good banjo player
I love this!

*Right* *On* . in americas and worldwide. - .. if Heaven was all that was promised to me why don't I pray for death.. - Just wonderin' here Too. - *dont* *you*

I agree, the only thing i do on you tube is watch these guys playing....
sweet tune. looking forward to whole album release in march.
Joy to you baby, baby, baby (wink)
I heard them on NPR a few years ago, and this was my first chance to see them live. They were fantastic, and their harmonies were even more amazing than on their CDs (if that is even possible). The violinist was indeed incredible. Thanks so much!
i wish i could like this five times. haha. thats what has happened to me too......
awesome sound
This is real music...plain & simple.
Bless Pete Seeger, a true encyclopedia of folk music. Thank you Pete!
I need to see this live. This particular piece is so powerful and beautiful.
This is my life. This is my life. This is all about my life. Thank you dear dear dear dear Pete. I met you when i was just 13 on the Hudson River on the Clearwater...we passed like so many zucchinis over the sides of our boats rafted together!!! I love you. Thank you . genevieve
