my daughter took in a 4 month old kitten when she had an adult 3 year old cat. There was some hissing for a couple of days, but after that they got along fine. She never isolated them at all. Then a year later, she added a puppy. No problem. But, each cat is different. Her older cat was a pretty easy going guy.

I'm not so sure that my experience is in line with what I'm seeing, that they're so driven by scent. The driving force is jealousy, of anxiety, and all the familiar smells in the world didn't make a difference, least of all that feliway thing that's supposed to flood the whole house (or 700 square feet of it) with facial pheromones. Fortunately the male cat is a real trooper and he's making it much easier than it could be, he goes up to her and touches noses with her even while she stands there and hisses at him, but he's not dissuaded, he tries again later even though he's obviously afraid, and I notice that now at least her irises don't widen to have her pupils take up her whole eyes, so she's not really scared any more (but he is, his eyes are all black), just resentful. Fortunately she has never responded with any violence, just hissing, but seems to be getting more tolerant now. She's thinking he's her replacement, even though I actually got him to be her friend. Sad irony there. Fortunately he's very patient and respectful, while she has never quite escalated it to violence. I only got them mixing after a week and a half after he managed to get the door open separating them over the doorstop that was keeping it open just a little, so she went from hissing at him through the door to hissing at him directly, but that's all, just hissing. Still after trying for a long time, I really don't think scent has much to do with it. The real evidence for that conclusion is that she has been sleeping on the blanket he slept on, even though she's no fan of him. But then I think both these cats actually have pretty lousy senses of smell, from what I've seen actually so maybe it's not following the usual rules.

Thanks for this video to show this can be slow but to be patient and take small steps on cat time. My cat is 11 and lived with another cat for most of her life. They got along well after just 2 days. The older cat passed about 2 years ago. I adopted an 8 year old last week that lived in a shelter for over a year and the prior owner gave her up due to homelessness. There are so many older cats who need a home. This time it will be a slow process, not sure why but both cats are very social. Your video gives me confidence we'll get there.

Thanks for sharing! 3 weeks ago I brought home a 3 month old kitten and my resident cat is 2 years old. They don't hiss or growl but I do have a problem with my big guy stalking and ambushing the kitten. I know the whole dominance thing happens between the cats but he can get pretty rough so I am always on edge and I keep them separate majority of the time. Does any experienced cat parent have any suggestions or understanding why he is persistently doing this to her?

I hate how all of the videos on yt make it seem like it's so easy.. While I'm here, 2 months into the process and we're still keeping the cats in separate rooms. On top of that, we have to make sure to keep both of them separated by more than one door, because otherwise there's a lot of hissing and meowing and growling going on... Will this ever end :((( p.s. Oh yeah, happy it worked out for you though. Congrats

    • @AuroraClair

@@MrKingawesome Not much better.. We had them in separate rooms with no chamce of interaction (hallway between the two rooms), because one of them would keep attacking the door (literally hugging and bitting the door) when he smelled the other cat near the door. I'm afraid we'll have to find a new home for the newcomer.. Maybe we'll try with the mesh door once more before finally making the difficult decision. I'll make an update in case we manage to somehow make it work between them. Thanks for asking though :)

@@MrKingawesome you think so? Mine are both around 8 years old, both neutered males, and both been living as single indoor cats until now. On top of that, the newcomer had been peeing and spraying in his room until we've stopped trying to introduce them.. How old/gender/etc. Are your two cats? How long have you been introducing them? May I ask how you do the introductions and what their reactions are? Thank you for your positive comment :) though slight, it gave me some hope :)

@@AuroraClair Molly - 8 Year old female cat Jack - 3 Month old male kitten 2nd week of Introductions My 8 year old lived as a single cat until I recently brought this 3 month old kitten home. The kitten isn't hissing or anything, its just the older cat that is territorial, hissing & growling whenever she sees the kitten. After the first week the resident cat stopped hissing at the kittens scent but when she sees the kitten she wants to defend her territory and starts hissing & growling. Currently i'm on week 2, so when i feed the kitten I leave the door open with a gate blocking them off and brush the older cat (all she ever cares about is attention, she doesn't care about food, but if she did care about food I would simply have them eat at the same time opposite sides of the door). If you leave food out for them all day this won't really work, you need your cat to be hungry so they eat on your terms. Leave the food out for like a half hour to an hour, then take it away, if they are hungry later oh well, they'll stop missing feedings. Just keep associating good things with being around each other like food, attention, toys, catnip, whatever works for your cats. I notice little improvements each day. I'm also getting the resident's nails trimmed tomorrow so i can start doing face to faces without the threat of sharp nails. There will almost certainly be some type of physical contact when I do introduce them, both cats cant be the alpha, and they need to establish their pecking order. You can try some cat pheromone diffusers, I have one plugged in the wall not sure its doing anything, but cant hurt. Also adding a few cat trees throughout the house will make the territory much bigger which will almost certainly help. You might have been going through the introductions a little too quick - try doing the opposite food at the door thing for a few weeks while gradually bringing the food (and some treats) closer and closer to each other until they stop hissing at the door, then you can start moving on to the same process, but adding the visual element. You should start seeing your cats become more and more relaxed with each passing week as they realize they are not a threat to one another, and become used to the routine of the other one being around. They should also start to associate treats, attention, whatever gets them going with the other cat. You and your cats will be part of your family for many more years, so if they cant become friends, which may be a real possibility based on them both being only cats for 8 years and are of the same sex, they should at least be able to coexist. That's why adding to vertical space with cat trees and also some hiding places will allow them to avoid each other. Good luck!

We’re going through this at the moment! Adopted a two year old female and our other cat is a 14 year old male. He’s okay with her, but she hisses at him and still won’t let us get close to her. Now she has started peeing in my bed! And last night I discovered she had peed on my pillow which is a very expensive Simba pillow I’ve only had a few months! I really don’t know if I can cope with her much longer. 😢 I need a cat whisperer or something! Anyway, I’m glad it is all worked out well for you guys now. 😊 I can’t find her at the moment as I got mad with her as I had to strip the bed for the second time in 48 hours and she bolted downstairs. I followed with the sheets and pillow but by the time I got down she’d vanished! I have searched over and over up and down, but don’t know her hiding places downstairs yet as she has only been allowed to explore downstairs for about a week. I am worried she found the cat flap and has bolted! Mind you, we thought that twice before but she was hiding upstairs in my wardrobe! I think she is claiming my room as hers now hence the spraying/ peeing thing, but that’s where I draw the line! Before she has done it on the bed in her isolation room which I covered with plastic, but she stopped that a couple of weeks ago. I am really worried about her now. I hope she hasn’t got out and gone this time, just have to wait and see if she comes out of hiding eventually or comes back. If she did get out, I doubt she will be back somehow!

Isabel, my cat I’ve had for 3 years, is not an affectionate, friendly cat. To anyone. But she is going about her normal kitty routine...with regular stops at the bathroom door to hiss and growl. I’m worried about her ever accepting him, because of her generally hostile temperament.
