Why drip your faucet? Does it work?
Просмотров 6356 месяцев назад
Let's look at why you should drip your faucet. In this experiment, I answer a simple question: Should you drip your faucet in freezing conditions? Should it be tiny drip or roaring gush of water? Let's find out together! I walk you thru a simple experiment where I show the effects of freezing water and how a simple, tiny hole (dripping a faucet) can alleviate the extreme pressure buildup saving...

Don’t Let Freezing Weather Crack Your Pool Pipes
Просмотров 1057 месяцев назад
Let's look at how to freeze protect a North Texas Swimming Pool. We clean the leaf baskets and skimmer baskets to ensure the pool automation can adequately circulate the pool water during freezing subzero texas weather. This will prevent pool pipes from cracking and bursting. I show how to setup Freeze Protect in a Jandy Aqualink pool automation software. Most importantly, keep those pool pumps...

But you never actually changed the light bulb under water did you? You brought the light unit above water then changed it. Cool video for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. You just used the wrong wording for your video that's all. 👍
Thank you for your comments - I was trying to be a bit cheeky with the title! But I’m glad you enjoyed it! lol
Where’s the link for the bulb? Thanks for the video!
I've updated the description to have the link now. Here it is as well: amzn.to/4cqRQtC
'PromoSM'
it scares me
Yeah I wish it would beep during daytime hours!
replace the battery
Yep
I checked on google correct me if im wrong but. The reason why it chirps in the night is because the room temperature drops and impact the battery's ability to power the alarm The reason i think is because as a drop in room temperature could cause it to chirp at night
This is a fantastic explanation! I’ll have to test this!
I’m not the smartest but try putting the battery in the day or night it might cause it to chirp in the day
Worth a try!
Hmm good question
I don’t know why, but it’s always in the middle of the night!
Make sure that any ball valves in your system are open!!! If the slug of water inside the ball freezes it WILL bust your valve body. 😉
Thanks for the tip!
You are right (and Steveprice5664 is mistaken) that it does NOT require a great deal of flow to prevent pipes bursting, in fact, there doesn't actually have to be any drips coming from your faucets so long as you've backed off enough pressure on the faucet gaskets to allow a tiny amount of water to bypass the gasket if the pressure due to expanding ice ANYWHERE in your pipes to relieve the tremendous pressure that is exerted by the ice. BUT the best way to be sure you've decompressed the gaskets sufficiently is to see drips. One drip per minute would be enough!!! 😳😃 The pipes don;t rupture where the ice is, they always burst downstream of the ice plug. Water is virtually incompressible (it takes ~33,000 lbs to reduce water's volume by 1%) This means that if there is a slug of liquid water constrained between an ice plug and a tightly closed valve, the pressure on the water can rise to THOUSANDS of psi. The weakest spot in the pipes containing that slug of water will rupture under that massive pressure. The reason the rupture is always downstream of the ice plug is that water upstream (on the supply side) side is because water under pressure on that side is pushed back to the water main, or if you have a backflow device, out the pressure relief valve on the RPZ device. I should point out that dripping faucets don't prevent your pipes from freezing. I've serviced many houses that have lost water supply due to frozen pipes, but if they loosened the pressure on their valves, there was no damage to repair. We would warm the crawl space enough and the pipes in the area that froze enough to allow 33˚ water to slowly melt the ice as warmer water started moving thru the ice plug.
I love this response! I too have researched this and theory says exactly what you have experienced in the field. I was hoping I could replicate this with a simple experiment. Turns out it’s more complicated as I need the structural integrity to withstand these immense pressures. So your comments meant the world to me! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video and post your comments! Please stay tuned for version 2.0 of this video! I promise I will break some copper pipes the right way! lol!
@@p-laddy The tricky thing is getting the ice in the right spot and controlling for even small amounts of air in the system. You can't solder pipes with water in them, it takes a valve that will allow you to fill them after the ends are soldered on. don't use a ball valve because the water in a closed ball valve WILL freeze and bust the valve body every time. Globe valves don't internally trap water, whereas gate valves sometimes can.
this is just wrong on so many levels
The shark bite connectors were not a good choice for this experiment. My next video will have better copper and pvc caps. But the focus of my video is that you don’t need water flow. You just need pressure relief. There are other videos that show this phenomenon as well.
@@p-laddy I commented above about how ice bursts pipes, a good experiment to perform to demonstrate this would be to: 1- solder caps on the copper pipes for a secure closure. 2- try a couple of pipes with various amounts of air pockets in pipes stored upright, then cap them with pressure gauges. For example, take 3 pipes about 12" long, one COMPLETELY filled (no air bubbles), one with about 1/2" air bubble, one with 6" (half full) of air. What you should see is the pressure on the full pipe will rise to the bursting point. The one with the small air bubble will increase, but maybe not enough to burst the pipe, but the small air space should rise to maybe hundreds of pounds. The one with the large air space will rise, but maybe only a few pounds? The greater volume of air, which IS compressible, can absorb most of the pressure exerted by the ice. For this experiment to work, the pressure gauges will have to be on the tops of the pipes (where the air is) and the freezing will need to be in the lower portion of the pipes. If the top of the full pipe freezes at top first, the rupture will be below the pressure gauge and it won't record the pressure rise. Good luck. I look forward to your next experiments.
This is a great idea! Thank you again for such thoughtful comments!
Letting a faucet drip creates a dynamic condition. You're not simulating continuous water movement, only slight movement when freezing actually takes place. The idea of having the water flow is to freezing. A 'slow drip' won't do it. The water needs to actually 'trickle'. Try using a couple of hoses with different flow rates. I did.
Thank you for this suggestion. Sounds like a great experiment!
Awesome shots! Nice to be able to clearly see so many stars.
It’s amazing what we can see once we get out of the city!

Thank you
A Fire Sprinkler System at the riser has just as much pressure as a fire hydrant. Staff should always be prepared to shut off water supply quickly. Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail.....
This a great tip! Thank you :)
Texas will never be ready for winter.
Can confirm
As long as we build the way we build in TX, we will always get slapped by winter!
Was on a shared well. Temps dropped below 0F even pipes in the ground froze. Did not come up above freezing for 3 weeks. 2 am. Hissing noise. Run in the kitchen. Water spraying from under the sink. But i had the main shut off. The landlord turned the pump on as it went to his place too. I have my hand around the pipe. Can't reach the phone. I release. Check valves. Still off. Get into crawl space. Follow copper pipe from floor under sink to dirt in crawl space. Start digging with bare hands. Another shut off buried in the dirt in the crawl space. A month later. Late shift at work. Can't make the last ferry. Stay with my elderly cousin. 3 am. Hissing noise wakes me up i go rushing to the bathroom. Nope its my elderly female cousin taking a number one in the dark to not disturb my sleep.
This is hilarious! Sounds like some PTSD from frozen pipes - LOL!
"hang in there you're gonna be ok" texans when 0.005 in of snow falls 💀💀
Honestly we all freak out! We also don’t know how to drive in the 0.005 in of snow either!
Oh no.... winter... Cold.
Thank you for watching - the cold will be gone tomorrow!
Whooaa.... water freezes ??? 🤯 i thought my grade 3 science teacher was a liar
lol - thanks for watching! These comments are hilarious! By the way, stay tuned I’m doing a video where I freeze several pipe sections outside to see which ones break…some sections I simulate a water faucet dripping. Will be interesting!
Salutations from the cold country to the north. Frostproof hose bibs are the norm up here.

It's going to freeze pretty soon where I'm at. I like motorsickles.

Fuck lol I forgot
Don’t worry just let it gently thaw and hopefully no damage :)
Shit I forgot too. I was too busy bringing my container garden indoors. Lol
Run from Texas.📡🇺🇸👽
Texans can’t run away - it’s too cold so we run back into our homes!
Hey northerner the piping is not the same houses in Texas are built the way they are the north for the cold therefore you gotta do that type of shit smart guy
Northerners also do that, we just don’t need a RUclips short for it. We also know how to plow roads, and keep the power grid going. Also the cowboys lost another playoff game, whataburger is overrated, and your bbq is overpriced. 😂😂.
Yeah we aren’t built for winter!
You guys make us northerners laugh. Good vid.
Thank you! Wait until you see us drive on snow flurries! Lol

If you think that's insane you should try a pixel But the iPhone is better at pretty much every other aspect of being a smartphone
Pixel phones have been pretty crazy at phone photography. They really started the whole computational phone photography category in my opinion. Thank you for your comments!
@@p-laddy yup, with literally nothing but a tripod and my Pixel 7 Pro I've taken pictures of Bose's Galaxy
This isn't even half as impressive as the Samsung S23 Ultra. i was able to take full close up CLEAR pictures of the moon with every tiny detail and crater visible as if it was taken with a professional camera. That was just in my hands but if you have smth to stabilise the phone at you can get even better ones.
Thank you for your comments! I think it’s pretty impressive what we all can do with phones in our pockets!
For sure it is a good zoom
iPhones the best
I wish I could have the 15x zoom in an iPhone 15 and not have to buy the big max
@@p-laddy that much money you should have waited until they got one in must have got a plan or you just payed the1500
I have a samsung and i could see the craters in the moon through a window whith the lights on
I agree there are other phones out there that can do a better job. Thank you for your comments!
Yep thats sp fake a 💯 because put it at a white light and u see what im talking about
It’s not fake. Look up others who shot the moon with iPhone 15 pro. The sensor is pretty amazing
Well done. Love it!

Don't sweat it, just call us anyway👌
LOL - absolutely Jim!! I would always suggest calling a professional for those that do not have the means to perform this maintenance. But my main goal is to share with everyone why this is happening so they can take action.
@@p-laddy I'm all for everyone doing as much of the home maintenance as safely possible. I'm just being facetious 😁
In my case, the air handler was installed too close to the attic floor. The drain line barely has any slope. It has a p-trap that gets clogged. On the first visit from the tech, they did not realize the clog was forming; we’d called them because the unit shut off. And so while the new float switch was getting shipped they bypassed the broken one. The line clogged and the pan overflowed. Ours is already needing renovation, so there wasn’t ruined drywall. But some water did make it all the way to the basement. Mine doesn’t have a 2nd drain pipe. If the line clogs water comes out of the bottom of the air handler chassis. I also need to raise the unit to fix the slope issue.
Oh boy - that's rough! Yeah - not having that critical slope on those drain lines can cause these issues. So best to keep on top of it. Good luck!
Can this be done for rechaulking a bathroom sink? It's a bit trickier because the sink is round, so taping might get tricky
Oval or rounded sinks can be tricky to use this tape technique…Especially if your sink is white and countertop is a contrasting color like a dark grey or other color. For curved surfaces you need a steady hand and dispense an even amount of caulk. Then use the same smoothing technique. However, for around a sink, I would use a latex based caulk so you can use water for cleanup. It will also be easier to smooth out the caulk with soapy water instead of WD-40. Best thing - if you mess up just wipe it away with a wet rag and try again!
