We're going to go through the basics you need to know about for standing up a level of an enterprise datacenter. We'll cover networking, storage, physical hardware, virtual machines, enterprise operation systems and all the applications you may come in contact with.
The plan is to go start from finish and cover the basics then deep dive into improvements throughout the life of the channel.
Also I'll be sharing some great resources to get even better at being a systems administrator because I'm just showing one way of many on how to do all of these things.

How to get a job as a system administrator, What job role?
Part one of this mini series is what job role do you want. System Administrator or sysadmin is a very general job role term that is out there but the duties get thrown under a large number of other job roles and titles.
This is just a simple video to explain you shouldn't just look for jobs called 'system administrator' but be on the look out for job titles that maybe focus in on the skills you want to have, or have and what to improve!
Let me know down in the comments what your job title is if you are a system administrator or feel like you should be considered a system administrator.
Thank you for all the support!

Lol I didn't even know indeed had a dark mode page plus.
3 years of mysql_secure_installation. Looking forward to future parts!
do you believe that this role still exist in nowadays ?
I think it does but being specifically titled 'system administrator' is getting smaller to me. It's moving more into specialized roles I feel as opposed to generalists but I think there will probably always be places that are looking for a system administrator.
Thank you for the share and your answer 🤝

Thank you!! Sorted 7 keys on mine :)
awesome video, I've been learning subnetting while studying the network +
Looking at exactly this from vxrail and vSAN to proxmox and ceph. Veeam is on cpu license thou, so does that not follow with proxmox? Be really interested in your move (have 2 clusters with. 60 vms total ~50tb)
Yeah we already had a call to start the migration process for our veeam licensing to move to VUL so we can just backup any type
I'm getting mixed results with it in testing. It succeeds with on windows VM, and fails with another. It's a repeatable error each time. The main difference between the two images is the HDD controller in the VM, but that really (at least one would think) would not have any affect on the backup. Though seems that you had an error on restore, so maybe that's that. Hopefully they work through these issues. For now I would be nervous putting too much trust in it until they iron things out, which I am sure they will.
Let me know what type of configuration and I'll try as well to see if I get similar results.
@@sysadminsean the main difference is the one that fails, is using an IDE type HD (attached to the VirtIO SCSI controller) and the one that succeeds uses a SCSI HD attached to the same controller. I'll make a second similar image of the failing system to see if that is indeed the issue, or it's coincidence.
@@bradgrandorff1058 I'll see if I can create something similar. We're still testing new proxmox backups and doing file level restores, and full restores but we won't have too many different types of controllers when we're done.
@@sysadminsean doesn't appear to be that, or at least, jst the controller. I backed up a running installation of windows (too lazy to do complete install) and with it in a running state it did back up fine with that controller combination. For the record, I would never use the IDE in reality, it's just that when I first installed the image, windows has a brilliant error "Windows can't install on that drive 0x80300001" when using the VirtIO drivers. It simply means to mount that Windows install ISO. Long story short, first time through that I just used the IDE driver, thus the reason I have it as an image.
Huge thnks for 8:30
More findings and links to info I forgot: You can backup via pools (since they don't have tags as a way, so if you need to do autombackups via data classification thats a way to do it.) We did a full node backup in a job that was just doing a vm, and it auto adjusted and realized the vm that we'd already backedup was the same so it just did an incremental. www.veeam.com/company/press-release/new-veeam-data-platform-v12-2-extends-1-data-resilience-to-more-platforms-and-applications.html
How does this compare to the Proxmox Backup server?
I honestly think it's doing basically the same thing. But veeam allows us to send our backups to immutable cloud storage, and lets us utilize multiple different hypervisors if we so choose, and that's kind of big for us. If you are only needing to backup proxmox lxc's and vms then PBS is a perfectly fine way to go, that product is pretty nice.
In addition Veeam runs on WIndows "Veeam needs a Windows box but the database can be Postgresql so no need for MSSQL." Nothing wrong with that, just, mentioning the difference.
Veeam - good, excellent even. Good job.
I'm really impressed with the implementation so far.
we choose xcp-ng
Yes, please, more of your Veeam integration with Proxmox reports. I'd rather see native host backup/restore support in PBS, but anything is useful.
Excellent news. Veeam is great and so is Proxmox. This makes me happy.
Is possible to configure open HPC clustering in a normal pc (like i have three cpu with intel i7 10nth gen processor and each having 2TB of disk space and 32 gb of ram space in it)
Sure! Just remember one machine needs to be the provisioning host/head node and others are compute
Do you recommend buying the paid version of mobaxterm?
I do it's really not very expensive and a well developed tool I think. I've migrated a bit from it recently though as I move away from Windows more but it's still good. I'd suggest trying out this, mremoteng, and royalts, and see which one fits your needs most. For me it was MobaXTerm for years
Congratulations on the changes. Thanks for sharing some of the vendor names you will be getting help from.
how would you setup ceph over 3 nodes that have 3 diffrent public ip addresses?
If they can talk to each other it doesn't matter what their ip is but if they are geographically distant I wouldn't go with ceph the speeds would be too inconsistent.
@@sysadminsean they can talk to each other but the ceph monitors are not getting setup correctly
When you say three different public ips do you mean different public subsets? If so it just won't work properly with all the extra networking. Ceph really should only be used on an isolated 10gb or better network. I use it on 1gb but all on the same network switch and not for any production loads so I'm not too worried. I also would highly caution giving your hypervisor a public ip just for the sake of security.
@@sysadminsean well that public ip assigned for hypervisor is islated as they are nin diffrent regieons
@@mohammedfaisal6946 Thats not exactly what I mean. Your hypervisors should not have their management interfaces attached to public facing ips, they should have private networks that you would access via a VPN or other secure gateway access. If each proxmox host is in a different region CEPH is not going to function properly at all due to all the different networking and routing you will be dealing with. They need to all exist in their own network usually all attached to the same network switch or switches depending on how you do your config.
As a fellow sys admin, I was wondering the same thing. Are admins having to go to every workstation and boot in safe mode? Geez.
Considering how many placed were down all day. I'd say that's probably exactly what happened for many.
Someone on reddit seems to have a more automated fix www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1e708o0/fix_the_crowdstrike_boot_loopbsod_automatically/ Update from a friend whos company uses crowdstrike. Their plan is to have users contact the service desk and then walk the use through the steps listed above to repair their devices. (note: this friend does not work in it). I feel so sorry for all the users and call center folks that are working today.
confused .... so this was applied through windows defender's threat update procedure, with crowdstrike being a third party supplier to this process?
This was applied through crowdstrikes software if you are a customer. Their product is like a defender style tool to protect from exploits, threats, intrusion attempts etc.
Thanks for the video.
Good job guys Keep up
Hello, Does not work with Windows 7. is there a solution ?
What errors are you getting? Did you install the qemu tools? Are you running bitlocker, tpm, etc. ? I don't do much with desktop OSes these days but I can try to help
@@sysadminsean Hi, it work with BIOS(SeaBIOS). Many thanks
Super useful series! Thank you! We just received our machine 4x80 cores. Cant wait to try out this build... but first i need to source two special powercords to be eble to fire it up XD
Eth provision should be ens19 right ? Which one we should use ?
Yeah this was confusing on my machine it would be ens19 the 10.0.0.1 ip address. This is the flat network that talks between the headnode and the compute nodes.
Really appreciated your time and efforts put in ... Im facing the same error.. the compute nodes are picking the dhcp but not loading os ?
Check the following stuff 1.) firewall on and ports open (80 for http, how pxe offers up the image) 2.) verify that httpd, and tftpd service is running 3.) verify that dhcpd.conf has the info for ipxe to tell the nodes where to go for their images.
Well, I really appreciate the videos and the time it took to make them. Rarely do we get this kind of detail on a complex topic as this. I'm kind of shaking my head here wondering if I'll ever get something like this working. I would love to know places that are using this technology to run STAR-CCM+ or whatever. I hope your employer allows you to share more information. Thanks again for your work on this. It is inspiring.
this is pretty much just the surface of it all. It can get even wilder. So you can take software like spack, and let people deploy singularity for their jobs to basically run containers inside nodes so that its like nodes inside nodes to do even more complex jobs and job arrays, and even more stuff that we don't even begin to touch where I work because it's not really a focal point. Now I don't cover it in this series (cause I can't afford to have any) but you can do GPU based HPC or gpu pinned based HPC as well for doing al the AI, LLM, and even bigger computations.
@@sysadminsean Sounds like I need a bigger team. :)
I'm really interested to know if you on your journey to sysadmin career learned to code or was it not necessary same as i am as junior sysadmin
So for me coding wasn't required but I started a very long time ago. If I was starting over now I'd want to know powershell, ansible, terraform, bash, and any other scripting language better than I do now only because tons of what I do these days benefits so greatly from it. I should probably do some code livestreams to give me more reason to practice hah
You're a life saver ..Thank you , Thank you ,very very much ..Your work is awesome . God bless and increase your territory.
Not relevant, because in proxmox 8.2+ added option for import ESXi machines directly from GIU.
Thats why there's another video though some folks do have trouble with that esxi importer so they can at least attempt this method as well.
Everything Broadcom acquires goes to crap.
Again, thank you for this and the previous videos. They will be invaluable when I'm able to finish some projects and get started on this.
Many thanks for making OpenHPC warewulf + slurm setup... If we want to change the IP's for Public and internal IP l, what are the files and services we must update and help me with flow steps please
Sure thing I'll actually be going over a lot of this in the next video mainly because I really don't like openhpc's step of disabling the firewall so we'll discuss that and I'll show you everywhere you need to change ip's on the system and dig into the bones a bit more.
Thankyou @@sysadminsean👍
Thank you very helpful...
Cool
Thanks you so much for this detail and demo. I think this will really help me in a few weeks when I have a little more time to look into it. I definitely need to Read The Fine Manual, AKA docs. :)
I got a few more vids to release but the docs are good
I'm tired of giving up my nights and weekends and I feel like I am always oncall because no one else wants to do it.
Gotta have a on call rotation if you absolutely have to have on call and your boss needs to enforce how the team does it otherwise the good folks just quit.
@@sysadminsean Gotta admit, I am looking elsewhere. The IT market is dead in this area though unless you want entry-level call center/help desk roles or are very experienced and can be a sysadmin (but at below-market pay). Thinking about getting out of this all together. I loved help desk at my current company, made above average pay, but it feels like the people at the top just want me out despite all the positive feedback and stellar reviews I got from my supervisor in that department. I think being a network engineer just doesn't suit me. I tried to apply to data center operations and had the requisite skills but they hired outside instead (when there were only two applicants).
One of my favorite SystemD-isms is that you can systemctl enable --now blah.service to combine the enable and start (or disable and stop) commands. Interesting that the OHPC vevrsion of WW is at WW3!
This is soo cool! We are about to buy a 4-node HPC for chemistry calculations on NWChem and i will have to set up everything with 0 knowledge XD Cant wait for the 3rd episode. I am planning to run it on Infiniband at the end but first just simple ethernet. The nodes will be equipped with FDR cards and we also buy the FDR switch. We get the cables later.
By the way, could you make a final test in the final video with running an NWChem job on the nodes?
I could try, do you know of any test jobs I could run and expected result times? I promise my 'cluster' will be very subpar but I could absolutely show it 'working'
@@sysadminsean There must be many testjobs in the NWChem folders. Job time is not important but how i can get to the point where i can run jobs across nodes XD The machine comes next week. Initially i am thinking of making a simple LAN and the four machines will be individual units. Three will work with the best installation we can do currently and one will left for installation and HPC creation trials. It is really appreciated if you alter your plans by my request ;)
@@szbalogh I'll do what I can but can't make any promises.
Is it possible to create a crush map profile that use Erasure Coding in place of Replicate to optimize storage capacity ?
Honestly I can't sat that I've even looked into anything like that. I'd have to do some research as I'm still fairly new to the ins and out of ceph
Tons of soft skill training offered through Wayne Corp and it's not specific to IT.
Excellent! Can't wait to see the next one. Thanks.
