Here is a putting video to help those players who are impacted by their perception when it comes to putting aim and set up. Setting the eyes first can be big help in getting the aim correct to start with. I see a lot of players who require a specific head position to aim well but then start the aiming process/routine without that head position in place.

Odyssey month drill 2 - how putter head characteristics can help you sqaure up
Phil and Mike this is an incredibly valuable video Thank You!! I look forward myself to doing the same tests with my Vertex. Two questions please. For “US” coins would it be better to use a quarter rather than a penny? Second, do you think you will tend to get improved stroke Rhythm Ratios with better acceleration profiles?? Again THANKS!!!
evidence based explanation 👍 I would think that this drill makes you more tentative too. definitely not smoother because you'll be accelerating into the ball to pick up speed in the final moments (as evidenced in mike's demo)
That's my issue. If I have a bad couple of weeks of putting I'm looking to change my stance, my grip, my putter, my routine, etc. etc. I go through periods where I putt really well but I have no patience when things go sideways. I should probably just check to make sure my fundamentals are sound and just keep plugging away.
I will try this tomorrow. Thanks Phil
do you have lessons on line?
The one single change that has made the biggest difference to my putting this season (4 handicap)..
I totally understand. Your comment align with my putting experiences two years ago, when I was consistently was missing my putts on the low side. So, I started taking a different line. I made more putts
Fantastic 👍
Counterweighting putters helps distance control. Also got a blast motion sensor, and this helps with getting right speed.
I feel like seve and snedeker are similar it’s more arms and hands drawing a straight line , I do try this in practice with great results from 10 foot , but I struggle with pace on longer putts , Seve never looked like he was a shoulders putter ,
Similarly, I never understood comments like “the putt breaks towards Phoenix”, or something strange like that. All that, and then your putt rolls over an old pitch mark and it gets deflected😂.
I'm glad I'm doing it right. Where you are aiming-your line, determines the putter face on the ball. There's several parts to this: for example longer putts have two or three parts depending on the length of the putt and slope. A twenty foot putt has three parts, two feet from the hole, a middle and the first two feet, which is determined by the other forward parts. All of this brings it back to the face of the putter. Now you have your line set two inches in front of the ball. These thoughts should also determine your stroke. How's that?
Great drill, but for us mere mortals, I wonder if a better scoring system would be to record total feet remaining after all 5 putts, rather than feet holed. This is because amateurs need to focus on getting the first putt close to the hole. Holing a 20 foot putt but leaving the others a long way from the hole is no good.
Great video Phil and Mike. Thanks
New subscriber looking forward to improvement in putting obviously worked wonders for Scheffler he is different player now after 8 odd weeks off perfecting his putting with you Peter 🤘
Mr. Kenyon, just speaking from my perspective, how many golfers actually know the distance they're putting to ? How many take the time to look at the grain and determine if they're putting with, or against ? Just like using a mirror to help you set up over a putt and commit that feeling to memory when you don't use one, the same can be said for pacing off 4, 5, 10, 15 feet etc. and remembering the effort of the follow through to get the ball to the cup for the particular distance. I am an amateur golfer, but your basic tips for improvement in this most important scoring portion of the game, coupled with a basic understanding of how to gauge the slope, grain, and pacing off distance can reduce the score of a round by more than a few strokes. An average golfer shoots 96 in a round, and 40 strokes or more are made with a putter. I for one am grateful you share your knowledge so that when diligently practiced, you can roll the rock with feel and confidence and go from a high handicapper to a single digit getting more proficient with just this one club. Thanks for all you do.
Why doesn't alignment matter on long putts?
Phil, how do you calibrate how far to take the club back for a given putt length? Is this from trial and error? Is there a general guide? Thanks
Much too technical for me. Would prefer demo in real rather than stimulated setting so we see the real world effects of the concepts he's discussing.
It’s discussing a concept. I’ve done plenty of videos in real world. But you don’t need that to discuss a concept in theory.
Tour average is 90 bpm. This video sounds v complicated. Just get a metronome and set it to 90 and have every swing long or short put at this tempo. Bingo!
Metronomes dont work as they are evenly spaced. It’s not complicated it’s just that you aren’t as smart as you think.
This is great advice! Thanks
which putter are you using here, love the lines on it!
odyssey customised tuttle
You didn't say what the benchmarks are for different handicaps so how do you compare against others?
Using a metronome what number do you suggest for tempo. Thank you
Most people and in particular golfers do not know the difference between RHYTHM and TEMPO. They often use them as synonyms which they are not. I know you have an outstanding reputation as an expert on putting and as such an eminent authority you could help all Golfdom by setting forth two proper definitions. Cheers and great work. F
I took this coaching to the course - it made a measurable and significant difference -- thank you!!
This works for flat putts
Very good. Lots of good practical and relevant information. Thanks
love the drills but also, this has the best drums of any you tube golf channel. crunchy.
Presumably this only works if your putter is properly fit and you don't then need to manipulate your stance when you introduce the club. Why is it so hard to find somewhere that can properly fit a putter?
The neck bend attention has helped.
Very nice video, can you step into the putt holding the putter simply with your left hand and left foot? I feel that’s my dominant hand when I putt. Can I step into the pot with my left hand instead of the right hand and the right foot
Thank you for that video, I am someone who needs to stand behind the ball for a moment in order to see my line and then I line up the direction of my putter head before moving to the side. I sometimes take a practice stroke to the side having moved my putter back hopefully without changing its direction. What you say makes sense the only question I have is if I move my body closer before I move the putter in for the shot in the line again how do I keep from either jamming myself by being too close or by feeling as if I am then too far from the ball. I need to know how to adjust the putter position to my feet so that it’s comfortable and I’m coming straight back in through. Does that make sense do I just adjust my position based on sliding my hands up or down the putter to make sure that the putter head lies flat on the ground?
Isn’t this contrary to a recent video where you recommended setting the feet closer to the putt line and then setting the putter so that you do not misalign the putter to the right because the eye line would be incorrect?
Just done this drill at a lesson with Lee Sullivan 👌👌 Can’t wait to practice and play with this!
Totally confused, sorry
Well said....golf is a mental game and putting is the most revealing aspect of a competitor's mental performance
What is the relationship between aim line and trajectory at 2/3 point?
Brilliant...works every time. Misses are now on the high side so it's my read that is poor not my stroke.
How do you know when you have your eyes over the ball? The only way I know is when I drop a ball from my eyes to the ground. Is this something you eventually get a feel for? (and all that stuff)
This could be me
Mason Essam. Go on the boy!
That's me to a tee lol I'm putting daily on puttout in house but putt badly on the course
Good idea, any tips re those 2 and 3 footers?
Missed a couple of shockers yesterday which ruined my round. Something else to work on next time I'm practising.
