❤ your story! Good for you changing your life around. Keep sharing! Thanks!
I can relate to diving into running full speed ahead (setting big running goals) after deciding to make healthy changes in my life. Unlike you I was assisted with prescription medication for my major initial weight loss. It was a great encouragement and I ran several half marathons since. Now I’m doing a marathon Saturday. I’m a little disappointed that I have a knee injury and won’t necessarily be able to get a time I know I’d be capable of in ideal circumstances, but it’ll leave me lots of room to improve.
So glad you enjoyed our views. I was in awe when I ran a half on this course earlier this year. I’m running the 2024 Ogden Marathon as my first one. I found you while looking for encouraging content for slower marathon runners, and think it is so cool you happened to run the relatively small town marathon I’m starting with.
Ok Veronika, I’m going to remember this is a gift when I’m feeling the pain in my marathon this Saturday. You’re so right.
Thanks for sharing your story. It is encouraging to hear yours and other stories from this podcast as I prepare to do my first marathon while dealing with a knee injury.
Hi. I relate to hitting a point mentally where it’s like a switch flips almost and now I’m committed to getting healthier. I was losing job satisfaction at work, and for a few reasons I felt like I needed to focus on myself including to get healthy. That job ended in Aug 2022 and the next month I walked my first 5k event with my kids. I had an off winter and wasn’t sure what I’d do to get healthy. I tried multiple things. A doctor prescribed me a medication in June 2023 that helped me reach my weight goal (about 50 lbs.) by the end of the year. That really encouraged me and while I was on that I ran 5 half marathons in the second half of the year. This year I started early (Feb) and have run an event almost weekly since then (missing only 1/3 of the weeks). I’m up for my first marathon this Saturday, and have several goals ahead including more marathons and ultras.
I already commented on Instagram but yeah I’m with you in signing up for a few. I signed up for a 26.8 ultra and a second marathon before my first marathon which is this Saturday. If I didn’t sign up that early the second marathon would’ve already been sold out. It’s actually out of state and lines up with a vacation plan so if I didn’t sign up for this year I might never do that far away one. That’s how I justified it. Ha ha. I’m enjoying the podcasts with the bigger guys because I relate to that. I just lost a bunch of weight last year.
I am the opposite. I hate weights/gym and dropped out of memberships more than once, but loved running since starting events. After a recent knee injury I’m trying to get myself to like strength training.
Thanks for highlighting the back of the pack runners and sharing your story. My upcoming marathon has a 7-hour limit but pacers only up to 5 hours, and there isn’t much content for slower marathon runners online. So it’s great to feel more connected to a BOTP community.
You are both so inspiring. I really resonated when Sandra talks about training plans. As a new runner I am terrified of a plan because I feel I won't stick to it. But I have a marathon in December and not sure how that would look without a training plan. I currently use an app that doesn't have my whole week planned out but just 3 runs per week and sometimes I spread that into the next week.

I love your story! I think you are brave. I think it's important for people to know that even though you are so positive, it hasn't always been easy.
