"Smells Like Teen Spirit" analysis in Seattle
Taking you back to 1991 in the era of grunge, I'm standing in front of The Crocodile (re-opened club Nirvana & the like played regularly). Here, I'll pose the question about the lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit": would this song hold up solely as poetry as a teenage anthem in any era, or did it need to hit right when America was coming down from the 80's into a recession in order to gain mass appeal. What is the relationship between artistic works and the time period in which they were written? As always, I'm rambling, it's done only in one take, and remember that I'm using up my vacation time to share something I think is cool with you. Link to lyrics: www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nirvana/s...

Breadloaf & Robert Frost's "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening"
Просмотров 36210 лет назад
After 10 days of learning about writing from some of the best writers alive today, I took a minute to talk to you about one of my all-time favorite poems (and maybe one of Frost's, too) in front of a barn where he may or may not have awkwardly danced back in the day. Tips for the College Essay I Stole from Maggie Stiefvater
Просмотров 24010 лет назад
I'm regurgitating tips from a writing conference where Maggie Stiefvater (author of Scorpion Games, Shiver trilogy, Raven Boys Cycle, etc.) told us how to make memorable characters. On the way out I saw what must've been her car so I was creepy and made this video for you giving you the tips I think might help make your college essay stand out.
Crime and Punishment walking tour through the streets of St. Petersburg
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.10 лет назад
Had a fascinating walk in Raskolnikov's footsteps, and I tried to bring you along. It's choppy, and at one point I was chased out of Raskolnikov's courtyard by an angry Russian woman who currently lives in the building (sorry!), but all in all, it was a nice stroll. I hope it helps bring Crime and Punishment to life a bit for you the way it did for me. Thanks to the brilliant Victoria of Dancin...
Maurice Sendak's simple genius, aphorisms, and silliness at the NYPL

We talk about simple truths in picture books, the power of an aphorism, and I am totally immature as I enjoy the delights of the New York Public Library's exhibit on children's literature.
Hamlet "to be or not to be" analysis in front of Elsinore castle
Просмотров 77310 лет назад
We chat about Hamlet's existential questions in front of the Kronborg castle in Denmark. Please do not judge Shakespeare's masterpiece by my inadequate reading of the famous soliloquy. Also, I do talk a bit about suicide in the discussion. If anyone is feeling in that dark place, please talk to someone ASAP; it may not seem like it now, but I promise that place is a temporary place, and even th...
Dostoevsky's imprisonment & some of the politics behind Crime and Punishment

St. Petersburg Dostoevsky museum/house where he wrote The Brothers Karamazov
Просмотров 86410 лет назад
Want to see where Dostoevsky wrote The Brothers Karamazov? Me too. So I went, and tried to show you a bit of it as well. It's a museum now, and has been restored to look the way it did when he was living and writing there. At one point, in the kids' room, I couldn't get close, but you might be able to see the notes the kids wrote him while he was sleeping (he wrote late then slept in late each ...
Thinking like Holden in a cab in NYC: a close reading of Catcher in the Rye ch. 12
Просмотров 13410 лет назад
From the inside of a cab heading from JFK to Manhattan after a red-eye flight, I talk about the start of ch. 12 of Catcher in the Rye. What does how you describe your setting say about you? Where do the ducks (and where do we) go when things get cold? And why does life have to just keep on moving forward like that cab ride before we have the answers figured out? Sigurdur palsson "My House"
Просмотров 39210 лет назад
A perfectly delightful find on my quest for global poetry gems. Its comedic understatement and pleasant tone force the reader to question what a house really is. Taped in front of a house that does include walls, a roof, and windows that are different than doors in Iceland. www.transcript-review.org/en/issue/transcript-29-bordered-by-the-sea/sigurdur-palsson

Jonas Hallgrimsson, 19th century Icelandic poet forces us to think about what desperation for basic necessity does to us in his very short poem "The Farmer in Wet Weather." allpoetry.com/The-Farmer-in-Wet-Weather I also show you what 11pm at an Icelandic summer solstice music festival looks like if you make it through the poetry reading. :).

Robert Frost's Fire & Ice from the bottom of a volcano in Iceland
Просмотров 51510 лет назад
I ramble on about the stylistic genius of Frost's poem from the inside of the Thrihnukagigur volcano in Iceland. Trust me, it was hard to do. Even remembering my own name was tricky after being lowered down the height of The Statue of Liberty, but the magnificence of the location paired with the magnificence of the Frost's writing was a high moment in my life. You can find a copy of the poem it...

It seemed in his most hidden work of himself personally , that he had to constantly think through every single detail of every event after awhile . Once he recognized how few people truly spoke directly without ulterior motives , it seems he's incessantly apologizing for his own inability to communicate everything within his mind and heart accurately . When in actuality his mind and soul just really wants the very best for everyone everywhere throughout his entire lifetime , but he has this illness , and people mistake this kindness for him to be an Idiot , which is the title . He really did not need to be imprisoned , threatened with death , or hated by anyone , or feared for that matter . What was lacking is no one but NF really understood him , and she truly had a very difficult character life as well in the novel ~ the Idiot . Which few will ever comprehend or take time to read or listen to the 15.42 hours which is only part 1&2 of a 4 part book .... Thanks God Bless
