Between the Lakes Demonstration Farm Network

We're a network of farmers testing and demonstrating the best conservation practices to reduce phosphorus, nitrates, and sediment entering the Great Lakes basin. We are based in Northeastern Wisconsin, covering the Sheboygan and Manitowoc watersheds, and working in Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Calumet, and Fond du Lac Counties.
Interseeding with a Drone - Zak of Libertyland Farms' Experience + Recommendations
Demonstration Farmer Zak Kenneke discusses his experience interseeding a cover crop mix into a cornfield using a drone application. The goal with interseeding is to establish a cover crop before the corn is harvested to prevent soil erosion and improve soil health. Zak's trying different seeding rates and a diverse mix of species like clovers, buckwheat, and rye grass. Zak recommends starting with a drill for better seed placement if you're just getting started with interseeding, as aerial application can be finicky. Herbicide management is also a key factor for success with interseeding. Reach out to your agronomist for help designing your herbicide plan.

All the fields I have seen it advertised on are flat. I mean real flat. How much slope can it handle?

So you want me to buy one for every field I have… just say I have a 2000 acre field and it runs out of diesel fuel in the middle. I got a diesel fuel out to it or destroy my crop to get to it. Prefer just to have A Center pivot and water the corners.

Thanks for the video! But is nitrogen as a fertilizer if too much applied not hindering the bacteria on the root knots of this legume to establish? Because when the plants have enough nitrogen available they tend to not form those symbiosis with nitrogen-mining bacterias 🤷🏻♂️ Because why should they then.
First off, the immature alfalfa can't produce enough N for it and the corn. Second, he said they banded the N closer to the corn which will likely uptake most of it. Whatever is leftover, alfalfa will quickly uptake and use all of it instead of poisoning the ground water. Once the N levels are low enough in the soil, then alfalfa will recruit the rhizobia living in the soil and will build up nitrogen as long as the life of the stand.
