Learned everything about Bees on RUclips. A year later we are now trying to expand our colony for 4 maybe 6 hives. Such a great journey and learning about bees and overall anything new is such fun.
The Blue Hive Boost
After looking at the Blue Hive, we needed to work as a team to get these girls strong. Today we added a Nuc to give the girls the help they needed.
It seemed to work out well.
Thanks to the folks that comment and offer advice. Its well taken.

White to Blue with a 4 hive quick inspection

As an amateur bee keeper I am learning and applying my skills to our 4 hives. So far it seems to be working and for me its just not about the honey. Its about being good at something. Like nectar, its a reward.
First Swarm now in their forever home

This is a add on to first swarm including the original swarm capture and the relocation to their new permanent home. Very happy the swarm from a concrete plant has moved to the country.

I am a new beekeeper and loving it. 550am call out to one of my great mates concrete business. Not sure why the bees grabbed onto in concrete mixer but lets see if we can sort them out a better home. Here is the journey for these bees to a better place.
Introduce queen bee and colony to a failed hive split
Просмотров 107Месяц назад
I did a split from my flow hive that was overflowing. I took out 3 brood frames and 2 full honey frames. It didn't go as well as I expected. It was all my fault as I did a hive inspection two weeks later and managed to break open the queen cell (I think) that was underway. Could have cried. To help the hive we have added a very strong small colony. Lets hope this all goes well.
Two new small hives moving to Big Green

I purchased two small eight frame hives, put them at the farm and this is a week later. Damn ! one empty and the other going strong. It seems the two hives consolidated in the last week and left one vacant. Now this is a move to a brand new 10 frame hive. Overall happy as I have a very solid hive now.
Yellow Hive Inspection after Split

About 3 weeks ago I split off my big Flow hive brood (2 frames) and bees (approx 3000) into a new hive. Not sure how well it went, but working on it.

I managed to kill a few Bee's here. With so many its quite daunting to manage them all. My aim is to get better, learn and enjoy.

Six months ago I knew nothing about bees. Thanks to all the people here I have learned so much. Just another milestone on our journey. The goal here is to my sure the team have enough food in their stores for the next few months and how we can keep them warm and happy. If anyone can suggest things I can do better, please comment.
Second Harvest - Honey Flow
Просмотров 879 месяцев назад
This is the second harvest of my Flow Hive. Started with 7500 bees (four frames) and now its grown to 20 frames with 2 active brood boxes. I assume more than 40,000 bees. They produce the BEST honey.... The queen is a superstar and still haven't found her., Honestly, given the great job she's doing I really don't want to bother her. Next steps are preparing for winter, and working out how I kee...

Pre Harvest Check on the Flow Hive (learning)
If I can't find a queen, and need to, I set up two boxes on a bottom board with a queen excluder between the boxes. I put a frame with brood in the bottom. Then I shake the frames into the top box. The queen can't get to the bottom so, you will eventually find her as the worker and nurse bees go to the brood under the excuser. I do this to do mite checks without killing my queen. Just take a sample of nurse bees below the excluder, safely because the queen is excluded.
That's great advice and makes sense. Where I am, we currently don't have mites but they are in Australia now and heading down south slowly. They have been detected at the border. I do expected in the next 1-2 years I will be dealing with them. Thanks again. agriculture.vic.gov.au/biosecurity/pest-insects-and-mites/priority-pest-insects-and-mites/varroa-mite-of-honey-bees/varroa-mite-current-situation
Hi Mike, that's a really nice setup you have there. I got my first bees in 2019 and started my RUclips journey about the same time. You seem to be doing well so far. I'm guessing you are "down under" so, the honey flow must be going on down there. I'm want to watch your flow hive saga. I do have a bit of advice for you I'll share. It's based on my experience. I've lost most of my colonies in the last two seasons. I blame that on growing faster than I can keep up. My advice would be not to grow too fast. The work can expand exponentially and it's better to stay with a few hives until you are sure you can handle more. 4-6 is probably ok on your second year but, there is till a lot to learn as you expand. Already "Blue" has some serious issues. Far too few bees and perhaps queenless. You will need to do something if it isn't going to fail. Did you check the queen cap in Green? If there isn't an egg or larva in it, wouldn't worry but, you should keep a check on it.
Thanks for the comments and advice richardhyatt-beekeeping. I love advice and it really helps me! You got it, I'm from Australia. Melbourne (southern) and just clocked 1 year of bee keeping. I can really see how it can get out of hand, and I will be staying with 4, I'd love more by 4 is about all I can manage. For the blue hive, I did post a followup video, adding a Nuc (with a queen) to boost it. It was done last Saturday and I will follow up this week on how its going. Appreciate the feedback. thanks Mike
Another great video, love your enthusiasm and optimism. Blue hive looking much better now but I have to say, I hope you didn't pay full price for that Nuc, you should have had bees covering all 5 frames, and a bit hard to see in the video but should have been a mix of all brood stages, eggs, larvae, pupae and capped brood, all I seen was a little patchy brood and I did see chewed down queen cells x 2 so I say they swarmed prior to you purchasing. Your yellow hive looks like it has a little nosema, keep an eye on that. Look for ward to the updates
Thanks a mill for your comments. Appreciated. I am concerned about "nosema" ....not sure what that is ...what do I need to do? (x)
The blue wouldn't have survived for much longer. Great work, mate. I'm looking forward to seeing how they progress.I would reduce the entrance in size so the guard bees have a easier time of it. Check the hive it could be many things, but for example AFB so you can rule out diseases.
Your comments inspire me ! Really appreciated. I'm solo and relying on the advice from RUclips and my shop guys (both who don't come on site :) ) ,,, For the next 2 months it will be 25-40 degrees Celsius, so reducing the entrance worries. Can I ask what is AFB please? Again your advice is gold. Cant thank you enough.
@@msflt I am in Albury, NSW, up on the border. It's going to be the same here, mate, AFB- American foulbrood disease
Hey Mike, great video and thanks for sharing. Just a tip, your blue hive looks queen less so I would confirm that and if so do a combine with your green hive. You mentioned seeing capped brood in your other hives but no mention of eggs or larvae so I would certainly focus on looking for eggs or at least very small larvae to confirm queen presence in recent days if you can't find your queens. I would be a little concerned with your flow hive as your bottom box should be full of eggs/larvae and brood if you had a queen present and you did not mention seeing eggs or larvae in top brood box. How did you do your split? did your queen go to the yellow hive and if so were their eggs in your flow for them to make a new queen?
Appreciate the comments and guidance. I have ordered a Nuc for the blue hive, going in tomorrow !. I will surely upload that process. For the flow hive, I did see brood in the top deep but not in the bottom. I will be monitoring that closely, well spotted. With the change of adding frames (which I forgot about) it should strengthen over the next couple of weeks. Ill keep providing updates too. thanks Mike
Hey Mike, I didn't see it. You may have put a frame of capped brood into blue to strengthen them. Cross comb gives the ladies a chance, and they do their own thing😂 how come you are running a double brood box. More for my own curiosity.
Hello mate, your comments are gold and I like advice and guidance to be honest. For the yellow hive (going strong and a split from the low hive 6 weeks ago), and in fact all hives I am trying to grow them. I will follow the flow hive setup I have. For the yellow hive, I have the two brood boxes which I will add a Flow super on top in the next two weeks. Once the green and blue get stronger, I will double up again and add the Flow super to them as well. For me, I don't have all the extra harvesting gear, so the flow system really suits me.
@@msflt, Out of your stronger hives, I would shake the nurse bees off and place them into the blue hive and a couple of frames of honey for them or sugar syrup and pollen paddy or bee fondant. This will boost them considerably. They are your bees; the content of the video is good, mate.
I am with @glennmccarthy8773 great video but your white hive should have been reduced to a nuc and really should have left it until you could confirm a laying queen before transferring, you could have a virgin out on a mating flight if it was a cast swarm and she may not find her way back now as you changed hive. Your green hive not strong either so you do need to confirm queen presence either from finding eggs or her majesty herself, use your camera to take close up shots so you can have a real good look inside those polished cells. Your flow hive, I would be addressing that bottom box ASAP to sort out that cross combing as you need to be able to inspect each frame and I would not be putting the flow super on until your other boxes have bees on nearly every frame and built out first, otherwise too much space for them to manage which is what the foul odour could be, too much condensation maybe.
Hey Mike, why didn't you place them in a Nuc being such a small hive, beside that great little video, mate
Hey mate, I looked at the time (spring > summer) a lot of resources around, water close and really a good spot. I got into bee's Dec 2023 and my flow hive exploded in two months. Feb 2024, the flow hive gave us a lot of honey. Expanded now to 4 hive...most likely my max (its a hobby project) so see how it goes. Ill keep uploading updates.
Great , Ants have a good run up on those straps
The ground has a lot of cinnamon around it which keeps them away The hive itself has oil caps so they cant climb up from the bottom.. Over the past 6 months, I've seen only 5-10 ants.
Hi, We enjoyed your beekeeping video except for the offputing background music making it hard to watch, please delete this idea in future videos. We watch many beekeeping videos from worldwide presenters and none have background music, keep them coming, Regards Anton (Australian beekeeper)
Roger that, its my mix of music keeps me happy while I do this . Hope the bee's like it too. That said, I will turn it right down.
@@msflt Mike, Thanks for the reply, you will be providing more enjoyment for viewers without the music, Regards Anton
Hey Mick The hives looking great. Zio gave mum a jar can't wait to try it. I was wondering what you do with the wax? Do you take it out or leave it?
At the minute not touching anything. I assume down the track I might need to remove it....not sure. I'll be asking the experts for their advice. Cheers Mike
Hi Mate, just a few constructive comments for you, please do not consider them criticisms, just trying to make things easier for you. 1. Don't put your super and excluder on the ground, put them on the inner cover instead. The first time they find your ankles from crawling along the ground, you will know why. 2. Look for eggs and larvae to see if you even have an active queen. Capped brood just means you had a queen in the last few weeks, eggs tell you the last few days. 3. When you removed the first empty frame in pt1, you should have kept it out to give you more room to inspect the brood. 4. You need to be careful with the banging, clanging and dropping frames back into the box. Kind of like a 747 hitting your roof while your watching tv. 5. Your strap isn't doing anything the way you have it, can't stop forward/backward movement, the camlock buckles are useless, at least if you strap around the box assembly with a ratchet strap and it falls over it will stay intact. If an animal hits that strap it will be game over. 6. Over smoke is worse than no smoke, blowing air at them is not high on their list of likes. Smoke is to mask their defence pheromones, that is why you smoke the front guard bees before you start, the rest usually only fire up once you start killing them. Follow note 3, this stops you rolling and injuring them when you remove a frame. Hope this helps you on your beekeeping journey.
Awesome feedback and appreciate the time you took. I will follow your advice too. (Just saw this) and again thanks.
