On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (registered as N1819U) serving the flight crash-landed at Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering a catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine due to an unnoticed manufacturing defect in the engine's fan disk, which resulted in the loss of all flight controls. Of the 296 passengers and crew on board, 112 died during the accident,[a] while 184 people survived. Thirteen of the passengers were uninjured. It was the deadliest single-aircraft accident in the history of United Airlines.[3][4] Despite the fatalities, the accident is considered a good example of successful crew resource management. A majority of those aboard survived; experienced test pilots in simulators were unable to reproduce a survivable landing. It has been termed "The Impossible Landing" as it is considered one of the most impressive landings ever performed in the history of aviation

VASP Flight 375 was a domestic commercial flight operated by Viação Aérea São Paulo (VASP) using a Boeing 737-317. On September 29, 1988, the aircraft departed Porto Velho International Airport, Rondônia, destined for Galeão International Airport, Rio de Janeiro, with scheduled stops at Cuiabá, Brasília, Goiânia, and Belo Horizonte. During the final phase of the flight, between Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, the plane was hijacked and diverted to Brasília. The hijacking was not successful and the aircraft landed safely in Goiânia. The only fatality as a result of the hijacking was the First Officer, Salvador Evangelista. The hijacking was carried out by Raimundo Nonato Alves da Conceição, who aimed to crash the plane against the Planalto Palace in Brasília. This incident is the subject of the 2023 Brazilian film "The Hijacking of Flight 375."
