Hi, my name is Katrina. I'm 30 years old. I have congenital right sided hemiplegia which is a form of cerebral palsy affecting one side of the body.

Life Update and my experience in the first lockdown
Since covid, I just put out my fist for a fist bump. It's very common with mountain bikers, whom I interact with more than any other group of people. I have had the occasional awkward moment when doing that, but that's not on me. That's on them.
Hi Brendan, wow yeah, I haven't done fist bumping in years. I'd completely forgotten that was thing for a while haha. It's either hugging with my friends or handshaking or waving with new people.
Hello beautiful, Hope you and family are all keeping well, you shouldn't feel uncomfortable putting out your left hand to say hello as it's an instant reaction to someone who is left handed, my sister and brother do it all the time, it's down to the person who is right handed to have the sense to change hands. We love you no matter what hand you want to say hello with, or if you don't want to shake hands, then just a hello is completely acceptable 😊😊😊. Xxx
Hi Donna, thank you, hope your family are doing well too. Thanks hopefully in the future I won't. Yeah definitely. Wow yeah absolutely, there are times when someone shakes hands with me with their right hand and I realise later they are actually left handed. Yeah I'd rather just not have the handshaking at all, just say hello, that would be so nice and sometimes it is like that but yeah it depends on the person xx
@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia to be honest, I don't hand shake or hug since covid , I'd rather not take the risk. 💗
@@donna1482 Yeah, totally understand that
@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia you just remember, if you don't want to shake hands, then a hello is just as polite. You do what you are comfortable with. 💗
@@donna1482 Yeah absolutely ❤ thanks Donna
Anxiety is hemiplegia's evil partner . Sending positive vibes ❤ I know the struggle
Oh definitely, It's the worst. Aww thank you 😊
Thank you for sharing your experience. Could you please share a video with us about how and when you learned to speak? Did you have any difficulties with speech and communication in your childhood. My child is 6 years old and is still delayed in speech." ---
Hi, yes of course, I'll do that for my video after next. Yes, I did find it difficult to express myself and process information growing up. I'm sorry to hear that. I'll send you a link to the video I made talking about that. ruclips.net/video/faNHl6RKP5I/видео.html Here you go 🙂
Thank you 🌷
Thank you for all your interesting videos.
Thanks for sharing your experience.you are amazing girl
Life isn't a race -- to quote the great Mr. Ferris Bueller, "life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." I am so impressed by the candidness and maturity you show in your videos. As a late 30's parent raising a son with hemiplegia, thank you for sharing your experience. From what I can tell, you've got more perspective than most of my peers, including those who might outwardly appear to have everything "on track."
Hi, thank you so much, that's really kind of you 🙂 Does your son have left or right sided hemiplegia?
@@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia He also has right sided hemiplegia from a perinatal stroke and is very much in the toddler years at the moment. He will undoubtedly face some unique challenges, but just as you've demonstrated in your videos, he seems to find a way of doing things. Your videos give us reason for optimism and I am so glad that there are creators like you sharing your stories.
Ah right, yeah I very much did too but I would say that being born and growing up with this disability is that I never feel down about it as I don't know any different. I've just learnt how to adjust. I'm so glad my videos have helped 🙂
My hemiplegia is left sided and what's really weird is winking. I can wink with my left eye great but can't with my right.
oh right okay, yeah definitely, that's the one thing I find quite odd.
This documentary is an excellent piece of filmmaking. It is proof that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. Reach for the stars and one day they will name one after you!
Thanks Neil!
Nice one
🤡💀damn this happens to me always I feel empathetic to people in harm or some pain or issue Similarly I felt the with you My intrusive thoughts went : yeah she looks so gorgeous bro fr , she's got a similar condition as you do , if you do not recover completely from it , you should go marry her And have a very intimate relationship with that gorgeous and live together till the end! 🤡 And then I got recommended the video where I saw you're 30 and I guess you even have a boyfriend 💀 I'm sorry girl , this is the effect of not having a girlfriend ever yet
I feel pity for us both Im a 16 male and I had a stroke about a month ago and I've recovered and discharged from the hospital yet I can't move my left hand yet though I can move my left leg , its still very depressing for me not be able to work like times before I'm happy and grateful to you for uploading videos to help people ❤️ You look very great bri'sh girl! 🙂
Hi, thank you for commenting, how did your stroke happen? I'm sure you'll improve as time goes by. It must be quite a shock. how are you now? I do look very young. I still get mistaken for being a teenager. It can be quite annoying sometimes haha
Im really struggling with spasticity so thank you for these ❤
No problem, hope the exercises help 🙂
I dont know if you have a gym near you, but i started going to one regularly for the past two years or so. Not that its healed all the stiffness in my right side, but ive found it noticeable enough how less tense it is on a daily basis, and also subjectively, i feel like its been beneficial to controlling my seizures. I just use most of the regular weight training equipment. Some of them i cant use because its physically not feasible, but i use and adapt other ones so to help my right side become more flexible. And nothing to do with the hemiplegia, but mentally, exercising helps me feel more calm and alert, even though life isnt exactly treating me the best right now.
There are gym's near me yeah, I've been meaning to do it for a long time. That sounds really good. Exercise helps with my mental health too. At the moment the main exercise I do is walking.
The left handed verticle mouse i started using a couple years ago. I cant image myself ever going back to using a normal mouse 😂
Oh god yeah, It was so weird using that mouse at the beginning but I can't use a normal mouse now. Everyone else I know finds it's too strange 😂
The anxiety about seizures, totally get it! Mine are more frequent, but somehow i dont let the worry overcome me. When i feel it coming on though, its like im having a panic attack. And holding your right hand with your left, i do that too, and i also wonder afterwards why i was holding it when i see the pic. For me, i feel like holding the right hand is a subconscious thing, like even when im sitting down, i realize im just holding my right hand. Also, i dont know if the range of motion allows for it for your right hand, but whenever i feel like my wrist or upper arm area is tensing up, i bend my arm backward, and i push my fisted hand against the right side of my body/ around the rib cage area. I guess imagine your elbow facing outward and wrist/hand facing in. I mean its no exercise or anything, but it helps to relieve the tension.
Ah right, how often do you have yours? It's annoying, I swear the less you have them the more you worry it's going to happen. Yeah same with me. Definitely feels like a panic attack. Yeah I do that too, don't even realise it happening. I have to concentrate to not do it. Oh wow okay yeah. My hand just goes into a fist and I try to open it up to relieve the stress of it but I mostly just put my arm to my stomach to hide it.
I have to give the hand and finger exercise ball a try…my fingers are always clenched in a fist so trying to make it straight is very tough! Thanks so much for the recommendations!
No problem, hope it helps. Yeah I get that.
Sandals! Oh my goodness, that is the bane of my existence! Annoying doesnt even begin to describe how much i hate them! Last year i did buy the sandals that strap around the foot, but its bulky vs normal sandals. I do remember wearing a brace too when i was kid. Dont quite remember what the purpose was 😂. Can i ask about the wedges that you put in your shoes? Is there a website or somewhere i can find out more info? Thanks in advance! Love watching all these videos. Someone who actually understands the struggles that i dont mention to anyone is so nice to hear
Yeah sandals are so irritating! Oh yeah I get that. So hard to find light sandals with a strap. Yeah I felt like that too, back when I was a teenager, think I would have been a lot worse off if I didn't wear it though. I get all my wedges from the orthopaedic centre I go to but I'm sure there is a lot you could find online but I wouldn't be an expert on it. Thank you so much, that means a lot. Love getting in touch with other people with hemiplegia 😊
I know this is two years old so maybe youve figured these things out, but about the shoe laces, i use something called “lock laces”. Kind of hard to explain, but if you google it, im sure youll understand how it works. After i found this, ive been putting it on all the shoes i wear. About the nail clippers, its hard for me too, but i sit down, and put the nail clipper on my knee, and then try to push down with my right hand. Doesnt always work the first time since its like a balancing act, and it takes a bit of time, but im able to cut eventually. And the handshake! I totally get it! My hand is stuck in a fist all the time, so i just use my left hand to shake their right hand 😂
Oh yeah, I do know about that, my mum always called them magic laces when I was young, I have put them in some of my shoes. I have started using an electric nail clipper which has changed my life. I use that every time I have to cut my nails. It only really works though if you can use your hemi hand as a support. Thanks though, I never really thought of doing that method before I had that. I have actually started telling new people that I can only shake with my left hand but it takes a lot to say that. When I say that most people turn their right hand around instead of putting their left hand out which I think is a little weird so yeah I just end shaking there right hand anyway 😂
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences living with hemiplegia. I also have spastic hemipleggia, as well as having epilepsy, and all the insecurities and worries and troubles that you deal with, i can totally relate to! So thanks so much for sharing! Looking forward to watching more vids. Many thanks!
Hi, thanks for watching. It's really comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this.
I have the same thing but a little more seizures.
Hi, thanks for commenting, what type of seizures do you have?
Never ever ever feel embarrassed for being loved . Be grateful you have the wonderful parents you do . Im 49 struggling with hemiplegia and could not make it without my parents right now. ❤ Your videos are inspiring
Oh yeah, I love my parents. I don't know what I'd do without them really. Thank you Kerick! 😊
2:03 🙂
Hi Do you get tired easily while doing tasks? Do you get more time in studies or work to do things? Or do they give you breaks? I heard it uses up three times more energy than someone who doesnt have hemiplegia
Hi Kina, I do yeah, normally at work when I serve customers for a long period of time. When I was at school I got extra time for exams and sometimes did the exam in a classroom rather than in a big hall with everyone else so it wasn't so overwhelming. I get extra breaks at work mainly because of my epilepsy. Over tiredness is one of triggers so that helps a lot. Yeah I get much more tired than other people who are able bodied. My left leg gets very tired after I've stood up or walked for a long period of time because it has to work harder to make up for my right leg being 2cm shorter.
@@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia thanks.....yes I will have to remind this for the situations to come.
This is really helpful. We recently adopted an 8 year old boy with epilepsy and right sided hemiplegia. We have contemplated getting a dog or a cat. Do you have any thoughts on what pet would be best?
Hi, I'm glad. I've always leaned towards cats as I've grown up with having cats as pets but I think either a dog or a cat would be great.
Hey just recently discovered your RUclips channel and videos and I have left sided hemiplegia and was wanting to ask you on how you get around doing daily task. Also your such a big inspiration.
Hi, thank you so much! Well I did everything one handed before my wrist operation but with most things now I can use my right hand as a support which has really helped like tying my hair up and cutting up food. I used to need help with most things when I was younger but I now use gadgets that help with my independence. I use an electric nail clipper to cut my nails and a board with spikes and a clamp on to cut vegetables and spread butter on toast and stuff like that.
Once I understand my disability (hemoplegia on the left side) it’s made me love it so much much more because I know I can do it I just gotta practice. We all can, I’ve also always wanted to meet someone with right sided hemiplegia.

Hi, thanks for commenting. Nice to meet someone else with right side hemiplegia
@@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia same here. Nice to meet you too
Hey Katrina ! i accidently found your vids and think they are really interesting ! My life did a 180 turn one year ago when i got an hemorraghe stroke (+ surgery after the stroke to remove a bad vein) in my right side of the brain so i'm now left sided hemiparese. i'm 25 year old guy who did alot of competitive sports before my stroke but now thats all gone... , thank god i'm from Belgium and the healthcare is excellent here, i have top notch physio therapists who help me improve to my best self that i can be. I too became very self conscious about my disability (like always putting my bad hand in my pocket because i can't naturally swing it) and avoiding stressy situations because my spasticity gets worse (also cold weather is horrible) . i developped anxiety and also panic attacks, but it's getting better. i still walk with a foot brace on some occasions because i have a mild foot drop and i can't fully control my foot. It's true that it's a "hidden disability" because we learn to hide our weaknesses, i noticed that alot of people don't know anything about it and on some occasions they tend to minimize our struggles. Sorry for my english it's my 3rd language haha. All the best !
Hi, so glad you found my videos. What’s your name? I’m sorry to hear that. That must have been really hard to adjust to. What competitive sports did you do? Wow, I was just in Brugge two months ago. I love Belgium. That’s great you’re getting good healthcare. Yeah I started putting my hand in my pocket around when I became a teenager. I’ve just automatically done it over the years. I’ve tried not doing that recently though but I do it more now when I feel like my right side is tensing up. I only have one other friend who has hemiplegia and he doesn’t feel self conscious about that, it’s nice to know I’m not alone in that. Anxiety and panic attacks are awful. What do you get anxious about? Mine come and go but yeah it’s mainly to do with my epilepsy. How do you find wearing a brace? I found them quite annoying when I was a teenager but I know they really helped when I was growing. When I meet people for the first time they have absolutely no idea what hemiplegia is and I just think it’s so weird but I guess it’s not as common as autism for example. Your english is perfect, don’t worry about that at all.
There is sometimes in life when you stop feeling so alone inside when you realize, some people are struggling with a similar condition, i mean it's great to hear how you are facing life. I've got OCD, epilepsy and left side hemiparesis, anxiety. Would love to get in touch with you btw!
Hi Katrina i was born with a hemiparesis, I'm 28 years old. It touched me so much how you talked so openly about this things... I think this is my first time listening somebody with similar issues... Thank you ❤

Hi Kerick, I'm sorry to hear that, that must have been really hard. I've had hemiplegia my whole life. It's part of who I am. I would find it so weird to be able bodied. Can't imagine how hard it is trying to adjust to everything and especially going through a stroke in your adulthood. Aw thank you, glad my videos are helpful.
@@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia in so many ways you are able bodied though. You have found a way to persevere and overcome your daily challenges and this is a huge inspiration for me as I am trying to navigate my way through this life altering event ❤
Thank you so much Kerick! That's so kind of you. I've grown up using one hand to do most things so I don't even think about it anymore. Making these videos has pushed me to buy more equipment to help with my independence though which I wouldn't have done beforehand. What challenges do you have with your left hemiplegia? can you use your left hand as a support?

Hi Luke, what caused your hemiplegia? aw thank you, so glad you relate.
@@KatrinaOConnorHemiplegia Hey Katrina, I have an inoperable brain AVM located in my left parietal-frontal lobe.
