Why You Should Give a F**k About Farming
Watch author of ‘Why You Should Give a F**k About Farming’, Gabrielle Chan on our next Book Club.
In our second Book Club, we featured Gabrielle Chan, author of ‘Rusted Off: Why Country Australia is Fed Up’ (September 2018) and ‘Why You Should Give A F*ck About Farming‘ (August 2021) in a candid conversation with MaiaGrazing co-founder, Bart Davidson.
Together, they discussed the inspiration behind the book and why farmers and non-farmers should get behind its message. Gabrielle shared her perspective behind regenerative agriculture, how it’s impacted her, and what’s next in her literary journey.

Regenerative Agriculture (RegenAg) has been introduced to a mainstream audience in recent times. One example is the Netflix documentary, Kiss the Ground. Another example is the growing interest by chefs and consumers to source and consume sustainable produce. A mindset shift is happening from the rise of the “conscious consumer”. As a result, we have the opportunity today to ignite the public’s...

Winter is Coming - Jim Gerrish Webinar
Good vid!
I know this is 4 years old…. We’ve never used pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, vaccines, or anything artificial in our cattle since 1912. Our beef have only been pasture raised and pasture finished for 20 years. We did use a 50/50 corn/oats ground mix when we ran dairy cattle at approx 8# each per day. I guess we were really lucky because I don’t remember any not breeding back and we rarely lose a calf.
What’s the oldest cow you’ve had on your farm still calving? How old is too old?
Excellent talk , why isn't any one commenting on this . Interesting stuff keep up the good work .
this series with Jim is excellent
Thank you for this info!!!
I don't know if it occurred to others but if cattle limit their travel away from water we don't need to build fence--just keep moving the water. Thoughts?
Thank you for consistently high-quality, helpful presentations ❤
For those of you who still worship the queen 😂😊
Still being of help 3years later. Curious when swath grazing makes more sense than leaving standing grasses?
As a new grazier (3 years), I don’t know where I’d be without people like Mr. Gerrish. I hope to kick the hay habit this year!
This is really a "meet my farm, here's sorta kinda what we do when we aren't doing something else" and definitely not a cutting out the middle man in regenerative agriculture. I've seen far too much of this lately in the regenerative ag videos and it severely discredits the industry.
Great content!
I agree with everything said, but never mentioned having to manage 30% more head of cattle. Both sides have their sort. How many 14 year old cows do you have as a commercial guy; the cows that bred back early and have 4 daughters in your herd is worth more over time. Most sorts happen for a reason.

1 of the best ways to increase profitability is to do organic direct sales to consumers, you get significantly higher profits if you're willing to spend the time and effort building your clientele.
Do you figure inches of snow in your water to rotation equation?
You should consider to make the examples on different slides and not just drawing it all over the same slide.
This was great! As a city boy who plans to enter into ranching, I need an understaning of the mechanisms involved in the process. This is the foundation I have been looking for!
You'll need a lot, lot more. This is a fraction of the foundation and then there's the rest of the structure. Go to your library and local farmers federation or similar and consume as much as you can.
Wish we could see the slideshow. He’s a handsome man but very little info on the hat
Am so happy to find this channel.
This guys a legend. Great presentation. Thanks for sharing!

For more Jim Gerrish, take a look at Stockman Grass Farmer magazine. He writes in every issue!
You are amazing Stuart Austin
We have been trying to increase our basin wild rye forage the last 6-7 years. Cows will eat basin wild rye in the spring (don't let them) and in the winter, but they won't hardly touch it in the summer unless forced to. If I could have 1/3 of my ranch pasture under basin wild rye, I don't think I would ever feed any hay. I have seen my cows when moved into a new pasture choose basin wild rye over high quality alfalfa hay freshly put out. Hard to germinate, but when established basin wild rye is like magic.
I think sooner or later we will come to understand and accept that we have to make sure that all our decisions are socially, environmentally and economically sound using Holistic Management or something better to achieve that, and that being good at planning the grazing wont cut it long term.
Why doesnt Jim uses his livestock to improve the land outside of the pivot?
Great info! I learned a ton! Thanks Jim!👏👏👏
So this entitled brat is judging farmers who haven’t had the same privilege this spoilt brat has had? Sorry bimbo but not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Generational farmers are doing the best they can while people like you unfairly criticise because you think you know better because you’ve gone to a few seminars and your daddy bought you an oversized hobby farm. Give me a fucking break! Disgusting!
Excellent point.
Helpful vid
Until a cow makes 11 yrs of age...she effectively has made me no net income. Most everything is development and maintenance.
How the hell do you figure that?
I want a cow ~1100# (500 Kg) the bulls around twice that. to look at nature, the cows were ~1100# and the bulls 2000# (big or fat bull's fertility is as happened as one starved)
Hello The title should be changed. Might I suggest..."A small farm's backstory and vision". This comment is being made about 20 minutes in and still waiting for the actual market plan and execution. This is a noble cause no doubt. Yet the title is misleading. Sheep were brought on not because of customer demand but to deal with the forbes growing. Who are your customers? Questions questions questions? Change the title!
12:03 "those who still worship the queen" The USA is still using the Imperial measurement system invented by the Romans.
😂
Thanks, valueble info
This is great with the data to back up desicion making.
I have been studying market gardening and pasture raised animals for almost 3 years but have not been able to get a place to homestead yet. Other considerations. We want to stop grazing a paddock when there is not enough plant leaf left to absorb sunshine for photosynthesis to both rebuild the above ground plant for the next grazing and to feed the roots and the soil biology. The plant uses photosynthesis to make sugars for the roots to emit exudates to feed soil biology which bring 41 different minerals to feed the plant. The soil biology can even find water for your plants during a drought. I want to only let the animals graze on the tops of the plants as the sugars and proteins are concentrated there. That means the animals do not have to eat as much mass to get sufficient nutrition. They can eat in the early morning and go ruminate in the shade. I want to use 16 different seeds to take advantage of what Dr Christine Jones called Quorum Sensing. The increased biodiversity will build soil and allow mycorrhizal fungi to serve 16 different plant varieties. The animals will eat what is best for them nutritionally in the first day. I am studying bringing in chickens and or ducks to graze after larger animals. Chickens eat the fly larvae before they become flies on day five after the feces hit the ground. Ducks love to eat insects. Love this quote. You don’t have a slug problem, you have a duck deficiency. -
This is the best explanation of the factors used to determine rotational grazing which I would prefer to call a paddock system.
Patiently waiting for a spring webinar with Jim gerrish!
lol
Beautifully eloquated!!
SW Iowa Guy Your presentations are really quite scholarly, yet very practical. I’m a neophyte to forage management as you and others are proponents for. Yet, I’m a long-time cattle producer.
Does it provide any advantage to use slightly larger Bulls to breed slightly smaller cows after normal difference in size is factored in?
Using a large bull will throw a larger birth-weight calf, which may cause birthing dificulties. You want a live, thrifty calf that gets up quickly and gains rapidly. Use short legged parents with forage fermenting barrel of a gut.
I agree with not wanting to breed a large bull with a small frame heifer. I look at the bull and the bull’s parents and avoid a huge bull when buying one. I’d rather have a 1,600-1,800lb bull, even as 1,200 if out of our program, and then use an adult bull for cleanup. I want easy calving, especially for the heifers.
Awesome effort guys. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation Stu & Mary & well hosted Col. A voice for those not ready or able to do so yet. Reach in
thank you guys for this!! i suffer from P.T.S.D and many head injuries and suffered 4 widow maker heart attacks and a stroke! i find comfort just being around any kind of animals, in the spring here in the u.s. i `ll be starting a sheep farm! thank you for these videos
Love these! As a new farmer in northen Ontario Canada I love these lectures and take great value 🤗
thanks
Thank you
