Naim have forgotten top quality c.d.players, its all about streaming with them, there is a good market for quality cd players , just look at Cyrus audio, Luxman, accuphase, altlol,so until there produce a quality cd player iam not interested, they have the engineering skills to do this, iam not saying they should go a full range of c.d players but just a couple a mid price like the cd.5i and player to match the new range

I'm generally against dnr tinkering. But i thought LOTR,T2 4k ain't that bad.But the i look at the True lies 4k,its just a lazy job.First 30min really great and after that is from scene to scene. The main problem they used the same level of grain removal accross the whole film. For example daylight scenes that doesn't need dnr at all,as in them unless its 16mm,there is no visible grain.Dnr was still used, wich resulted faces without definition, loss of detail in highlights and generally very flat looking scenes

I am with you Phil. I also agree with the LG approach to HDR and FMM. Even as a purist, I get behind it. Mainly bc it’s giving a better overall experience, and utilizing the panel’s ability. A lot of reviewers claim DTM needs to always be off in FMM for the most accurate image. While that is true to an extent, it’s not always the case. The insinuation is DTM in FMM vastly overbrightens EOTF, like Cinema and Cinema Home modes. This is not true tho. FMM in conjunction in DTM has a different algorithm than the Cinema and Cinema Home modes. Meaning, it tracks EOTF much closer, while also utilizing the panels capabilities, for those none reference viewing environments. It’s also boosting colors, and brighten where needed, having a more impactful presentation, that isn’t rolling off the highlights so much, which dulls the image. I just dislike this hate or negative narrative towards DTM, bc it’s needed, and not every DTM algorithm is the same. Some are better than others. Some have different purposes. While a hard clip is what most of us want, it’s not always the best option for the content being displayed. I hope that makes sense. Even me, with my dark ass room, black out curtains….I use bias lighting, I find the DTM algorithm in conjunction with FMM, to often produce a more impactful, and immersive experience than using FMM with DTM off. On older sets, like my CX, DTM acted the same in Cinema, Cinema Home, and FMM. You could get identical images out of all modes if matched settings. This might of changed since firmware updates, as I no longer own my CX. It was the case when I got rid of it. So LG has basically granted my wish, in providing a better, or more accurate dynamic tone mapping algorithm, that tracks EOTF a lot closer, while utilizing the panels full capabilities for highlights. A more highlight focused DTM algorithm, which doesn’t affect APL nearly as much. It does take a trained eye, to see these differences in the DTM algorithms. The way the TV adjusts, it’s very subtle. If you change from Cinema with DTM on, to FMM with DTM on, they might at first look similar. However, what you will see, is FMM dimming, or reducing the APL slowly. Again, this is hard to see, and probably why many reviewer out there, aren’t taking about the different DTM approach between LG’s different picture modes. Even SDR picture modes are all equivalent, like they used to be on older LG sets.

Hi. Great information. I'm in uk and looking at sony 7 channel with the 360 mapping. Can only get 7ch in Europe. So I have the front LR speakers and looking to add the centre for 3.1.0 for now. My question is the monitor audio silver g7 wide speakers I have the tweater and 5 inch base driver. The center c250 has the same tweater and base drivers but additionally has a mid range driver. I've been told the 3 should match but can't get the taller towers with same arrangement. Am I over thinking it and the sound will be find with no mids on the wides. It is 5.1.2 I'm heading to as my room is medium and steep near rear wall. Thanks

It’s a pity the Bravia 9 is not available in 65 inches size in the UK. As a consumer, I will look into a competitor premium offering for that size. It’s weird that Sony has crippled the potential of its peak product with that move. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Is the brightness limited on the UK TV's like some are reporting it is in Europe due to power limits? Is this why nits are not referred to and instead it's "HDR" 3500,5000 etc. Sounds like it's not but would be good to explicitly clarify. Can't wait to get a 98 c855!!!

Interesting podcast , as an AV Forum member for many years luv the discussion. My latest music room two channel system is two Sonos Era 300s for streaming Dolby Atmos. These speakers have line in connections , left speaker is attached to a Sony CD player , right speaker to a project turntable . My beloved Akai 4000D Mk 2 is connected to the Era 300 speaker by the use of a low latency Bluetooth tx. My LG tv, which sits behind the speakers has airplay, which connects directly to the Era 300s, allowing me to watch music videos with no latency issues. The Sonos speakers recognise the analogue equipment as stereo and play it through both speakers. What a wonderful time to be able to pick and mix services and components.

  • @lint8391

Where on Earth did you guys, Ed Selley inparticular, get the impression that the "rules" of the £5000 thread were new components only? That was never mentioned in the opening post. And given the context of the thread that that thread was spun off from (one about cables), it was never the case. Or is there some unwritten rule that AVForums are for discussing new components only? Which would be an extreme ostrich approach, given the existence of ebay. £5000 is huge amount of money. It's more than I'd pay for a car! For that money, if you're looking at a digital only system you can put together something that will sound about as good as any system ever made. All you need to do is to: tear up the "new components (from a dealer) only" blinkered approach. Have some experience, leading to some understanding as to the principles behind what sounds World Class and what doesn't. Or to know and trust someone that does.

Apple TV 4K= Vol 55-75% Very Good quality (Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos) I’ll grade a purchase on these reference standards with the absolute best being 4k blu ray in general I’ll skip around to get good prices but nothing so far beats 1&2, but I guess I’m “niche” also in a peculiar way If I love it too much it’s got to be a 4k blu ray

I love that many more niche 4K / Blu-rays are being released. I am happy to buy some recent films (CGI etc) but too many are pretty dire so I prefer to buy the 4K / blu-rays with extras etc / booklets of Italian / French etc films from the 50s to the 80s and long may the smaller companies keep producing them. Certainly not a 4K only, prefer the lower costed blu-rays mainly as they are fine with a 40 inch 4K TV, I suppose I would go for more 4K if I had a 75 inch TV. I think they could release too many 4Ks and because of the cost, it would be hard to buy many of them. Blu-rays being often about a 1/3 to 1/2 of the 4K price, they are definitely easier to pick up.

Given all the streaming channels have "My List" bookmarks, a lot of films are being consigned to being watched later...then not at all, as more and more content is added to My List. Too much choice can be off putting comparable to no choice at all, but this is where IMDB and reviews are so handy. Personally I will not see a film or show if it scores below 6.0. I may be missing out on a few gems but that's life.

One issue important to me that was not touched on is why has Sony abandoned pedestal stands on its TVs. Like a very large number of people in the UK I live in a Victorian terraced house with chimney breasts, which means tv placement in a recess either side of that is more or less the only convenient option, and these recesses are usually not big enough for a wide equipment stand. My Sony KD48A9BU OLED has a pedestal stand that is 18½ inches wide, and the shelf it sits on is only 5 inches wider. I would like to move up to a 55 inch OLED and have always looked to Sony first for my TVs, but I don't see an upgrade path for me among the current crop of Sonys.

There is almost an argument to be had that if an HDR movie is graded for a dark room viewing. Will that be detrimental if you watch in a lit room? Will you be lacking in visibility impact or shadow detail and so on. It's sad most content is graded for 1K Nits. Because that is yesterday's news. HDR doesn't even begin to have an impact until after 1,000 nits. Everything is so compressed into a limited nit scale. A candle at 700 nits in a horror movie isn't going to look much different in brightness than someone turning on a super bright LED flashlight. They both end up with similar HDR effect and that is limiting. That LED flashlight should be 3000 nits on the screen. Then a sun rise with the sun at 4000 nits. Most of the scenes would be lower nits of course. But that HDR effect in specular highlights need range and not be crammed into 1,000 nits. Even OLEDs are now at 1500 nits and some can peak to 2,000 nits. HDR grading needs to be 4K nits from now on IMO.

43:50 This is a guy that is living in his own professional world. "Obviously people don't ALWAYS watch in dark room". I'd say 95% don't EVER watch in a dark room. My wife hates turning down the lights in our living room watching a movie or anything. Vast majority of people have lights on at most dim the lights. Then a few watch movies in a dark room. No one with a brain would sit and watch NHL hockey in a dark room. Live sports isn't "Graded for dark room" Viewing, lol. I have a perfectly light controlled room. I still use Bias lighting behind my TV, the room is fairly dim. But it has lights and I would very seldom watch anything in the dark. Don't conflate live Sports watching with some hoity toity "directors intent in a dark room HDR graded" content.

This is an example where we're talking to our core audience - who are home cinema (read home theater in the USA) enthusiasts rather than the general public. We should be talking to the general public as well, you're correct.

@@AVForumsPodcasts I understand. But even enthusiasts don't sit in the dark at all times and especially not watching sports.

The Julian take on whole part about sports should have the same D65 temp and so on. I don't agree with. There is no "creators" intent watching NHL hockey. It's just live broadcast of a very bright arena with white ice. D65 has a slight warm and yellowish tone. Talking about creators intent and so on for sport I just call BS on. A movie is pre-made and filmed with a certain intent and grading and color filters to change the mood of the show/movie. This is NOT something that is conducive to sports watching in a bright family room at home with the guys and a couple of beers. No then you'd want a bright image, slightly cooler color tone to make the white ice actually white. You want more detail in the image as well. This is live TV and no a movie. Also movies are graded if in HDR for DARK ROOM. No one sits and watches Hockey as though it's film makers intent in a dark room. That just seems dumb. Bright sports don't need a perfect EOTF IMO. If it lift mid-tones or the entire image who cares. It about it being bright and clear.

Let’s hope this new Bravia 9 gets a much improved colour space. How about 90+% in the BT2020 colour space.
