The Nugentino Cinema Podcast: Episode 11 - The Whale Review with Kylie and Drew
Right there with you. I’ve been a defender and promoter of this movie for two decades now. Initially saw this by mail delivery DVD from Netflix. Being sci-fi snobs me and my friend gave it about 15 minutes and thought this is complete garbage. Years later, we just happened to run across an isolated video of “Hey Boy!”. Suddenly being older and more open to The oddities film, I immediately bought a copy of the DVD, which was quite cheap because nobody cared about it. We watched it and we discovered that this is undiscovered and criminally underrated masterpiece. It has to be seen twice for sure. The first time we were trying to figure out what the hell we were watching and just rejected it. Once we understood it was a Thoroughly independent and off center sci-fi musical. We finally got it. One day cinema historians will be praising this movie. It actually hurts me deep down to know that this movie is not currently on anyone’s radar.
Its just bad.....its ik guys. U can say u dont like it lol
I watched it yesterday and just wanted 2see if anybody could tolerate it...horrible music
A bunch of nepo babies basking in their imagined self importance
Omg it was sooooo horrible...in every way...a bunch of self important woman speaking in fake British accents.. horrible perms and music....vapid self indulgence
Once Julie runs off it is all downhill for poor Ned .
Soundtrack's is made by Jim O'rourke
Nice review!
Thank you! Cheers!
Btw we’re getting a remake with David Ayer (guy who directed the first suicide squad film) which is fitting given Ayer said the dirty dozen was one of his inspirations. Let’s just hope he has less studio interference this time.
Superb analysis of the movie. Rikki really is very enthusiastic and passionate and mesmerising to listen to. Please bring him back to talk about other movies. ❤☺️
STEELY DAN...🎙🎹🎼🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵
Good stuff guys 👌
It was a great movie. I revisit it from time to time and still holds up
13:26 The man in the furry, the Prinz von Homburg was a wrestler/boxer who helped real pimps at Hamburg's Reeperbahn to "mediate" a few negotiations. His buddy was a bank robber and talkshow guest. The third guy in the pub was a real pimp.
So fun seeing Doug make more appearances in the FJCU (filmjunk cinematic universe)
Love that you added the laugh at the beginning!
That is thanks to my editor FilmApe ❤️
So glad y’all reviewed this one!!!

Love this movie so much. Im due for a rewatch!
❤❤❤
I signed the (very important) petition and was treated by a reply email that had this subject line: Film Ape still needs you, Joshua
Haha I got the same email.
Host read ads are bad, but have you heard podcasts with dynamically inserted ads? Awful. They'll cut in unexpectedly, repeat often, and sometimes be in a language you don't speak because the targeting is so bad.
Man, I haven’t heard that but it does sound terrible.
fast
I can’t wait for the triangle poop discussion!
Hey Drew, not sure if you have the Criterion Channel but "Tape" was still streaming last month. For 2001, it's shot as a pandemic-style production with maybe two locations and a few actors.
Of course it's greatly elevated by Ethan Hawke as your lead. 😉
Yeah it sounds pretty interesting. I’ll check it out soon!
Awesome review! ❤
Babylon requires cocaine to watch
Film Rat talking about one of my favorite flicks! Sweet!!!
nugentino said "like" A LOT on this episode 😙
Just listened to episode 600 again, Drew. Your Film Junk knowledge was exemplary. And yeah Reed is back.
Love this ❤
Hey Drew! My Name is Max Sloth and I wanted to reach out & say that I’m a huge fan of Film Junk & have been listening since 2012. I also have a deep encyclopedic knowledge of the shows past episodes (I would Consider myself a Film Junk Historian). I really love that You & Film Ape have started an official After show for Film Junk & I wanted to ask if I could join as a guest? I’m eager to join any conversations surrounding Film Junk & I would have a lot to contribute. I really enjoy the vibe & atmosphere that you both bring to discussing Film Junk & I would love the opportunity to join. Please let me know if this is something you’d be interested in. Thanks! - Max Sloth.
Thanks for reaching out man! Just DM’d you.
I was the 2nd Cruise vote -Glendon
love these, a podcast about a podcast I love
Great episode thanks
I'm about to start my podcast commenting on and dissecting Mouthbreathers Radio. Having trouble coming up with a title. Any suggestions?
Hmmm… maybe “Mouthbreathers Radio Radio”?
what a great idea! do you have plans to put it on podcast platforms?
Hopefully at somepoint but right now I can’t really afford the price to set some of that stuff up. I do have a patreon though which has an RSS feed. patreon.com/nugentinocinema
Awesome idea Drew. Been a listener since 2010. Feel like you’ve been as much a part of the podcast as the guys!!
This one's gonna be a banger
It would be cool if you could go over parts of old episodes. Like Jay’s driving test or his singing period. The classic time Greg watched Outlander or not?. There are hundreds of classic episodes.
For sure, we definitely want to do something like that soon.
NICE!
