As a medieval history major I can tell you that there was doubt about the validity of many different relics across Europe. There was a pretty impressive trade in fakes, to the point that there were more finger bones for some saints than were plausible for someone with the standard number of hands, fingers, and finger joints. But everyone had the “real” one and DNA didn’t exist yet let alone testing for a match, so… having someone argue the legitimacy of a relic while pilgrims still made the trek was petty standard.
