Layman terms: It should be as simple to push the silver button/pin inwards then switch from Manual focus to Auto Focus or vice/versa. The pin should pop-up and hold the position chosen. These lenses are very old (Old but great) so it might require a bit of a jiggle to get the pin to pop-up. If that is not the case there might be a minor fault.

Since when is a lens a "SHE"? Why not call it "IT" and everybody's happy!
Thanks for the info. I've got the nikon MB-1 (attached to a MD-1) I can open the double doors okay but can't seem to get the AA battery holders out. Can you advise please? Best wishes to you 😊
Assuming the AA battery holder is the MN-1 replacement... I don't try to pull the battery-holder straight out, instead I pull it forward or use something slim to get behind it. I hope this helps.
Awesome. I love the passion. Just starting out in photography, and I'm excited to learn as I go. I found this very helpful. Great job.
Glad it was helpful!
what would happen if an ND filter is placed on it?
ND neutral density filter depending on the intensity could be very interesting depending on what you want from your picture. I associate UV filters with reducing haze, CPL filters for blocking reflective light but being creative and having a variety of filters can make the difference. Nothing wrong with having more when it comes to you creativity.
Can i use this on a DX camera?
Yes. This is a great lens on a Nikon DX camera. You will only notice a difference if you have an FX camera to compare with... On an FX camera the image is wider because the FX frame/sensor is bigger than a DX frame/sensor. Thats it.
I own all of those
Love the Miles and Coltrane
The best.
How about us real photographers, meaning those of us who shoot film? After 52 years of shooting mostly weddings, landscapes and portraits I was asked to shoot a band under stage lighting and the only lens I had that could do the job was my D 50mm/1.8 lens using Kodak Portra 800 color film. Great results but 50mm limits what you can do. No close ups of the drummer, and limited ability to shoot across the stage. I'm generally shooting with a Nikon N90s, or my N80 when I need something lighter to hold. The Nikon N90 came out in 1992 and the N90s with spot metering came out in 1994. The 35-70 f/2.8 D lens came out in 1992 with the intent of it being paired with the N90/N90s (and I use the SB-26 when I'm NOT doing concerts). I'm always going to be shooting at ISO 800 when doing color prints, and I use aperture priority at f/2 or slightly higher because I want my shutter speed to be 1/60th to show motion. I'm still waiting for my "new" lens, and I shouldn't have to touch the eV when shooting in spot metering at 800 ISO. By the way one should NEVER be scanning negatives. It is a terrible practice that costs you resolution, and you risk some moron doing post production you didn't ask for, and don't do yourself. The only "post production an honest, real, photographer does is cropping. The only place I've been able to find that does optical prints is Blue Moon Camera and Machine in Portland Oregon. A good 35mm camera using 100 ISO film can give you a higher resolution than a $6000 36 MP DSLR. Learning to be a real photographer (as opposed to a computerized picture taking machine any monkey could do will save you a huge pile of money, but you must have skills that most picture takers don't have. The only situation where a DSLR might be superior to a film camera is sporting events shot at night under stadium lights where you might need 6400 ISO to get the shutter speeds you need, and you can't push any of the two 3200 ISO films because their nominal ISO's are only really 800 or 1000 ISO, and they are only available in Black and White. I know that there are very few real photographers today, but when reviewing a lens that has been around in some form or another since the late 1980's it would be nice if you could provide some information for real photographers. If you are shooting concerts with a DSLR your pictures are ugly pictures of frozen statues. It is the grain and slower shutter speeds that make the photographs shot in the 70's and 80's vastly superior to what they are shooting today. First computers ruined music, and now they are ruining concert photography. Now you can go see a talentless individual using autotune, pitch correction, and backing tracks having ugly pictures taken of them my talentless picture takers. We used to have musicians and photographers. Talent has been replaced with computers.
That was an interesting read Edward. When it comes to Sports, the DSLR camera in my opinion is the clear winner. However, Film photography is a "True Art" when you can show your work. Why do I say this, because it requires more than just an understanding of the technology. It requires the photographer to exam his/hers skills and limitations. The photographer must focus on creating the imagination not just an image. That smokey, blurred but focused, lively action of the day... You can feel the day, not just see the day. I don't see artist today, I see satisfaction... This is what the masses want. So... Yes, you are right. I don't do enough video's for the dedicated professional film photographers... I'm too busy having fun. I mostly focused on getting the next generation into picking up the skill and taking it to the next level. I hope you understand. best, Nes.
I'm currently running a roll of Ektar 100 through my N6006 with a 28-105D lens on it. Lots of fun! I usually shoot with more manual cameras -F, FM, FE, FA, etc, but every now and then it's nice to use an auto focus, auto wind body. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for explaining the difference between the ED and AF-s lenses, I was nearly about to buy one for Nikon Z body, which has not a motor.
just heard about Alexia Lopez's discovery in this video ruclips.net/video/IkQNMYQ8EqY/видео.htmlsi=dBl-5hxYfS8FsFr-
Is the d5300 compatible with the 70-300?
Not really. The AF-D 70-300mm requires the camera to have a built-in-motor. Manually it will work but with no auto focus. You will need the AF-S 70-300mm G not D.
@@nessetainment great knowledge thanks!
Recently picked up a Nikon d2a for a cheap photo camera. Do you have any recommendations for someone that's new to using the camera.
The camera I purchased also has that issue with it acting up on the first shot.
I personally have no issues with the D2H having an Err code (error) on the 1st shot when the camera is first turned on... It is a well known issue/problem which Nikon should've addressed years ago. To repair the problem is a bit expensive but worth it maybe in the years to come as it is becoming a very rare collectors item. The D2Hs as well... but the D2Hs doesn't have this problem as such.
Nikon D2H outdoors daylight works great with a good lens... Indoors, I would have a decent Nikon Speedlight/flash. ie. SB-28, SB-80DX, SB-600, SB-800.
@@nessetainment Yea, I'm planning on using the Nikon d2h for a little and if I really like it I might snag a d2x for the upgraded camera quality.
@@nessetainment Thanks for the help man, Ill look into getting that. I currently am waiting on Nikon AF / NIKKOR 70-210 F/4-5.6 Zoom lens that I ordered for 30 bucks off of ebay.
Will this autofocus with a d3200
Yes, AF-S G lens will work on a D3200... If your camera is in autofocus mode.
I use lithium ion batteries in my D1H, it's an easy and cheap conversion.
But it can still work on a Nikon Zf camera, for example, but will have to manually focus, is that correct? I am not sure what kind of experience that's going to be..
i'm really glad you pointed out the d100 and d80, they're the only dslrs that i own. Once i feel like i have a really good idea of how photography works i'd like to start using my film camera!
That is a very good start. The D100 is the closest approximation to a film camera I can find but the D80 is a little beauty... Without the Err problem. I like the D200 as well because it has the non-CPU built in the system to use old Nikkor Ai/AiS lenses.
Beauty and brains.
does D3400 compatible w this lens?
No. The D3400 has no built-in-motor to drive the Auto focus but you can use it in Manual mode with no AF... Self focusing.
Is this lens compatible to D7000?
Yes. This lens is an AF-S G Lens so it should work on all Nikon F-mount DSLR cameras.
in german dub they say tiger
I did not know that... It's funny cause the Spanish accent can throw some folks off when speaking English. It's definitely a Digger... not a tigger or tiger.
@@nessetainment I would not expect any non german speaking person to know that. I know this movie since it aired like 30 years ago. But only since 3 years or so i know that they say digger in the neglish version instead of tiger. The word of tiger would for sure more have fitted Ian malcom, or Robert Muldon.
Some people are the job. Meaning: He would rather spend his life digging for new fossils then to waste his time trying to convince folks the moral implication of creating a theme park full of dinosaurs. He is a digger, like I am a shooter... Whether I use a Nikon F1 to D5 or A R 1 5. It's who I am. I love the action.... I'm just a lot more mellow at my age :)
I like how the guy is having a casual talk. Great lens, cool guy.
CRC on a MIRROR lens?
Not everything I do is done with reading about how something is made or works... Sometimes I take a quick guess as to what it might be. If I took the time to remember every single definition to the subject I would spend less time doing what I want to do. So honestly, do you want to know more about CRC lenses then I will tell you to go elsewhere because honestly... I care little about the technical terms and more about what you can I actually do with equipment. I am trying to improve my videos to make everyone happy without being paid for it but I keep these old video to show I am human being.
Love old DSLRs and I have a bunch of
I had to repair my lens first because it was decentered but now it works fine. Very sharp on my D850. It underexposes a bit so I use +0.7 exposure compensation.
You'll be surprise how many folks would struggle with that... the +/- button is there for people to use but some haven't a clue. So thank you.
@@nessetainment try discussing with people about fullframe vs apsc with respect to focal length, field of view etc...

Jim Al-Khalili has always been quick off the mark. Brilliant person.
A very talented lady cosmologist and violinist.
"After the big bang...". A big bang is the sound of HUGE assumptions based on more assumptions that all need redressed. He's not responsible for it, so he just repeats it.
There’s f numbers where you connect the lens to the camera. What do you set them on. I have that lens on order. Thanks ❤❤❤
You should set the lens to the largest F-number (smallest aperture)... I think this is f/32 to stop it all the way down on this lens... Use your camera settings to adjust the aperture settings on the lens to how you would like the photograph to appear... ie "DoF" Depth of field. I hope this helps... If that's what you were asking.
It's a beautiful thing to take moon shots during the day. I walked into a hotel after just arriving and seeing g the moon. I showed the receptionist the photo of the moon and they couldn't believe that camera can take such a photo without a telescope and processing. Nice message by the way.
The launch of hundred of satellites in strings without consideration to light pollution has ruined the night sky. At this is said to be corrected now with a special paint. But it doesn't undo the damage and still ruins astro images.
I love the bark on the nest box. Early morning nest box audio recordings are good ways of avoiding neighbourhood sounds. But Adobe and Davinci Resolve both have good noise reduction and of course, there are audio plugins that do the job. Davinci Resolve noise reduction is free though. I like to clean up the audio a little but not so much that it is so obvious. The audio you have is fit for purpose, especially when demonstrating lens noise. I came here because of Alexia's astro-physics discovery. Nice to hear her violin. I thought I would check out your lens videos in particular for astro-photography. I have Nikon gear but also a Canon astro modified camera. I normally adapt Nikon lenses, as I had already parted with my Canon lenses. Interesting channel.
Thank you for your view. I love my nest box to, it was hand crafted to raise money for RSPB. I'm always looking to improve my system when it comes to noise... Noisy neighbours, dogs can be the worst when owner doesn't take responsibility but it's not too bad. Before Alexia took an interest in my interest we worked on her becoming a Great Violinist... She reached Grade 8 in both Practical & theoretical at age 15 and then took up Physics.
@@nessetainment Very much of interest. My daughter took up violin at 12, quickly headed for front desk violins, began teaching, went to Uni - gave up violin and is now a mother at 40. I'm hoping she returns to violin. Music can be good for mental health - whether you play or listen. I can't seem to locate your shop/outlet.
I don't have a shop, I have a few violins, lots of Nikon. There is nothing wrong with picking up the violin and learning to play again but I would try to find an orchestra no matter how small to join. Just a thought, a mother at any age needs a break.. Whilst listening to classic music soothes the mind & soul and solitude is often welcomed.
@@nessetainment Spot on. She loves the orchestra and that's where the motivation comes. Thanks for the extra info. 👍
Do you have experience with the rest of the Mirror Lens lineup? Rubinar and Maksutov etc? Are there any that stick out to you as sharper or more "fun" than others?
Yes. I have experience with a few Telescopes. The one that sticks out with me was my Orion SX 200mm F/8 (Orion Optics U.K.) 1/10 wave. This was many years ago. Quite expensive upgrading but when I needed to find something... It was awesome. My daughter and I used to scan the skies looking for celestial objects. I have a Nikon ED Field Scope 82mm very portable and with the right eyepieces will blow your mind for such a small scope. I really would love to test out more scopes... I just can't get the equipment I used to and money is a bit tight... But I am trying to get my RA in control and maybe back in the game.
Stunningly awesome.
She's a good egg. She teaches violin whilst working on her PhD.
¿ Dónde nació Alexia López?
Alexia nació en Inglaterra. Madre Inglesa y Padre Puertorriqueño
Great video. Beginner photographs can learn a lot from your experience. Other people will not explain everything to you about the camera and the camera lens. Thanks ❤❤❤
Maybe it's taken a year to verify or she just got a PR team
Alexia made her first discovery "The Giant Arc" whilst working on her Master Degree under the Guidance of Professor Roger Clowes... There is a Publish copy of her work. A Big Ring on the Sky is her 2nd discovery 2023. She doesn't have a PR team that I know of. It might be nice break for her if she did.
So it looks like this woman just made another incredible discovery! This deserves more views, and I’m guessing we’re going to hear her name quite a bit in cosmological physics circles. The Arc and now the Big Ring?!! Nicely done
We will certainly!
I found one on Marketplace. Lady is askin $400, gonna try to get her to come down to $350
If the electronics & mechanics/zoom is working smoothly. The glass clean & clear then it will be a very good price.
Question for you… I’ve got a Tamron 18-400 on my Nikon which has been a great all-round lens. How would the Nikkor 80-400 compare? Can I expect a sharper image quality with the Nikkor lens?
I've tested the 80-400mm AF-S which is slightly sharper than the AF-D as well as faster but the Tamron 18-400... I can't say because I haven't tested it against this lens. Sometimes Tamron surprises me... But I usually stick with the fastest focal ratio and shortest zoom rather than a long range zoom (TBH)... I feel long range is more for the convenience.
Jacob is smiling while looking at the F2 photomic!😂 health and good luck for him!
Jacob is now 3yrs old... He loves his Pop-pops camera but now he's into dinosaurs & animals... So I put them in the cabinet, hiding behind cameras to have him find them.
I have the MD-12 motor drive on mine. It has a more rounded hand grip and feels more comfortable to me. The FA is an excellent camera. Great review.
I've always had an MD-15 on the FA and the MD-12 on the FM or FE... I've popped it on just to have a look... Not bad. Thank you for sharing.
Terrific video
Thank you. :)
Well, I searched all afternoon after buying a second hand version of this lens, and thought no! the AF doesn't work! This video solved my issue. I "warmed" up all the rings and it started working. Now, very quick. Thank you!
That's brilliant! It worked for me as well... It is not an answer to the problem but then we don't have a true understanding of Quantum Mechanics... It still doesn't stop us making quantum applications, such as Computing & Lasers. In cases like these most people just want a solution and to leave the "understandings of the answer" to philosophers :)
Can you use both batteries at the same time?
Yes. Both batteries are used simultaneously to give it longer life... The use of a EN-EL4a gives it extra power.
Volume is so low I can't hear anything!
I'm just on it right now... I can hear the music as well as myself, with no issues.. I know the volume for the commercial I didn't put on purposely is louder but once I come-on, I don't hear a problem. Very sorry it is too low for you.
Does it work on a Nikon d3500
I am afraid not... The Nikon D3500 camera does not come with a built-in-motor to drive the gear inside the Nikkor AF-D lens.
Use a shutter remote / delayed shutter to prevent vibrations
