So how about I try to do it, but with a catch: a death orb will be following me around the whole world. Wherever I go, the death orb goes. Early game after I get a decent amount of wood, I like to find a water source, and dig a pit for it to waterfall into. I then dig straight down next to it, digging its pit first and then digging the block underneath me second. With a water stream, you can quickly return to the surface to avoid dangers. And you're also protected from lava.
