    Great video! I have had people say they wish they could be like me when it comes to diet and exercise. I understand that they mean well, but it is very hurtful and it also makes me feel guilty and ashamed and like I am a fraud because if they knew that I had this eating disorder they would not like me or want to be around me. Living with an eating disorder is awful and totally consuming, and they don't get that. All they see is a thin body that they admire. Thank you, Malin, for bringing awareness about eating disorders and for all of the help and support you give to us who struggle! You are a wonderful example and an inspiration for us all! Your book is amazing! It is a very helpful guide. Thank you! I'm so sorry for the loss of your Grandfather. Love and hugs and prayers for comfort for you and your family. 😊 💕

    I can vouch for what you've said. I was 17 when I was diagnosed (after a decade of either being restricted, or restricting/using laxatives). I'm 60, and still not OK (in active outpatient treatment for over 2 yrs again). All it did was make every calorie stick to my body because of constant 'famine' mode. I look like I need to lose a ton, and I eat little enough that my nursing case manager asked how I'm surviving. THE biggest regret of my life was not listening to people tell me at 17 that what I was doing was going to damage me. My body is broken, and everything wrong with it aside from post-traumatic seizure disorder is because of eating disorders (directly or indirectly). NOTHING is worth that.

    Distraction is what my therapist uses when she has talked me through first consuming anything after completely stopping any calorie intake a couple of years ago. She talked me through kefir at one airport, then checked in at her connecting flight airport, and again when she got home. It took about 30 min to get through 8 oz of kefir, but it was a start. Distraction is a key for many to take the power out of the food. This is kind of unrelated, but do you have some tips about getting through feeling sick, and still getting some food in? It's so easy to just not eat when feeling lousy, and that so quickly goes south when it starts feeling better not to eat.

  • @tatteredquilt

    I'm post-menopausal, but have noticed (even though never underweight) that I've had some hot flashes that I didn't have when I went through menopause. I also have dysautonomia (that first started with the relapse in the mid-90s), so sometimes it's hard to know what causes what- but these 'hot flashes' are different than the 'usual' dysautonomia heat intolerance. I have osteopenia from decades of restricted eating. I can't overstate how important it is to get a hold of recovery as soon as possible. So much of my life has been dictated by consequences of a lifetime of restricting- whether initially imposed by my parents, or when I 'took over' in my teens. I've been in active treatment for 2 years, and am still not "Okay'd" for doing more activity than just doing basic daily chores (trash, laundry, etc). Even ankle and wrist weights are a no-go for now.

    I'm lucky I don't like the taste of any booze (though I wish I liked wine). After stupid drinking after moving away from home, I found it was overrated. Women metabolize booze differently than men (I was a detox RN for a few years). It takes less quantity and less time for addiction to kick in. I had to leave my freshman year of college early in the second semester to be hospitalized for anorexia. The next fall, I returned earlier than most (about 2 weeks before classes started) because of my mom's cancer radiation schedule , and felt intense pressure to be "normal" (I was far from it, and was looking forward to nobody knowing if/when/what I ate). I started going to bars and frat parties almost nightly (one or the other). By the end of the second week of actual classes, I was exhausted and just wanted to sleep.... I took a bunch of prescription sleeping pills and nearly a bottle of antidepressants that landed me in a coma for 3 days. I had no recollection of wanting to die- just sleep, but I'd been drinking, and wasn't thinking. You are so right. I'm 60, and wish SO much that I had the chance to get help for REAL from someone who knows eating disorders inside and out (internationally known). I knew when I started down this road again 3 years ago that I had one shot at it at this point. If I'd only listened when I was 18, I could have had a life without multiple nutritionally related chronic diseases. I not only ruined my body, my life stopped.

    Hey Malin! I love this topic. You said it perfectly. I've been back in full recovery for about 3 or more months now ,I can't quite rememeber , but ever since I stumbled across your channel. I finally feel like the extreme hunger has quited down. But I do get some days where food is all I can think about. Damn , I wish I recovered 10 years back where food is affordable. I feel like I would love to eat more , but Really can't afford it so much..or like different types of food ...Food prices are soooo ridiculous these days. But that's life heeeey. I was wondering , a random question for ya .... For the first few months in recovery , can you remember your stomach feeling nautious or extreme ravenous to the point of discomfort ? I've been experiencing that first thing in the morning for an hour or so...Alrighty! Have a stunning day , Friend ! <3

    • @HealwithMalin
      @HealwithMalin 19 дней назад

      I am sooo proud of you for choosing recovery again!! And I can relate, food prices are definitely a hard topic, especially when it comes to Extreme hunger! I always tried to buy reduced items, bargains, etc, but it’s still not easy! As to your question: Oh god, YES! Back when I had an eating disorder I struggled with gastritis all the time, so my stomach was already sensitive. Starting to eat the things I didn’t allow myself in so long caused a lot of discomfort in the beginning. If we avoid certain foods, our bodies don’t produce the needed enzymes anymore, cause they are not needed. When we begin eating them again, that leads to discomfort and pain. That’s why it is so important to continue eating them, so that the body starts to produce the enzymes again. Another reason is, that our body slows down so many bodily functions, among others the digestive system. It needs a lot of energy to function properly and it can take a couple of months for it to speed up again. To me, hot water bottles, laying or sleeping (a lot), drinking tea and certain medications were helpful. The most important thing is to continue, that’s the only way your body can get better! ❤️‍🩹

      @@tanyamarie1992 yes, that can actually be a trauma response - the body keeps score and when you start to become more busy again, it will do everything to prevent you from going back to old habits.
