kindling
Inspired by a morning walk, with our little dog, around (New) St Mary's Church, Walmer, Deal, Kent, UK, collecting sticks for the fire - anticipating some lovely Sunday organ playing and hymn singing, and instead - the gentle sound of piano; simple, special, with unexpected historical resonance. This short film-poem is to do with memory, missing, particularly this time of year; hope, for (re)-kindling...

Inspired by a conversation with a dog walker on the shingle beach at Walmer, Deal, Kent, UK while photographing ‘remains’, as old fishing plots are being cleared of equipment and craft; gathered, strewn, removed. Several original pieces of music made for the film were rejected; we finally settled on a sound-work ‘rattling bones’, based on a performance by Susan Bennetta. Historically, this regi...

What does emptiness look, and sound like... The inspiration for this short poem film begins and ends with the making process and music; to do with the chord of A minor; its sense for me of melancholy, sadness, and loss. At another level, the idea that emptiness leads to growth, and clarity; to something new. In Gestalt psychology Fritz and Laura Perls describe this part of the process as the fe...

'"A ship should not ride on a single anchor or life on a single hope”. (Epictetus, ancient Greek philosopher) I have now made eighteen of these Killick sculptures, using found branches, hagstone, wire, and rope. I also mounted them on oak plinths to keep their feet dry. The inspiration for this work is research-based, and developed in the making process. For example, while working on a poem, I ...

The full poem appears, after the end credits. It is further inspired by some lines from poet Robert Bridges (poem 13, book II, shorter poems), who spent his early childhood here in Walmer, Kent.
