Remembering Dad
My love of gardening comes from both of my parents, so when my father passed away, I thought it fitting to plant a tree in my garden in memory of him. This tree is a tribute to his quiet, gentle, steadfast, and kind nature. It is also a way to honor and remember him in my garden.

How to Add Winter Interest to a Garden for All-Season Enjoyment.
Просмотров 3262 месяца назад
It is easy to focus on designing a garden for spring and summer when most people are outside to enjoy the garden. It is easy to forget about the garden in winter. After planting my flower beds I noticed that the garden lacked interest and structure during the winter. Since then, I have been working on fixing what I consider to be my biggest garden design mistake. I am adding evergreens, shrubs,...

I then realized that it was a garden designed specifically to be resistant to deer and rabbits. I made notes of the plants in this garden and how it was organized so that I could make changes to my garden to combat a problem that I am currently ex...

I am Ripping These Plants Out HD 1080p
That looks like it is going to be such a pretty tree to honor your dad. What a great idea. I should plant a tree to honor my dad too. I love that idea.
I bought the square tomatoe cages. It does help but they still outgrow them by the end of the season. They get wild! I am still looking for a better but pretty solution.
Claudia l am so proud of you for honoring your Dad in such a beautiful way. He gifted you your green thumb and love for gardening. Loosing a parent is extremely difficult experience but l love that you are allowing your love for your Dad to continue to bloom in your yard.
Great memorial for your dad. My dad and I watched birds in the yard a lot. When he died, I bought a birdbath with money friends gave me. I also got all his bird feeders, too.
That’s a beautiful way to remember your dad. And it changes the way you remember him from mostly sad to moments of joy over timw
What a beautiful way to honour your dad, and what a lovely tree! Also well done for sharing that story and having such composure and grace, I know that is not easy to share. Welcome back and Take care, excited to see what your dad has to say in spring ❤x
Thank you so much! It was difficult.
Oh my heart! Blessings to you. I can tell you this was a tremendous idea and you will treasure those dogwoods, which are going to be stunning. When my father passed, some co-workers gave me a tree to plant at the new home my husband I had just bought, and I treasure that tree 30+ years later. My father too had his flaws, but he had already proven with my nephew that he would have been an exceptional grandfather and I missed him often as our children grew. That tree was a reminder of how to do some things in life better. PS Love the hat. It is very flattering on you!
I love your story and your sentiment about your tree. They become a physical representation of our love. We are all such flawed humans and and I’m glad we have them to love in this life. Ian sorry for your loss
What a wonderful way to remember a loved one. Also, I was intrigued when you said you will remove the tree, as it looked pretty established. I didn't know you can cut so much of the root system. I will be trying this with my mulberry tree that I was scared to replant due to its size. Thank you for sharing! And I love the dogwood you puchsed, so unique.
Thank you. I hope that you will have good luck with your mulberry tree! I have done this successfully with the others and they have adjusted well. The key is to make sure they are dormant and in the fall or winter/early spring so that it has time to put down new roots
@TheOrganizedHomemaker Thank you! Yes, I am in North Florida, and the tree is currently dormant, so I plan to do this very soon.
My condolences on the loss of your dad. What a sweet way to remember him.
Thank you Wendy
Such a beautiful remembrance. So admire your “ get it done” spirit!🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
Thank you for your kind words. It has been very healing to work in the garden.
I am converting half of my front lawn to a pollinator and perennial garden in honor of my late wife. I had a half dead maple cut down to chest high and the stump hollowed out to 6 inches deep to use as a planter, and I kept sections to of the upper trunk to use as plant stands. I stopped watering my lawn and using Chem Lawn. I take out whole sections of the thinning and dying lawn, rebuild the soil (I live in Zone 5b and have clay soil) and plant. My hope is to have there sanctuary completed within the next 2 -3 years.
I am sure your wife would be very pleased with your beautiful plan. I was in Minnesota this summer and because of the cold and snow their pollinator gardens were spectacular. What plants will you be planting
@@Claudiagrowsitall Thank you. Actually, my wife didn't really want to do this with our yard but if she could see what I am doing, I know she would smile. To answer your question, I already have cosmos, black eyed Susans, lambs ear, coreopsis, a variety of sunflowers, and a host of others. I will be covering more of my cleared spaces with wildflower mix. My major species introduction will be Red Hot Pokers and one native grass. I put annuals in containers on the stump stands. I grow vegetables in grow bags and herbs in containers in my back yard. Chicago winters last until the end of April (typically). I don't plant until the end of May/ first week of June.
So sorry for your loss. I know how you feel. I lost my dad in 2022. It is hard. What a great way to honor him & feel close to him!❤🙏🏻
Thank you My condolences to you as well. Bit by bit we will make it through the loss of our dads
My sincere condolences again, Mrs Claudia. What a beautiful way to honor your father❤
Thank you very much
Welcome back Claudia! What a beautiful tribute to your dad. I very much enjoyed hearing your story and memories you shared. Perfect time to move that cherry tree too, while its dormant. You are doing great by yourself. Great work! I enjoyed your video.
Thank you for your kind words. It has a better chance of surviving that ws
What a beautiful way to honor your dad's legacy.
Thank you very much. I think we would be pleased
Wow I did not know that I think I have one on my property I'm not sure. But I love arugula.
@@peaceatferngully8369 i hope you like it. It has bitter undertones but sprinkled in a salad is good
Thank you for the tip! I guess I’m going shopping today!

🥹🙌❤️ wow the deeper I look into your channel the more blessed I am in so many ways. I've learned you two are a spiritual power couple as well as good gardening team. Your husband brings a level of perseverance and gratitude to the garden then I had not slowed down to look for in my own. I will continue in prayer and I too believe the report of the Lord for you 🙏. Thank you for the wisdom and kindness you two share with us.
@@peaceatferngully8369 thank you for following and for your comments. I’ll be posting regularly starting Monday. We believe God has been very merciful to us and has granted us the opportunity to continue to live for him. There are many miracles and blessings everywhere
Love your selections! I vote for the cherry tree next to the greenhouse😊 QUESTION.... I may have missed it if you said but I was wondering are all your trees full size or are they semi or dwarf?
@@peaceatferngully8369 some of the trees are dwarf and some full sized but will be pruned to control size
Consider raw arugula, especially with small yellow flowers, and plain nonfat Greek yogurt without the vitamin D, I'll link a reason but it might be a bit lengthy to explain pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6913170/ On top of trying as many raw things as possible, orange peels and radishes go overlooked concerning the bone matrix + raw whole food ingredients without added sugar might be the healthiest combo, mixing things is definitely worth the work though You notice who funded the study right? The people who get paid to do diabetes research over the course of many decades
Thank you for your detailed explanations! I'm going to watch this a few times. Happy Gardening 😊
Glad it was helpful!
I have an herb garden right outside our back slider, right near our wind chimes, and I like the idea of making this more purposefully even to be a sensory garden and not just an herb garden, since it is somewhere we can spend outside time.
That sounds like a great idea. What type of water feature are you thinking ot
I love my low pitched wind chimes - I have one right outside my bedroom and one outside the front living area. Such good suggestions for calming sensory things to incorporate into gardens. I love all your sitting places - I feel like I need to add more of those to my garden areas.
I love the sound it is so calming to me. I usually stop and listen. Sitting areas give you the opportunity to sit and enjoy the garden which most of us never do enough of
I am so glad that you recommended to me planting a Coral Bark Japanese Maple too because they really are so pretty in every season!
I am so glad it worked out for you. They are truly beautiful
I have never heard of service berries! I learned something new watching your video. Your choices in trees to add sound like great varieties.
I have seen them a few times and decided since they produce food we should try growing rhem
@@Claudiagrowsitall It will be interesting to find out what you think of them!
Service berry is my vote 😊 thank you for the information looking forward to seeing your orchard in bloom!
Thanks for voting! I think that’s what I’m going with too
❤Can’t wait to watch them grow into a bountiful harvest!
Thanks Shelley I am looking forward to it as well
Where did you find the Winesap Apple?
I purchased the bagged trees at Cheaha Plant Farm in Heflin Alabama
I love the selections of trees that you have chosen. I cannot wait to see the outcome of the blossoms and fruits good luck.
Thank you Debbie. That is one of my favorite things to look for also
Thank you as always for the great information Mrs. Claudia! Happy Holidays!
Thank you for your support. Love sharing
I had no idea that all stone fruit can be fine without a partner to pollinate them. ❤️
My husband taught me that a few years ago and I was amazed
Great selection of trees, and I'm happy to hear that your husband is able to get out and you two plant together looking forward to seeing your journey 😊
Thanks so much. We are So grateful for his progress that he has made. He is not what he was but so grateful he has come so far
I sure have learned the same thing, instead of just planting pretty flowers, I am now very appreciative of evergreen options that I planted and their leaf shapes. Thankfully we get a good amount of snow here and the sparkling white ground cover sure is beautiful!
It is beautiful to look at and seeing the evergreens under it is also a special treat.
My garden is mostly evergreens of various sizes, shapes and colors with a few perennials, vines and lots of trees - This makes my garden look almost the same year around......
That’s a well planned and intentioned garden. I may gravitate towards that as I age to decrease maintenance but ai live a cottage garden too much at this point
Great video, Claudia. Very informative. I love the intentional additions to your seasonal gardens.
Thank you very much. I’m looking forward to them filling in and adding the impact i hope for
I agree with you. I always went for a "natural" garden look, meaning I didn't want a formal look. Then, I had a light bulb moment where I now understand how a round, or square formed shrub thrown in here and there, enhances my natural garden, so I am seeking out some of those shapes. It's so much more interesting and everything stands out because you're eye is drawn everywhere.
The occasional change in shape gives your eyes places to land in the garden. The hats your favorite evergreen
@@Claudiagrowsitall I have just latched on to conifers of all types this year. I have very little sun space, though, so I have to be careful with what I choose.
Thank for the information loved it! It helped me think about structure in the garden as well s color 😊
You are so welcome!
Great video. What do you use to mulch your garden?
I use wood chips and leaves as mulch
Love your gardening videos!! I'm in Michigan (I believe you said you used to live here??). Personally, even my mistakes are a joyful learning experience. 😊 Oh, I don't think I've ever seen a weeping Cedar! Your garden is beautiful. Thank you for sharing! (And I think your husband is in touch with the beautiful energy God's creation gives us). Best wishes from Michigan!
Thank you Judy for being here. Yes i lived in southwest Michigan for 11.5 years. I also agree with you about learning from your mistakes
I love this advice! I need to add some evergreens to my garden. 😊
Those boxwoods and spiral topiaries look AMAZING! Wow!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you. I have been enjoying the impact they make
I wish you would post more videos.. I started watching your video doing spring season. At that time, I didn't know what a cottage garden was. You inspired me to create my own very small butterfly cottage garden. Thanks for sharing your content.
Thank you for being here and watching. I am working on getting back into a routine.
Thanks for your video. Your tree doesn't have thorns like mine, so I'm wondering if you know the type of tree you have?
Mi e is a Persian lime tree
What a great idea yes, all the things that we should do but reminding us that we should do it because we forget. Thank you! HAPPY PLANTING
You are welcome!
You are the cutest! Love the content and your personality. ❤️
@@NorisHouse thank you very much
Great tour Claudia. I use many of those plants mentioned. They bring so much insect activity to the garden. Luckily I have only dealt with deer once and I literally chased them out of the garden. I must have made such a crazy fuss that they have since not returned. I do however get plenty vole and other burrowing creatures.
Thank you. They do bring loads of pollinators and help foster a healthy ecosystem
Quick and to the point! Great info!
Glad you liked it!!
Claudia this garden is stunning, and you are so right about these plants. The frangrance and texture tip I find to be the most effective with plants in my own garden with ton of deer. And this year, lots of bunnies too 😞 I added Joe Pye Weed last year and quickly fell in love with it! 💚
Hey Steph thanks for watching. The deer aren’t as much of an issue for me but the rabbit Oye. I found a variegated Joe-pye weed and added it to the garden
The rabbits were awful in my garden this year. However, I’ve noticed the population has decreased significantly. I think the owls and hawks have been busy. This was a great tour with the focus on decreasing rabbit and deer pressure. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Anne. They have been bad this year as well the family of hawks I’m my area have moved in i think
