While I was researching the story, I couldn't help but wonder why a good lawyer didn't step forward to argue for an annulment. They had clearly lied about their ages on the marriage license, so that could have been used as a starting point in the argument to do so.

You are very welcome. The book that I mentioned in the story is titled "True Life Story of Will Purvis." It was written by Frances Williams Griffiths back in 1935. It's been close to twenty years since I first researched it, but I think I may have a photocopy of it in my files. If you'd like a copy, I can search to see if I still have it. If I do, I can scan it and send you a pdf. If so, just send me an email at steve@uselessinformation.org and I'll check to see if I can find it. I seem to recall that it is a fairly short book.

I never thought I'd be so emotionally invested in a strangers retirement celebration, It's heart-warming to know you represented the good traits I've seen in all my favorite teachers, the ones that captivated and motivated my drive for knowledge in a constructive manner, I've had a few not too good teachers to contrast them with, it's night and day. And also, you're technically a digital pioneer, that's cool as heck dude! You've done so much for a lot of people, including me, I'm a sucker for random obscure facts about the early 20th century, and researching for hours about quite literally anything I find mildly interesting, I work night shifts and over the last 3 months you've been talking about some of the most intriguing and obscure facts and stories I've ever been exposed to, I see this podcast as incredibly important work as it keeps these stories alive. Being from NY myself (Oswego) the Ida Woods situation still blows my mind, as well as the thought of a Sea lion making it's way across Lake Ontario, I guess I just like those ones cuz the NY stories hit close to home (literally). That and 100 other outrageous tidbits, but I digress, I just want to thank you for highlighting and archiving these incredible events and situations that would've remained hidden in over a century worth's of daily news coverage. I wish you a happy and peaceful retirement, and I'm hoping the podcast gets up there with some of the biggest in the world, it deserves it 100% in my opinion, I hope this got across how much I appreciate your work and I'm sorry if an email was preferred for this sort of message, I barely know how to write one A tidbit about me: I was 3 when you recorded your first podcast, now I'm 20 and fully invested in it :)

I've been retired from teaching for about 3-1/2 years now. I don't think about the job much anymore, but I do miss the daily interaction with my students. I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying the podcast. I never expected to still be recording it all these years later. Another good Western NY story suggestion is podcast #92 - A Dog Day in Court, which took place in Brockport. Thanks for all of the kind words and for taking the time to write to let me know. It is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on a very long and very fruitful career sir. You can see from my name if you have that good of a memory I was never your student. I'm actually a listener of your podcast and thoroughly enjoy every single solitary episode of it and it always puts a smile on my face when I see there's a new episode. not knowing you personally I can't say for sure but you definitely sound like the teachers that I actually liked in school And my 22-year-old daughter is going to school to be a teacher and I hope that she is as good of a teacher as I am expecting that I am guessing you are. Good luck in your future endeavor sir And watch your fingers when you're driving nails

Thanks for the kind words. Teaching is a learned skill. I definitely got better and better as the years went on. Based on what I have seen over the years, the first three years are incredibly difficult, but it gets much easier once everything falls into place. Your daughter will probably have a similar experience and I wish her the best of luck. There is a lot to like and dislike about the profession, but connecting with the students is what makes it all seem worth it.

Thanks! I didn't do that demo for the video because they told us just a few days before I filmed this that they were shutting the building down for construction. I raced in with little preparation, so I didn't have any pickles. That is one of my favorite demos, but it smells awful!

Thanks! That room was designated as the Physics room when it was built, so it was best suited for the labs. For my first three years, I taught in what is now Mrs. Tomaso's art room. Hope that you are doing well.
