September marked the return of the much anticipated 'Forgotten Engines' gala at the Vale of Rheidol railway, the last one being in 2015. This years event presented the opportunity to see all three rheidol tank locomotives No.7, No.8 and No.1213 (No.9) in steam together for the first time since the mid 1980s as well as three other locomotives hidden away for years to discover in the workshops at...

I was lucky enough to get to see all three tours in various locations, the Sunset Steam Express with 61306, The Bournemouth Belle with 35018 and The End of Southern Steam also with 35018 (Which was only down to the tour being behind time...

This service runs the whole of the Ffestiniog line and then the whole of the Welsh Highland line, starting and ending at Porthmadog. It has been a success over the last few years! This year double Garratts were on the Welsh Highland section but unfortunately due to a broken spring the first ...

Looking good!
Chars!
Excellent video footage from both locations. 👍👍
Cheers Allan!
A lovely locomotive which deserves the comprehensive overhaul she requires. I am not sure if stablemate 53809 is in ticket on the North Norfolk Railway, or if she is steamed, I hope to see her next year.
Yes, 53809 is operational. Would love to see it in steam one day but quite a trek for me!
What fuel do these little steam locomotives use?
Just coal & water!
Very nice and very good video. Tom from Hungary.
Simply delightful!
Forgive my ignorance but what causes poor priming?
Priming can be caused two ways. The first is to have too much water in your boiler. This is a mistake by the fireman. The water is then picked up and carried along with steam into the valves and cylinders. This washes oil out of the cylinders and valves and can cause a lot of wear. In the worst case scenario, the cylinders will hydraulic. This can blow out the cylinder ends, bend piston rods and or smash the cylinder castings. Not good. The other way is to have dirty water in the boiler. As a boiler is in service, any impurities in the water get left behind, just like in your kettle. Boilers are washed out at regular intervals where the water is dropped out of the boiler and a high pressure hose is used to wash the muck out. If you fall behind with this, the water gets soupy and a scum sits on top of the water and this can also be picked up and washed through the cylinders as well. Last week I was driving a loco which needed a washout. Although the water was nowhere near a high level, big fluffy “clouds” of steam would come out of the funnel. The chuff of the loco changed to a “woof” and was very noticeable. The procedure then is to close the throttle and open the drain cocks on the cylinders and let the loco settle down again. I hope this helps. ruclips.net/video/tVh0lpmgJ3Q/видео.html This is a video from the Silverton Railroad. Have a look at the 35:18 mark. This is what can happen when you hydraulic a cylinder.
@@bigkiwimike ….Thank you.
@@bigkiwimike I would have thought that if the boiler was overfull excess could be released via the blowdown valve, or if all else failed, turning on an injector WITHOUT turning on the water supply valve. Which would have made that condition correctable. Although bad water/dirty boiler could not be corrected so easily.
@@smitajky You are right about using the blowdown to lower the water but with most locos you have to stop first to operate it. I’m not familiar with the other method you have suggested. That idea wouldn’t work on New Zealand locos with Sellars injectors.
Super video clip of the A4.
Awesome !!
my lordz !
Excellent video😃⤴️⤴️Fantastic steam train and beautiful night view😉👍️✨
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Well, "storms" was clickbait, admit it.
eh? Have you got the audio muted
Nah its not quite a storm. More of a power.
The thing is usually when people say storms it means speed and power, this is just power. Still good video tho.
@@flamedude_1111 not true, definition for storm means move angrily or forcefully
@@AaronThompson I didn't know. My point still stands though
Loved that shot towards the end showing the sinuous track.
Thanks John!
Wasn't that a great weekend; I was there too and I've even got a couple of walk-on parts in your video! I went there again this year to sample Garratt haulage; the first two instalments of my video footage are now on my RUclips channel, with more to be added as time permits.
Brings back memories. 😊 I was there too - and I've even got a walk on part in your video!
Cheers Ron, great memories from a great event!
@@AaronThompson I was there again this summer to sample Garratt haulage. The first part of my video is on RUclips, with the remainder to follow as time permits...
As was I Ron! Had to get down there after a good few years break to sample the Garratt, great whistle on that thing. I shall check out your videos!
@@AaronThompson Hope you like what you see!
Excellent Video Aaron, very well edited too...Thanks for sharing
Thanks Stevie!
Che scartamento 600 mm.
What a lovely video
When 1213 left pontarfynach did she whistle the imperial march?
I remember them from a holiday in Wales as a young person. The locos were in BR livery and the railway workers let tourists, train spotters wander around the yard. Old school public knew about H&S we didn’t need rules for it in the 60s it was common sense. The only place I got grief on doing loco sheds was Yorkshire.
There is truth in what you say. I found signallers would welcome me to their signal box and goods guards to their brake vans (caboose in American terminology)
I like those narrow gauge engines! They’re just greatly designed and I like that they’re so big!
Where is this?
As the title states, the Moors Valley Railway
@@AaronThompson yes. Moors valley county park.
Very intresting
One off ride on the on the Welshpool and Llanfair in the early-mid 1980's during my Derwen years
Lovely place, Its certainly worth another visit!
Surely another visit is due?
Reminds me a lot of our local narrow gauge (2'6") Puffing Billy here in Vic Australia, environment similar and locos sound a fair bit alike!
Have heard of the the Puffing Billy, its one thats on the list for the future! If you ever come for a visit to the UK its very much worth the visit!
@@AaronThompson Puffing billy is a fantsic railway it's worth the visit
If someone showed me the road leading to that level crossing on a model, I’d think it was badly done. You just don’t get roads that steep and gradient changes that sharp in real life!
Hello, Aaron Thompson - my name is Nic Greene and I'm a Volunteer at the Watercress Line. We're making a short promo video for this years Christmas Leave and wonder if we could use a few short clips from your excellent video. Attribution would of course be given. Many thanks Nic Greene - geralldus on RUclips
Nice video mate. But this sad day when it was Black Five was it last day. Because I went on Sunday just to know that loco.
Thanks Joseph, was very sad indeed.
Fantastic video - really enjoyed. I am close to SKLR and often see Superb on the industrial route from Sittingbourne viaduct to Kemsley Down.
Thanks Samantha, glad you enjoyed. Definitely want to visit the SKLR one day, sounds like a very interesting little railway!
Excellent video Aaron :)
Thanks Michael :)
Very great video Aaron, thumbs up :)
Thanks Simon!
Can anyone tell me why this engine is leaving What is going to happen to it
Hello yes, the engine is not leaving the railway but its boiler ticket has run out meaning it needs a full overhaul. Currently the railway has probably about six other locos being overhauled before this one because its at the back of the overhaul queue so it may be many years until she runs again!
Aaron Thompson ok thanks for telling me I was getting worried it said THE END on the boiler
The end.... for now!
It’s sad when a boiler ticket runs out. It takes years till they are back. And it’s always the engines I love that are out of service too.
Certainly is sad. This one could be quite a while too as there is a big queue infront of her!
Is she the only black 5 on the mid hants?
Yes she is the only black 5 currently! Some have visited over the years too
Aaron Thompson but is it me or are there a lot of locos needing to be overhauled and are out of service? Especially western locos.
There certainly are!
Who said only GWR locks could perform quick departures??
Whoever did was wrong thats for sure!
Wow that 10 years has flown by i can still remember when the watercress first acquired 45379 from avon valley. Going to have a long rest for now with the size of the overhaul queue at ropley at the moment
For sure, there is a long list before her unfortunately. Her time will come though!
Excellent video to say goodbye for 45379 in action mate 😉👍 The Mid Hants won't be the same without this amazing and incredible Black Five Class on the final weekend in operation service which will be very sad to miss 🙁☹️😭
Thanks! It's a shame to see her go, such a lovely engine, but she'll be back some day!
Really great video Aaron, thumbs up :)
Thanks a lot Simon! Was a great event!
Great video. Nice to see superb getting a good run and a chance to stretch its legs. Always liked the look of the welshpool and llanfair one i think i need to get around to visiting
Thanks! Its probably the most work Superb has done in a while! Welshpool & Llanfair is definitely worth a visit, next years gala maybe? ;)
considering that they are some of the most reliable locos in preservation, this is a very rare occurrence.
Nice video Aaron, thumbs up + sub. Greetings from Denmark :)
Thanks a lot Simon! I see you have videos of the railways in Denmark so have subscribed back, always interesting to see railways in different countries!
Thanks Aaron :)
Excellent video, Linda and Blanche put on a cracking show for the passengers and yourself. I look forward to Part 2! Regards, Michael
Thank you Michael! They sounded lovely together! Hopefully will have part 2 up next week! -Aaron
Some nice shots of the black five.
Thank you, was nice to get a high speed shot as well as a departing shot!

Excellent video, some nice noises from the A3 :)
Thank you Michael! Although its a softer beat it can certainly make a racket if it wants to!
Excellent short clip - havent used that shot before (dont know how you get there)... nice to see TYB from a different angle!
Thank you! From the station you work into the carpack and down into the woods, there is a whole walk and path system I think through the woods towards ffest. Then you climb up the bank just outside the station area where the track is clearly visible on the left! This may help you for any future locations! caemawr.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/llyn-mair-walk.jpg
The weather makes it particularly atmospheric doesn't it. Some rather theatrical departures from Llangollen, weren't there.
The normal welsh atmosphere, rain! They certainly put on a show departing Llangollen!
Excellent film, Aaron! Regards, Michael
RailAdvent Thanks a lot Michael! The snowdonian video should hopefully be up tomorrow! May need to split it up into parts though due to length!
Great video. I do like the look of statfold barn just narrow gauge heaven and its pretty much access all areas with regards to photography and filming. Really want to get up there but the events always fall on the wrong dates for me.
Thanks! It certainly is narrow gauge heaven, with steep gradients and a large collection of locomotives well worth the visit! Hopefully you'll get a chance this year!
