Welcome to my little shop in southern New Hampshire and the projects I'm working on related to model steam engines, tool upgrades, and equipment reviews.
I worked 30+ years as an engineer - design, product & process engineering, maintenance as well as stints in quality and safety. During those years I was blessed to be involved in a wide variety of industries - aircraft, paper, steel & aluminum, petroleum, plastic and printing.
Now I'm retired and have time and (some) money to pursue the thing I always wanted to do; build working model steam engines from scratch. I have a lot of knowledge in design and blueprints and tolerances. The challenge is to actually do it myself ... and on equipment that can't exactly hold the kind of tolerances I used to work with (i.e. my 7"x14" Chinese lathe). It's a challenge I enjoy and a journey worth taking. Hopefully my mix of OLd ENgineer & NEw MAChinist will bring something useful to those watching. Regards and best wishes - OLEN NEMAC

South Bend 9" Lathe - DRO Upgrade! Part 2 Details, Details, Details
I published a video recently showing the DRO design and installation on my SB 9" lathe using iGaging DROs purchased from Amazon. While I shared a lot of info in the first video, I decided more is better for anyone serious about doing this for their lathe.
What happened is that I photographed and made videos of the final tear down for installing a new cross slide nut as well as painting the pieces that I fabricated. I did this for my own use because I afraid I might forget how it all went together. And then I thought, why not share this stuff? It's probably going to be boring for the casual viewer just looking for entertainment BUT for anyone wanting to figure out what all I did, here you g...

I decided to make a new carriage clamp for my lathe. I had bought one from LMS but wasn't happy with it because it mounted on the spindle side of the carriage. I'm much happier with this one!

Some challenges I encountered with my new mill and what I did to get everything working smoothly. Addendum - I shared this with the good people at LMS and they relayed it to Sieg. Today I received an email acknowledging what I found and what the people at the factory are going to do to prevent it in future machines. I'm impressed!

This is a great addition to your last video, thanks for the detailed pics and info, I see you haven't fitted a compound slide, did you modify the set up? On my Boxford I have fitted a solid toolpost, but can switch back to the compound for cutting tapers, cheers, Dave
This is great, so neat and directly in line with the cross slide lead screw, so the ideal position, I have a Boxford lathe which is a direct clone of the 9 inch South Bend, I'm seriously thinking about doing this mod to mine too, I like the way you mounted the other reader head to the cross slide set up, really neat. Two adjusters on the head allow adjustment of the spindle in the x- plane, place a protective piece on the table to support a bottle jack and undo the bolt holding the column use the bottle jack to raise the column and put shims in to adjust the spindle in relation to the table in the Y - axis.

I gather the scales for my install and need to ask, what size square tubing did you use? Or was that a custom bend.
I bent that up from flat sheet stock but I suppose it could be fabricated from a square tube. You would have to cut one side out for the bottom side.
Thanks!!! You saved me $30 since I was about to buy the LMS carriage clamp you bought!! I'm not a real machinist, so I'm going to investigate getting some help and maybe use your design. Just got a LMS 7450 mini lathe for hobby use (HO trains, model ships).
This so far is the best solution for fitting dro scales to a South Bend lathe. I plan on using your example to install iguaging scales to my lathe..Do you remember what length scales you used?

Just finished the cross slide portion tonite. 3 days of work and experimentation. Lots to digest here but I finally got it working as smooth as it was before the dro.... thanks for the detailed explanations. It made all the difference.

Olen, I just recently bought the LMS 6550. Do you know who I can contact to to get a kit to make my machine CNC?
Sorry, I don’t have any resources for CNC conversions. Everything I have is manually operated. Did you ask the folks at LMS?
@@olennemac2502 Olen, When I ordered my machine from LMS I asked about CNC conversion kits. They did not have any but I will keep checking with them. One outfit I contacted said they were getting a lot of interest in them and was looking for a vendor to make them. I'm not in a big hurry but I would like to do it fairly soon. Thank you for replying to my inquiry.

Hey Olen - thanks for making these videos. I just received my LMS Mill - same size - almost exactly as yours. How did you lift the Mill into place? I’m thinking to strap it under the Head. Is this correct?!I have an electric winch already in the ceiling. I’m also wondering whether it will swing much back and forth in the process. I other words, will it be fairly balanced when I lift it. If you recall when you did it, I’d appreciate your input. Thanks!
Hi Kirk, In my case I had a couple burly friends carry the mill down the stairs into my basement, they lifted it by the base and table. I think lifting it by the head would be fine too. I used to work in a factory, lifting things with cranes was an everyday thing. Make sure your path of travel is clear, make sure you have a way to escape if something goes awry and GO SLOW. As you mention balance is important, do a test lifting just up off the floor to see if it's coming up level, if not set it down and reposition the strap until you get it as level as possible. Did you feel as though LMS did as much as they could to help you with the issues? I always assumed the premium to buy a sieg from LMS was due to additional quality control and good customer service. It appears my assumption about additional quality control may have been incorrect.
This problem was probably the worst of what I ran into with my new mill. I resolved the issue by retapping the errant thread and everything has worked fine since. Hopefully you saw in my addendum that the folks at LMS did what they could going forward by communicating with Sieg. I'm impressed with Sieg that they took the time to respond and with LMS with getting back to me. I'm now 18 months down the road from this video and I still would recommend LMS machines even for the extra $$$. I have built 4 steam engines on this mill as well as a variety of other little side projects and the machine has performed without a hitch. I especially like the TouchDRO system that came with my mill, it has been very consistent and holds tolerances within .0005" which has made the bolt circles workout for perfect fits on the cylinder heads for my engines. - Olen
What was the procedure to have the iGaging DRO to display 2 X the value on the X axis? I am concerned that the value displayed will be 1/2 X to small.
To my knowledge there is no provision with the iGaging DRO readout to change to 2x the value.

How did you bolt the lathe down?
I have bolts running up through the tool cabinet. Admittedly they are a challenge to get to.
Excellent video. The speed is just right for someone trying to learn how to use the function. Some points you might add: 1) the workspace preview function, 2) how to use the "automatic selection" function, and 3) how to erase what you have done and start over. I still haven't been able to figure those out.
Good questions Joe! I haven't figured them out either. #3, how to erase is particularly frustrating. The only thing I figured out is reboot the tablet. You'd think there would be a better way. Still searching.
@@olennemac2502 I think I found it! There is an item called "clear points" in the workspace screen (use the 3-dot menu to get there). Hope this helps.

Out of all the videos I have seen for adding a DRO to a lathe, especially a South Bend, this has the be the most ingenious method. While most folks use the mounting holes for the follow rest, this is not a option for me because i do use it. Do you have pictures or plans posted somewhere else? What length scale did you use for for axis.
Details on the scales are in the first video's description. Everything I did is in the 2 videos. I measured and fabricated as I went along, holding parts up to my lathe and fitting it up so, sorry, no additional photos or drawings.

I recently acquired a South Bend copy (Sanches Blanes) from brazil. I was wondering how to mount a DRO on this machine because it doesn't have a straight line on it (except for the ways). Too bad I don't have a mill yet. Found your channel and subscribed, because you deserve more followers. Have a good one from the Netherlands

First.. nice job,, want to add this to my SB 9" Is there a reason you did install the carriage readout scale a little further back so you did not need to mill the nut?
By milling the nut, I got the maximum travel for the scale. It gains an extra 1/4".
Great job on the video and your engine. I like the way you finished it. I have the LMS 7550 Deluxe lathe with DRO and I’m waiting on a back order on the mill you have. So keep these videos coming.

Very nice job! I did a simular install on my Atlas 618 using the Iguaging scales. I would highly recomend looking into the Touch DRO. It works in conjunction with the Iguaging scales and gives true DRO function including lathe mode. It uses a tablet for larger resolution viewing. It's a great asset to the scales, also allows for linear scale adjustment by the way! I'm sure you will enjoy your DRO over the dials, I sure do!

I was a little surprised by the comment on the lack of information in the manual. I used LMS's generic mini lathe user guide to set-up my no-name mini lathe that came with a 2 page user manual, so I was surprised to see they just provided the bare bones sieg manual, usually when they brand a machine they write a manual for it. Their manual for the 3990 mini mill that I'm currently getting set-up is pretty comprehensive, the column mounts are similar so you could download this manual for tramming instructions, but it's basically measure, shim, repeat. Also, Grizzly is a great source for Chinese machine user manuals. I was able to find a suitable manual for my generic mini-lathe there, I was even able to find parts and a manual for an old no-name band saw I picked up at yard sale from Grizzly. I believe the equivalent grizzly model of your mill would be the G0759. Just for the heck of it I checked out their manual, 57 pages of everything you could possibly want to know, except how to tram the column, lol. But there is a bunch of other stuff like spindle break-in procedures which even LMS doesn't include in their own manuals. Nice to see other Granite Staters here.
