Ultimate Saxophone Lessons

Another Beginner Sax Students improvising after 5 months.
I'm still amazed every time I am able to teach another new beginner saxophone player to improvise at such a high level in such a short amount of time. Especially when they're able to create strong phrases with strong sense of direction and be able to include articulation, dynamics and bending in under a year's time. It was impossible 20 years ago when I was teaching a more conventional method of teaching the saxophone and improvisation. I was frustrated for many years until I discovered my own teaching method which I developed from all of the various great teachers from my best improvisation teachers in LA to my Oboe and Flute instructor in grad school. There's a lot of important ingredie...

This is one of many students of Rick's who learned how to improvise in a few months. This video shows her progress after just 15 weeks. Hard to believe, I know, but she's not the first or the last. She's definitely got some natural talent but the speed at which she learned is because of Rick's system of teaching improvisation. Improvising doesn't have to be difficult but jazz educators are stuc...

Classical Trumpet Player after 2 months of Jazz Improv Lessons

This is my nephew who took classical trumpet lessons for a few years and could already play the horn pretty well. However, he didn't know much about how to articulate jazz and much less about improvisation. I think you can see that he picked it up really quickly. Here is him sending me a little piece of his practice after about 6-7 weeks. Call if you want to learn this method. It's the only sys...

You shouy advice his to toghten his neck strap songe can sit of straight it helps with air, and makes your back not hurt as bad after a while but hes doing great, i suck at improvising
amazing!
Perfected by Chopin codified by Bach, maybe. This is oversimplified account of the tonal system for public consumption.
If you know your scales and the basis of Diatonic Harmony, then you'll understand that this video is Solid Gold for composers.
Really excellent and useful lesson
This kid took two months to get ahead of where I was at two years
Imagine thinking folk musicians weren’t using these harmonies for years before western classical music figured any of it out
lol
What song is that?
Does anyone know the song?
Great tone to be just starting.
he's asian. they have xp multiplier 100x
This video and entire lecture is a perfect example of wizardry, a scam, a con, with the use of witchcraft so that you think you have just seen and learnt amazing things, when what you really have seen is showing off and sleights of hand. What he said about the octaves and fifths is likely true, but what he said about the thirds and fourths are completely false, he just made that up, also the millions of years bit it took to "reach" them. Music ideally, is ENTIRELY based on the octaves and fifths from the 2nd and 3rd overtones. Major thirds are NOT from the close harmonic series as Bernstein claims, and the notes of fourths are not in the overtone series at all, but rather in the undertone series ( the result of going down rather than up by fifths). The major 3rd is the 81st overtone and NOT the 5th overtone as Bernstein claims. We got major thirds and the concept of them from stacking 4 perfect 5ths and dropping it 2 octaves. That is a major third. The 5th harmonic is more akin to a diminished fourth an Fb above C, Except the 5th harmonic is ever so slightly sharp of that Fb, less than 2 cents sharp. All intervals in music (as opposed to the harmonic series) are ideally ratios between frequency ratios of powers of 3 against powers of 2. The powers of 3 give you pitch classes and the powers of 2 give you octaves. Music is expansive because we use only octaves and fifths and the stackings and octave reductions of these. We skip out on the other overtone series, because with each added prime over tone beyond 2 and 3 you get an entirely new dimension of notes, and this exponentially complicates your music to the point of it being fundamentally incoherent. The other overtones are for TIMBRE of individual pitches, not the fundamental pitches themselves Many people have tried to go higher, but they all failed in terms of creating a coherent music language and system. Music is only a coherent system with pure octaves and fifths, and this is what our music notation system today actually visually shows, 7 natural notes that are altered by sharps and flats. Music is also NOT 12 pitches, there are infinite notes per octave, and even on the piano with 12 keys per octave, there is in truth 17 notes per tonic chord. 7 naturals, 5 sharps, and 5 flats. C D E F G A B, C# D# F# G# A#, and Db Eb Gb Ab Bb, for a total of 17 notes per C major and it's 6 other modes. Once notes like Cb or B# or Fb or E# or Bbb come into play the tonic chord with either change between major and minor, or the tonic note will move to a new note. The 12 tone equal temperament tuning on modern keyboards and guitars simply approximates the true intonation, the true tuning, and instead of the fifths going on forever, they circle back on themselves, but in the process, with circling fifths tuning, it makes all piano music out of tune. If you notice when Bernstein goes up the fifths on the piano he slurs his speech at one point and is going up by sharps but then ends on C at the top? That is the sleight of hand I am speaking of. Going up from C is C G D A E B F# C# G# D# A# E# B#. you get a B# after twelve perfect fifths, but instead of explaining this, he very casually converts to flats while going up quickly so he ends back on C. B# and C are not the same pitch, they are very close in pitch and in terms of the approximate tones on the piano, they are the same key pressed for both, but in truth B# is slightly higher than C and is a diatonic leading tone to C#, whereas C tends to go down diatonically by step to B natural. C and B# lean in different directions and as such serve different harmonic and melodic functions. This is why our music notation system writes them as different notes and there is such a thing as proper chord spelling. If you spell and subsequently tune your notes according to your misspellings you will hear how the harmonic function of the notes begins to brake down and the music will sound out of tune. C major chord is C E G, not C Fb G. C Fb G is a viable chord, but not in the key of C major and it functions different, and sounds different though similar when heard out of context or real music. There are many misinformed, MANY, about music and tuning. Bernstein may have known, but kept it secret from the public. Unless you understand proper tuning according to what the world calls Pythagorean tuning, powers of 2 against powers of 3 in ratio, than your understanding of music will be cut off at a certain point, you will not be able to understand past that. Do not be fooled by the likes of Bernstein and Adam Neely and all his friends which tell you the 5/4 is the major third, and that just intonation is 5 limit just intonation. Just intonation is 3 limit just intonation, even in chords and triads.
Great video, would love to see any updated thoughts on the used Sax market.
You're doing great. Keep it up!
Very convincing!
it’s always the great feeling when u get to play a song with your instrument it’s so satisfying for my opinion😂
God
Excellent is great .!! Congratulations
Very useful as a basic framework . For people not analyzing music , it would be great just to display a second sheet with some examples of your approach to the basic chord in 8,triples and 16. I'm trying to hear them so but I believe for some it could be useful.
Is that alto or tenor play alto last year now playing tenor

Question?? Does he have small hands while playing the clarinet?? What is the brand name of the clarinet and is it design for small hands??? Please help
looks like a normal sized b flat clarinet, especially since it hangs so low on him. if you look closely his fingers are stretching a bit further than an adult hand would on the same instrument. not sure which brand but it might be a synthetic one, hard to tell from lighting.
Finalmeeeeenteee.... Top. Bravissimo.
If you’re reading this, please for the love of god teach him to not puff his cheeks. It’s great for clarinet and some brass but saxophone, you need a steady line of air.
Yes agreed ive played sax for three years now
Completely agree, but I will never not puff my cheeks when blasting the bari
You shouldn't puff cheeks on clarinet either
@@carlkoolkid5211 I only say this because clarinet has other more important things to worry about, you could be playing dark souls with your feet and taking a dump while playing the saxophone, it’s that easy (I’m a 6 year sax player I am legally allowed to say this)
To be completely honest some pro players feel more comfortable putting their cheeks when playing, I understand that this kid isn't a professional but what I am saying is that jazz is mostly preference so there's not a "right" embouchure for jazz
🔥🔥🔥🔥
what if i add a weird note ? That dosent sound good?
Excellent!
Classy...Great work..
🇱🇺😁👍
Damn! Had little idea of what he is talking about, but I so enjoyed this lecture. New to learning music and learning all I can.
1 year later, you get what he said, right?
Where can I learn?
Thank you so much for this video, Rick! I am a beginning tenor sax player - just a few weeks - and I think the difficulty I have been having with lip and tongue is because of the number of years I have played flute. Your new way to position my lip makes so much sense! Now for practice.
So far the best explanation I have seen. Thank you very much!!!
Great vid, Rick!!
Excellent ! And what about the difference between high and low notes? It's the tongue and flow direction the sane for all ?Thanks
It explains nothing, whatsoever.
Exactly. It is completely unintelligible unless you already know what he is "explaining".
Actually he is brilliant he did say a whole lot in a few minutes. He's teaching Harmony e Composition to advance students not beginners.
@@edigabrieli7864 This specific video contains nothing advanced, just basic harmonic series info and mentions (not explains) the tonic - dominant - secondary dominant relations. It just does not explain the Basis of Harmony in Tonal Music.
I didn’t understand much,lol
@@enricopriori1333 And once you understand the basics of music theory you understand everything he said.
This is so great. From the Renaissance to the Baroque in 5 minutes.
Great sax tips Mr thanks a lot, triplex with flavour.
He mentions Bach at the end... I guess there's no way around it, Bach is music and music is Bach.
Great job. I am also learning. This is my 4 months progress ruclips.net/video/QRO0ULZ9RO0/видео.html
This is part of Joe Allard’s method. Larry Teal’s method of the lip tucked in is more thoroughly researched and has produced finer artists. However, there is more to sound production than the embouchure. The purpose of embouchure is to minimize the facial muscles constricting the air channel, because the face and throat muscles are connected. This man doesn’t explain properly the muscular connection of the face to the neck. If he understood the purpose of embouchure, he’d probably be teaching the lip tucked in method, which reduces strain in the neck.
charlatan says what? No actual useful information here don't waste your time
I am also learning sax. This is my 4 months progress ruclips.net/video/EsC3Uw0IT44/видео.html The quality of your sound is way better than mine
Seems like you found the Holy Grail for those who like me struggle with conventional ways of learning improv. But how do you get those long sequences of great notes, you must still be mining scales, chord tones and so forth, surely, for content; not just simple approach notes?
What mouthpiece do you useing?
Marvellous and well explained. But take a look at Martin Schmidt-Hahn s clarinet-sound as well. He is creating his sound with a german-system-clarinet
This is great man
Como conseguir esse método aqui pelo Brasil????
