Hello! My name is Kristina. I am a Harvard and MIT grad and former Rocket Scientist building my own home off-grid in Panama! On our permaculture farm, I experiment with natural building techniques from around the world -- from Morocco and India to West Africa and China. I teach locals natural building techniques. I am making a natural building school and permaculture education center, to conserve ancient wisdom, promote organic farming and sustainable living, and keep the local indigenous community employed. We are a 501c3 non-profit and plan to restore the deforested county we live in, an action which is threatening local water supplies and species. We hope you enjoy following our journey and learn various ways to incorporate the bliss of nature into your life in small ways! To donate to our cause, please visit www.turiyapanama.com !

Our Panama Junta de Embarre - Reviving the Mud Home Tradition
Просмотров 7247 месяцев назад
In 2019, I spent weeks inviting our neighbors in the Panama countryside to our junta de embarre, a mud-home building celebration, where the owners provide the materials, liquor, meals, snacks, and live music, and the attendees help you build part of your mud home (casa de quincha). This is a dead tradition, only seen in local festivals but no longer in actual livable homes. This is the footage ...

Are u Arab
Everything I read says it’s unlikely or not a good idea at all to build in cold humid climates…. Which logically ( as far as I can understand makes no sense), all these master builders and cob lovers will tell you all about the homes in the uk… and tell you you can’t do the same here. Maybe they’re just not being clear enough, but it’s making me uneasy.
@@Maggiewuvsrufus I don't know why or where you have heard that it can't be done. There are historical mud homes all over the world in colder climates because they are excellent for retaining heat in winter. It just needs to be planned properly. You have to have it cure all summer because frost will open up cracks. If fully cured over summer, it will be excellent!
@@turiyapanama I guess they’re meaning because it will be so hard to heat it, and they said in my book straw bale is untested for very long in humid conditions, I live in wv- it’s a temperate rainforest, very humid- but I don’t think any more humid or more cold than where the cob houses stood for hundreds or etc of years….. at least not drastically. I don’t understand why they would say it will be so horrible to heat it, when people must’ve done it for hundreds of years or more…. I guess people were at home more too. Timing would be hard for me but I’m going to try to not build so big- rainy season is supposed to be in fall/winter but we can get some bad storms in spring / fall. Thanks for reassuring me.
@Maggiewuvsrufus I have a strawbale shed that is 4 years old in the tropics and I tested the straw and it is dry and healthy! It was also being hit by 6 months of rain each year on the outside earthen plaster. I think it is very resilient as long as there is also internal ventilation like windows and high roof openings!
I've seen plasterers use lard for lime wash as well. I guess it works the same as the olive oil.
@@christophersmith8014 yes it does!
Thanks for sharing your house building journey! What an amazing sustainable home.

@turiyapanama thanks for clarifying! white plastered walls on cob houses are historically more common, so i got a bit confused :)

I would love a Q&A platform! I love your content and decisions and so curious to learn more. How did your family feel about this transition? Do they visit your beautiful home? You are highly educated but I’m curious to hear now that you live a simpler life, what are your thoughts of the American education system, cost of education, limited structure/environment of teaching etc. and lastly if you were to ever entertain this comment, what was the most difficult part of this transition, do you intend to live out your golden years in your “new” home? Thank you for entertaining my sincere curiosity. You have a beautiful life and family! Many many of us in the states watch and wish we were as bold as you to make the leap!

Good job❤❤❤
Yikes, back the Camara off that huge beak, it's clear your full of yourself, but how about less of you and more of the project💩
I know that palm oil isn't a drying oil, but I've been in enough kitchens with porous concrete, to know that it does sink in and cause water to bead. It's by far the cheapest oil available to us. Do you have any thoughts on using it?
I've seen a much larger system made from dry stacked bricks, at a market in Kenya. The bricks are wet daily. My attempts at evaporative cooling in the Philippines, have been less successful because of how humidity. Most days I'm only able to drop the temperature by 3 degrees in coastal Cebu. My farm in Bohol, is 8 kilometers from the coast and a few hundred feet in elevation. Our typical night time low is 23° C which is about 4 ° less than at sea level... The humidity is usually lower. On nights when the relative humidity is 75%, I've been able to achieve 18 degrees, which I find comfortable and most Filipinos find cold. Not suitable for long-term food storage but it's enough to control the ripening of bananas and other things. The evaporative cooling also means that our refrigerator doesn't have to work so hard. I will eventually do a whole house cooling system, based on a giant rain shower that has its own little river, heading out of the house to the fish pond. The water will come off of the upper river so that we aren't having to pump.
@@dalehodgins2138 super cool! I heard that they weren't effective in humid climates so thank you for confirming that based on your experience!! I appreciate all this info!
It's amazing that you were able to accommodate 100 people. I assume that most were involved in mixing and delivering the material.
Thank you!
It's looking good. We don't have the luxury of doing the walls first, in Bohol Philippines. We don't have a clearly defined dry season. We will get a post and beam structure with a roof on it, before cobbing the walls. I've done a similar thing when building a cabin on Vancouver Island, for the same reason. It's a bit awkward, working close to the roof, but I think this will be made up for, in that we will be working in the shade on sunny days and out of the rain when it's raining. We won't apply wet material to new walls, when it's going to rain for several days, but it will be possible to do plastering and fine tuning, which benefits from slower drying time.
I watched a video where someone did this and then after the tadelakt cured, they used a homemade beeswax sealer. This is also food safe, but I wonder if there will ever be an unwelcome reaction between the two materials. Do you have any opinion or experience with this?
The great thing about clay pigment is that it's not going to fade like a vegetable pigment would. They are various oxides, so you don't have to worry about them oxidizing. They are already very chemically stable.
I watched a video from England where they were repairing some wattle and daub on a 14th century house. In a hidden cavity, he discovered some mix in a cavity, that had been discarded centuries ago. He saved some of it for testing, since they are associated with a museum, then he wet the rest of it and used it to conduct repairs. His visual analysis, told him that it was the same clay found out in the garden and that they had used horse hair and straw. The man was very pleased to be using material gathered by distant ancestors. He reported that it made a nice sticky mix, that adhered very well to the existing wall.
I have watched many of your videos on another platform, but this is a good review. We get earthquakes in the Philippines, so I will be using diagonal bamboo bracing on a frame similar to yours. Cogon grass grows 6 ft tall and it's strong. That along with rice husk, and slaking lime, will be part of the mix. I've made pottery before and will build a large kiln, used to fire limestone, so that we have an abundant and cheap source of lime plaster. The kiln will also be used to fire clay items. I expect that our mix will be halfway between cob and hempcrete, although no hemp will be used. Cogon grass, rice husk and coconut coir, are all suitable add mixtures.
I've been to several cob structures on Vancouver Island, where we get a huge amount of rain. The most important thing, seems to be the roof overhang. It needs to extend a good distance from the wall, and then it's best to drain onto a no splash area of gravel. Some structures have been built without consideration for groundwater wicking. The ones that have done well, are built on a foundation that keeps them away from ground level runoff, and with the cob starting several inches above ground level.
This plant was introduced to Africa, where they have developed several decorative items made from it.
I like the idea of a solid bed with nowhere to sweep underneath. For us, that also means nowhere for snakes or spiders to hide.
This is amazing wisdom of our Ancient Ancestors! How amazing that anyone can build a lil fridge of 2 unglazed clay pots, some sand and a bit of water!!! Truly sustainable off grid living! Thank you ancestors and thank you for teaching us this! Of course this amazing fridge knowledge has been erased by the yt colonizers, because it's not a complicated machine built only in specialized factories and it works without any electricity, so billionaires can't extort money from poor people on it
Three years ago i was in the Philippines watching your channel and built one room with mud straw walls. Now going back to the Philippines next month and going to build a bigger room.
