Great interview for you guys very interesting. Not to be mean but i think sometimes in the old days you guys sounded more like the Eddie and Dave show and although y'all were trying to put the two worlds together there were places that it just wouldn't mesh. Van Halen had to eventually become one or the other an the Eddie show had to win out because ultimately it's the Way Dave would respond to the wonderful stuff Eddie would come up with musically that made Van Halen what it was at that time. Like Dave would say: because after all whats life without a little flavor Nothing like sprinkling a little Dave on top the Eddie to make the obvious even more obvious. The band is Eddie his style and his sound musically but after hearing the first single released by you with steve vai no one could deny that Dave was a big part of van halens sound. It was what it was and it was great but unfortunately that magic will never be again that's just life. We roll roll with punches and move on.
Wonder what was in the pillow. Money, Drugs?
Dave used to make a certain face, it looked as if he was very ill in his stomach or about to eat worms in the garden. I asked him about it one day....this interview reminds me of that face......he said, what? Then looked in the mirror and said, OH, that Joe.......a famous baseball player that did commercials for razors........I said, NOPE, it's not him. Just be YOU.
The real Van Halen
Wow such a cover up of too much alcohol and drugs, look how awkward they were talking to each other even after all those years.
And to think will never have this again. Thank god I saw them many times starting in 1984 with my uncle. The son of a bitch was supposed to take me the year before and I even bought a ticket but he had given my ticket to a girl. Hence I didn't go. But I made sure I went the next year with him. I can still smell the weed and cigarette smoke. I can still feel the sticky beer on my feet. I remember David Lee Roth singing hot for teacher while holding one leg in the air and bouncing on the other. 👍👍💯💯
As expected DLR hogged the mike, wold have been better w/o him. Alex looked like he wanted to strangle him few times
😂😂😂
HERMAN AND MCBEAN
Holy crap. I loved this station in the early 80s
I listened to this and ZETA 4. Hope everyone is well. Such great times and memories.
Zeta 4 was awsome too
I don't think DLR was "great" . I don't think Alex was "great" . I don't think Michael was "great". I don't think VH music was "great". I do think Eddie was "GREAT". Their songs were fast paced party songs and covers . They aren't deep or profound or too meaningful in content. Not musically complex or difficult to grasp. What you hear is what you get. It filled an empty space that needed filling . Eddie was everything . The others came along for the ride. Alex was a solid good drummer but there were plenty of those at the same time and he wasn't the best of them . He was certainly very good. Dave had a presence that fit the attitude and not much else. NOT a real singer he was more a guy who talked his way through the song with an occasional high pitched screech . People give him way too much credit. Think about all the truly GREAT singers and it puts him in perspective. All show . Which is cool and nothing wrong with it. But that don't make you "great". Mike barely cut the mustard . Voice was good and a much needed high but that isn't "great". Eddies greatness was one dimensional and limited . Some of his stuff sounds so out of place and unmusical but back then people were shell shocked and star struck . His ability to POSE was GREAT! Perhaps the GREATEST photogenic guitar player ever. Some of the images of him live are truly GREAT. So great that they stood the test of time and still seen as some of the most iconic rock images that were ever taken. VH was a very good band. Seen them a dozen times or so. 1978 was my first .
Dave is not a good interviewer but more so being interviewed. He talks too much!
I wish they did many more of these discussions .
They couldn’t because the drugs and alcohol was so controlling, they barely got thru this fake interview, the Van Halen’s as nice as they were, really greedy at the end 10:31
Roth is hilarious. He asks them questions and then answers them himself. So annoying but in a lovable sort of way. I can see how they could only take so much of him.
And Ed didn’t smoke one god damn cigarette.
I met & had some drinks with Dave years ago at a club in NYC. He’s just like you see here. Always smiling, laughing and he’d throw in the signature scream like in his songs. His energy is amazing and positive.
1983, I moved to Lauderdale...with my Uncle, got a job...workin at 16!! He had the biggest stereo ever this was jamming all the time! Best times...ever!❤😢 #thewonderyears "WSHE...SHE'S ONLY ROCK N ROLL"!!!!❤
Shame that Michael Anthony was omitted from this exchange. MA is one of the best ever backing vocalist, and he should have been invited to this sit down.
Who says he wasn't?
I think what Eddie is telling everyone here is that.. instead of wasting half your life trying to replicate his style and tone.. spend more time trying to create your own identity and sound. I’m sure he is happy you are inspired by his greatness. Steve Vai, Satriani, and many others were influenced by Van Halen.. but have created a name of their own
Spot on and that's why Ed would not have liked Sam's Chickenfoot tour covering VH.
"CNN ruined everything" 😂 well put Alex. This is why I love this band!
IF you're being interviewed with Dave, then you could take a 20 minute break and no one would know you were gone. I always got the feeling that Eddie and Alex (especially Alex) were afraid to play with anyone but each other. Alex still hasn't organized a tribute to his brother, which is a travesty.
Dude they represented partying and having a great time in the 80’s. Larger than life , especially for a young 14-15 year old kid back in the early 80’s. Such great times. And the music was incredible. 🏁🍺
The pillow was in one of Al bass drum,,,lol
Im so glad I found this. So awesome to watch these three guys talk so candidly about their experiences.
Van Halen brothers are players man. -this aint no lonely hearts club band.
I love watching these guys sit down and discuss the old days. So glad they made up and we got to enjoy these conversations.
But you know what, they all shit on Michael Anthony
It bothers me that the Van Halen brothers were able to bury the hatchet with David Lee Roth but they never made peace with Michael Anthony.
@@marko.5511 Michael made his choice and went with Sammy in 2005. That was a sin in the brothers eyes. Especially after Sammy just repeatedly trashed them after the disastrous 2004 reunion tour. I think that’s why they never made amends with him.
@@wiley666 Eddie made peace with Sammy and Dave before his death he could have done the same for Mike.
@@marko.5511 Sammy says he made peace with Eddie. But I don’t think they ever actually did. Alex never confirmed it.
I could sense a few uneasy moments from Al in this video. Overall, it was fun to watch and listen to these guys reminisce. They are one of the most dysfunctional hard rock bands ever but simply phenomenal at making music together. Had Michael Anthony been part of this reunion, he would have been the icing on the cake.
Mike chose his own path .
Love this! Wish it was MUCH longer!
What a lovely moment with DLR Eddie, and Alex!🥰🎸
Can all just appreciate how cool Alex Van Halen is? And how criminally underrated he is as an all-time great drummer.
factual statements.
Not underrated...just stays out of the limelight
@@bjmcmahon722 no, you’re right, Alex could care less about promoting a public image.
yes funny guy,,im sure fun to hang with,,,,,great drummer
Shit he's REALLY good.
Ed also went through some very rough times and here he seems quite at ease and enjoying the moment. In fact it makes me quite sad seeing him in such good spirits knowing he’s no longer with us. Such talent
one of Eddie's best qualities is his smile. The way he would smile when he plays or here when he has a memory and smiles, it's genuine.
I’d always thought these guys ended on bad terms but here it just seems like mutual admiration and camaraderie which I find immensely heart warming. There was a lot of harsh words passed around prior to this.
its a pressious video makes me wonder what when wrong what made them broke
Better, not bitter.
Where is part one?
Re😮a lot NJ But of
Both Eddie and Alex have a big heart and a gentle soul... Because they're Dutch Indonesian!!❤️
Precies!
When Dave interrupts Al at 8:00 it’s just kind of interesting because it makes me think of how it would have been back in the day with Diamond Dave. Alex’s body language until he speaks again just shows how he is internalizing the anger behind the interruption. Notice his hands and the SNIFF of annoyance hahah. I can only imagine what this was like after Al had consumed 3 bottles of Vodka and Dave just cutting him off mid conversation back in 1984. Anyways. Good video. Wish Mikey was there. But rip EVH. The god of Heavy Metal.
Valerie wore one of those VH platinum necklaces mentioned at 13:50 on some episodes of “One Day at a Time”.
It's sucks wo Mikey
Why do people still whine about mikes absence
God bless Dave😄.I know he doesn't mean to.but he's so happy,, he kinda keep interrupting Ed,and Al but it's because he's so happy to be with them.peace brothers
That's very Dave
Thank you guys for everything God bless you ❤
I’m glad that this happened
This series, althoughhated to find, it's great. Low seeing Dave normal
I wish they talked about the old days more . I've only read or seen or heard very little of their lousy record deal . This two part deal explains why the albums were only a little over a half hour during their beginning . Unlike ex-wife number two , they don't publicly bitch about anything and everything . They never really talked about their complaints from music critics .
Fantastic to see a bit inside this great band
