It’s for sure a wayyyy different land buying landscape than it was 25 years ago. It’s too bad because the market isn’t really very open to young folks looking to start a farm. Most buyers nowadays are high income or just investors. Too bad for blue collar America. Land access issues are a whole other topic but tied to these high land prices…

Land prices went up a lot from 2018 to 2020. They continued to rise up until the last year there staying steady. I doubt prices will go down much if any, main factor is there are more people and less land available.

Soy tends to be manufactured into other things. Tofu, soy baby formula, soy milk, edamame, sprouts, soy nuts, and a lot of meatless products. Other than food it's used for things like plastics, inks, paints, candles, and fabrics. Extremely versatile. Also where do you think the corn we eat comes from, the corn for popcorn, and other vegetables come from. Vastly different process for a lot of it but it's there.

Once on vacation I talked to a farmer from Wisconsin that had 3000 acres of green beans for the Jolly Green Giant Corp. They gave him a schedule of when to plant so they could be harvested as needed instead of all at the same time. Farming is far from just soybeans and corn. That corn your talking about, there's a plant near me that takes that corn and makes the corn syrup you find in many products today. Soft drinks are a big part of it.

You do realize that to put a crop in renting the land is around $1000 to $1200 an acre. And that is if you are doing all the work yourself. On a 1000 acre farm it is still over a million dollars invested.
