Some studs are kept for racing or breeding but to become a trainable usable horse they must be "gelded" for safety. They do cattle the same way, bull to steers. other way to castrate a horse is with some special pliers the tube to the testicles is cut without an incision.

It's done to animals so they have a much more peaceful, calm life, less health issues and certainly less fighting and aggression, hormones are a shit of a thing, not only for the owner. Stallions are very powerful critters and can be unwanted, due to their problem behavior. A desexed animal has a longer and happier life free from the problems that hormones create. Trust me, I'm a massive animal advocate but totally agree with desexing. It's not horrible, it's humane.
