Churchill Barracks

An October visit to Lippstadt, to take in the Herbstwoche fair and enjoy a few beers in the Golden Hahn. I took a ride around the barracks that was my home in the 70s, filming as I went - a bit shaky, riding with one hand holding the camera. Annotated what I know but not too familiar with the Signals side of the camp. My daughter and I also took a drive out to the Mohne Dam and enjoyed a beauti...

Day 5 at the National Tandem Rally in Alnwick, Northumberland was wet, so we took our day off the bike. The following day - Friday - was fine so we headed south, along the coast then turned back for Alnwick further inland. Stopped at Shilbottle, The Running Fox, for a tasty lunch.

Wednesday at the ~National Tandem Rally is usually a 'rest' day with no planned rides, but we elected to tick one off our bucket list and ride out to Lindisfarne. Drove the bike to Belford to make it a manageable ride.

Local ride

Rode out to Hartley Wintney and back. These are some of the incidents on the ride. Close passes or inconsiderate driving... Closed roads (experience tells us we can often avoid a lengthy and less stable detour and still get through. Rarely are we either told, or find the road is completely blocked. We've even been allowed to ride through a closure manned by police.

1969..seems like yesterday..the Golden Hahn
Thanks for keeping me company at the back Bob. Loving the video. As I take video I'm never in it, so nice to see evidence I was actually there. 😊
My pleasure Caroline. It was good to have a bit of company.
Thanks for showing the parts Short riders can't reach. We still did 41 miles on the Sunday as far as Beadnell and home. Barter books first visit was fun.
No voice-over or music, sorry.
Brilliant….thanks for posting. Ex Pom living in Australia now, but this is definitely on my bucket list.
does that material breath at all? I almost work up sweat going from my vehicle parked then gimping to the store. How does it work inside say a pub? would it be too hot? Thx
She doesn't 'glow' much and we only wear this gear for the Tweed run... normally it's lycra like the rest.
Hi Bob, This is a bit of a funny question but....i need some advice!!! I am considering buying one from 2010 from Germany. The bike is in good condition and the seller is asking for 2700 euros, which seems a bit expensive to me. What do you reckon would be a fair price? Thanks heaps in advance
It depends on the condition really. I think it's a bit expensive for a 2010 model, but if it's in really good condition, then maybe 2500€. Also check that the reinforcing bracket is fitted over the join... it's not on my Pino in this video, but they issued a free maintenance upgrade to reinforce the join, as there's cases of the welds failing. If it doesn't have the bracket, check the welds around there.
Wow, what a messy trail as bicycle detour - we should force the responsible persons to cycle this track each day for a year…
Oh my lord. Roadie nightmare! Not so many small rivers to traverse on the trainer.
I been trying to book for this tweed run for 2 years why was it not advertised
It was, on their Facebook page.
Would have loved to have had some 1930's jaunty music to go along with it.
Hi Bob , many thanks for your reply. I can see I shall have to go over and explore the area with family photos from the 1950s in hand! Some years back I visited the old Northumberland barracks and our family quarters at Menden from 1958'ish following 58 Medium's move to there from Lippstadt. As with Lippstadt the barracks area has been transformed into civilian accommodation and the gun park garages turned into business workshops and storage. How the world moves on. Best wishes to you and your friends and colleagues from your service at Lippstadt.
Hi Bob, I really enjoyed your video and you clearly enjoyed your return there and explaining to your companion the purpose of various buildings. I hadn't realised how massive this barracks was/is. I was living as a 5 year old with my parents in one of the officers' quarters circa 1956 when 58 Medium Regiment was based there but soon after moved to Menden. I thought I caught a glimpse of those quarters roughly at 4.02 on your film. Would that be correct? I remember the house very well but cannot put it in context of the barracks as a whole. Many thanks.
Hi John, The quarters up by the old NAAFI building were newer - built long after I left in 78. All the old gun parks have now been built on or landscaped over. In the 70s the married quarters were not within the camp confines, but elsewhere in the town and surrounding villages.
Based here 83 to 86 27 Field RA amazing to see it looking like this now the cookhouse looks the same and the HQ does too I worked in there. Good Times
It's illigal, as far as I know, to pass any mod road island on the wrong side, similar to going the wrong way down a one way street
I love a railway gradient! The Height gained sneaks up on you! Then wheeee!. The Falls of Dochart looking a bit dry!
Good to know it's not just us doing mad off-road tracks!
Next vid has a more radical little climb/descent...loose shale hairpins. Will publish in a day or three.
Loved this video, my dad was stationed there 72 to 78 with the RA. If I remember correctly the church outside the gates used to be a cinema we went there for the Saturday matinées. We lived in Akazien Strasse, I went to BFES Lippstadt....loved my time there. Looking to go back and visit next year June 2022
Squeaky brake! Might get myself some fish, chips and mushy peas tonight. :)
Squeaky brake saves having to use the bell.
I used to stag on the gate with a 9mm pistol. Miss the triangle too!! 6 bty 27 Fld Regt, 84 - 86.
Where did this ride take place ??? ... We think that it looks like the Mortimer/Silchester area
Started in South Tadley to Baughurst, Charter Alley, Stoney Heath, Baughurst and home.
@@bobbending Thanks ... BTW: We left Tadley in 1959
Jolly good show!

Hi can I ask if that is a charger plugged into you phone? If so where do I get one and what what phone holder are you using please.
That's me and Brian at 13:33 and 14:04
Bob, Nice job! Lee & Vickie
Thanks!
look those stupid toffs
what was all the swinging the camera side to side sent me dizzy however the army barracks in germany where the british army was stationed were massive as I was stationed in Dortmund in 1980 at the royal artillery rapier barracks
It was a 'headcam'
I was there 1976 with 23 battery.
I was in 56 from early 73 til Oct 78. Good and bad times but I'd do it again. It taught me about myself and others a lot.
stationed here 72-76. ...56 heavy bty some great memories looks a bit different now.
I need your help I am writing an essay about the Churchill barracks in Lippstadt but I hardly find pictures of it from 1945-1992 and what they did in each part. Maybe you can show me where the headquarters were?
@@lachgeek851 Maybe a better idea to contact bob bending the fella that posted this vid up . He will probably be able to help more than me.
great vid :) thanks for posting .We are doing it this year .
Didn't spot him at the time, but I dread to think what the guy at 8.05 was doing!
That was my first posting in "85" after PMC & Bordon. 27 Fd Regt LAD then 49 Fd Regt took over then i moved up to Minden. Never forget my first night there. Arrived on a friday afternoon.Taken to KU's that night and abandoned with no wallet and no clue to where i was or how to get back to barracks.Seems a lifetime ago.good times and memories.
KU's Five D's to get in, all night disco! Top days.
Grew up there, born in Iserlohn, went to Lippstadt Primary then King's School in Gutersloh.........best part of my life. Summers spent around the camp pool, assault courses.
We were lucky getting Lippy.
Thanks for sharing! I spotted myself haha!
+Bob Bending I have walked from from Hampton Court to Waterloo. Thanks for inspiring me. It has been sooooo fun to do!
I use my 'cross bike to commute to work on, but this is what it's really for!!! (although looks like you're join a mountain bike. Probably more comfortable!). P.s. it's ok to take a few seconds break, mate ;) No need to pretend it was remarking the course ;)
wow well enjoyed watching this it amazing to the place again miss lippstadt so much thanks for puttung this video up so many fond memories here especially as a pad brat the youth club my old man served his last posting here (cpl john black) 49 field he was a post worker
Wow, I'm exhausted and impressed!
Great video, Bob. Love the configuration of the bike.
Hi Bob - how quick do you think you could actually break the Pino down into 2 sections? We have a Mini to fit it in... I have seen a video of one coming out of a 206 - but not going in!
Sorry for not coming back sooner... It still takes quite a bit of room, even split but I guess if you took the wheels and seat off it may fit - if the rear seat in the Mini folds flat. It only takes several minutes to split... release the chain tensioner and take the connecting chain off the rear crank then drop it into a placcy bag and tie (saves getting oil everywhere). Remove front brake lever and undo the steering connector. Then you can loosen the two allen keys that keep it together. It's easier if you have a Hase stand to hold the front up. Disconnect the wiring which runs inside the frame. Loose and fold the bars and fold the seat down or remove it. Getting it back together can be tricky without help but not impossible. I would allow 15-20 minutes to put it all together and ready for riding.
Bob Bending Thanks Bob - that is really helpful.
Had my first posting there with 27 regt ra as a newbie reme b mech
FantastiC!!
Nice to see Mum helps ;)
LOL!
What camera did you use to film this? I'm looking for one to film the next autumn classic :-)
Now that's a nice idea to go to next year!!!
a great find, i lived local for 12 years and remember finding this trail for the first time, back in those days the gully was more of a challenge the drop into it was a lot more severe and you had to duck a couple fallen trees laying over the chute. not to forget the massive bomb hole after you emerge from the chute. don't half miss it, going back as soon as i can, great post cheers!
Damn it makes you feel weird seeing how it has all changed
