New Fly Fishing Odyssey
США
Добавлен 18 сен 2013
Hi! I started Fly Fishing in 2019 and it's become an obsession ever since. I fish from the sea to high country...which makes for some pretty spectacular locations. I'll try to document my journey and hopefully provide some inspiration to go fish!
I'm new to the video world but please check out my instagram to see some of my previous trips.

Fall '24 Mammoth and Crowley Lake Fishing
Hi Everybody, decided to head up to the Mammoth Lakes area for some early fall fishing. Hit a scenic catch and release lake that only contains Lohontan Cutthroat and Crowley Lake. I've only fished Crowley with indicators and midges in the past...This time tried float tubing and stripping in some streamers.

Hi All, decided to make a short video about my trip to the Coronado Bridge in July. Still getting used to float tubing but it definitely opened up a whole new type of fishing for me. Hope to do some more exploring in the future.

Decided to head up to Mammoth Labor Day weekend. Fished and camped at Skelton Lake. Also can't be a 2024 trip without fishing in Bishop Creek!
Fishing Lake Sabrina, Bishop Creek, and Bishop Pass
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.2 месяца назад
Hi Everybody… Don’t worry, these are mostly new waters for me in the bishop area. I ended up hiking and fishing higher up bishop canyon than I have before. Also, float tubed Lake Sabrina right after a stocking! Beautiful scenery and some crazy weather. Thanks for watching and subscribe for my next trip!
Fishing Barrett Lake for Bass and Big Bluegill
Просмотров 1932 месяца назад
Hi Everybody. Decided to take a break from the mountains and head out for some float tubing. I try to go bass fishing once a year...usually I get on a boat but decided to change it up this year. First time fishing Barrett and it didn't disappoint. Thanks for watching!
Hiking and Fishing a New Lake in Bishop Creek Canyon 2024
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
Hi Everybody. Decided to explore a new lake up in the Bishop Creek Canyon. I had heard it contained fun sized brook trout, so I decided to check it out. Had pretty good action on my bamboo fly rod and tenkara rod. Really pretty area and decent weather. Would have been perfect if it was 10 degrees cooler haha.
South Fork Lakes fishing for Golden Trout 2024

If you've followed me for the last few years you know I like going up to the Cottonwood Lakes area to gear check for the season. Since Cottonwood Lakes 1-4 are closed to fishing until Sept, that leaves some of the surrounding lakes as the goto places. I haven't been up to these lakes in a few years and was pleasantly surprised. Got to use my new Nissin Zerosum 7:3 Tenkara rod as well.
Tarpon, Permit, and Bonefish Fishing Mexico 2024
Просмотров 5244 месяца назад
Hi All, this is my first international fishing trip for 2024. I've been waiting for this trip for almost a year and it didn't disappoint. The primary target was Permit but there was plenty of action. The weather couldn't have been any better (other than it was super humid haha) but I can't complain. Amazing location, Kay Fly Lodge - Punta Allen, MX, and great people. Can't wait to go back.

Yearly trip out to Henshaw. Decided to mix it up and wade this time. Still kind of cool so took awhile for them to warm up but when it turned on, it turned on! Trout season is almost here..so stay tuned!
Float Tube Fishing for Bass in Newport Harbor
Просмотров 3227 месяцев назад
Hi Everybody! It’s been a minute since I posted a video. Mainly because my trips have been primarily night fishing and my big trip to Seattle was canceled due to a polar vortex. Anyways decided to give float tubing a try and had a blast. Gave me Some much needed exercise as well haha.
Northern California Striper Fishing 2023

Decided to visit Northern California during the holidays. I’ve gone striper fishing before and knew this wasn’t going to be a high fish count trip. But I was hoping for some quality fish and it worked out.
Kennedy Meadows Golden Trout Fishing
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Decided to try one more camping trip for 2023. I saw the weather was going to be warmer than usual so that was good enough for me. (Luckily I brought my winter gear though). Ended up catching a golden/hybrid in the south fork of the kern river. I had heard rumors of the DFG stocking them there and it ended up true! Pretty cool you can catch sizable Goldens without having to trek too far. Thanks...
Fall 2023 Little Lakes Valley: Fishing, Hiking, and Camping
Просмотров 964Год назад
Little Lakes Valley is located across from Crowley. What makes it special is you start out at elevation. So it doesn't take much effort to get to the "backcountry". There are A TON of lakes with fish up there as well. This trip, I decided to bring my tenkara and trout spey rod...so lots of action and scenery.
Fall 2023 June Lake Loop Fishing and Hiking
Просмотров 794Год назад
Hi Everybody! Another backpacking trip canceled due to unusually cold temps and snow. Not to waste a planned trip, decided to head up to the June Lake Loop to fish. I had been there a few times for fall leaves but this was the first time fishing. Pretty area and lots of different fishing spots. Thanks for watching and subscribe for my future trips!
Colorado Rocky Mountain Hiking and Native Trout Fishing

Caltrout Photo Contest: caltrout.org/photocontest/vote-2023?contest=photo-detail&photo_id=46823 Hi Everybody! Went to Denver for vacation and decided to fix an Asterix in my native trout chasing career. A few years ago I went to Rocky Mountain National Park and thought I had caught a Greenback Cutthroat Trout. Turns out all the Greenbacks they thought they stocked were really Colorado River Cut...
man what a beautiful spot. I’ve been on that hike before but went to treasure lakes it was awesome great place if u are looking for goldens
Definitely need to get back to that lake
Going back home sucks.
Especially since the high country is basically 4 hours away from home
@@newflyfishingodyssey it’s 32 hours for me. 😂
Hey that guy is a great driver! 😅
Haha had the same thought
Nice fish Dude!
I like the videos where narrate....can you add it after the fact?😂😂😂
Haha I don't think I keep the old files
Nice tip on how to get unstuck from structure!
Thanks!
Catchin those Strypers is always fun. Flashes of yellow and black. Tough to clean, though...
Nice not having to hike 5 miles uphill either
Cool video. Holding fish by the jaw at that angle can injure them though. Should keep their bodies completely vertical or support the body with your other hand and keep it completely horizontal. Any angle greater than 10 degrees can dislocate the jaw and kill the fish. Cheers!
Understood. I generally don't bend them to lift them especially if they have weight. This one was pretty small and didn't notice until after i took a snap. That was my mistake
@@newflyfishingodyssey hey I appreciate that response. I’m not trying to shame you or anything, just spreading the word. I’ve made this same mistake myself in the past. Just want to pass on the education I received so we can protect this natural resource we love 🤙
Nice catches! How strong is the current there? Sometimes I fear I won't get back to shore with the float-tube in the bay.
Definitely something to check on before heading out. I’ve been stuck before where I couldn’t kick back until slack tide in Newport. Wasn’t that bad the day I went to Coronado. But I’ve learned it’s just not worth the trouble float tubing during max tide shifts.
nice video bud, may I ask what your setup is for the 2 hand rod? Is it a switch or spey? And how do you like it? I've been thinking about getting a switch rod for the back country. Thanks
It's a 9ft 9" 3wt opst micro skagit rod. So prob closer to a switch rod. It's great for backcountry lakes since there's usually stuff behind you. But it also has a pretty heavy head. I have a feeling I'm spooking a lot of fish on still mornings but I think the trade off is worth it for extra distance I get in close quarters
Nice ones!!! I'll have to try the fly game again next time. I just have too much fun tossin the Yama-Senko.
Haha and start tying game changers?
The lake on the steep trail is one of my favorites 🎣
There's just so many fishy lakes up there
@@newflyfishingodyssey yup. I've been backpacking and fishing up there 4 times.
I love South Lake and have done well there
I just came down from there right now haha. (No vid since this is like my 5th trip there this year..) but amazing place. Crazy how much the water level changes each year.
@@newflyfishingodyssey I had a day at South Lake where I couldnt even sit and relax. Every time I casted I got a hit. People were coming over asking me what was I using. I have a longtime friend who is a horse trainer around Bishop. He knows qall these spots that the public doesnt know. One spot is on Highway 120 off Hiway 6 out in the desert before you start to climb up into he mountains. You turn off a dirt road and drive about a mille and you get to this spring fed natural small lake. You ppull up in the early am or early evening and the Browns are just boiling everywhere. We throw them all back but its beautiful. Its private property owned by sheep herders.
We hit the back of the lake on kayaks @@JohnDoe-xu2vx
How long is the hike to long lake?
About 2 miles and 1000ft elevation
wow that environment looks like it would be natural for brown bears to inhabit...
Haha fortunately there aren't any there
What blank are you using in that video? Also, wt and length? I have a three weight and wondering if I need to go smaller
I used a Winston pure 7'6" 3 wt in the creek and a hardy zeph 4wt 8'6" at the lake. This was back when. I felt like I had to use all my rods to get my money's worth. But really any 3 or 4 wt will handle the vast majority of fish outside of trophy lakes/streams up there. Shorter does help in the creeks. But longer helps in the lakes so depends what you fish more.
@@newflyfishingodyssey being fairly not to Fly fishing, I’m still in the process of acquiring tackle. I probably can’t hike as far as you go, but for day hikes, I will be carrying a 9 foot four weight and a 7.8, 3 wt. rods. I was up there at the same time when you encountered Weather. I think it was three weeks ago. It was typically nice until the early afternoon and then we got beautiful thunder showers. Just beautiful. Actually went fishing each evening after the thunder showers and it was good.
I know that it is a few years old, but this is a fabulous video! Have been enjoying your channel over the last couple of weeks. On another video, you asked if you should do more on Cottonwood creek, absolutely! When you first start fishing in this video, how far in are you? It’s amazing how many flyfisherman that enjoy the Sierras that live in San Diego county.
Thank you for the kind words. This was I think about a year into it. I actually went back to cottonwood a few weeks ago but decided not to film. It was a good break and just did some creek tenkara. I'll prob make another video this weekend up by mammoth. Thanks for watching
My wife and I made this hike a few years back. Had the place to ourselves. Just like you, caught lots of little brookies, but on little spinners. Beautiful place to chill and have a picnic.
Amazing how just getting off the main path a little and you get some solitude on a super popular trail.
The water gets hit hard because of Facebook and RUclips
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Boring tenkara. Not gonna bother. Thumbs down.
Haha fishing is more fun if you mix up how you fish…
K,MART,
What flies did you take for triggers? Just crab patterns?
When I went both bonefish and crab patterns worked. Honestly presentation seemed more important, at least for my experience
I subbed What kind of tenkara rod at the beginning?
Thanks! It's a tenkara rod company beartooth. First tenkara rod I ever got...10 foot and packs down small. So pretty good option for the backcountry if you're looking for something that works ok on lakes and creeks.
curious about your switch rod. what wt lines / rod are you using?
Basically an opst setup. Their 3wt 9ft 9in. User their integrated commando line and tips. I was using the 5 ft floating head in the beginning of the vid but it didn't feel right. I think the 7.5 foot works better with it. The 8 foot sink tip goes well with it.
Awesome video ! Got one for Saturday 🚤 🤙🏻
Nice hopefully you beat the heat out there as well
Nice video dude - what lodge did you fish out of?
Sunset Horizon through Christmas Island Outfitters
How active are the Apache trout in late July, and do monsoons affect them?
I'm not an expert but they should behave like all other high mountain trout. If the water temp goes too high that's usually the only thing. But unlikely up there. Monsoons won't do much other than mess with water clarity. More of a problem for you if you're caught in one.
What month were you there?
May
LIved in Southern Utah for 3.5 years and never fished once…😢😢😢
Wow missed one there. Can always go back to visit …
Any hints on where this lake is by? Ill be up there this weekend looks like a nice place to check out. Great video👍🏽
I walk by the sign in the video 😏
If anyone's feeling overwhelmed and stressed by life, spend time communing with nature in this environment for a few days, sans electronic devices, you'll feel reinvigorated
100%. No cell service is liberating.
Very good
Thank you
No idea how i came up here, but amazing video, amazing skills and what a wonderful view!
Haha thanks for watching!
Wonderful trip.
Thanks for watching
Nice!!! I always wanted to go there. How long is the hike to there from the parking lot?
Depends on your hiking uphill at 10000 ft speed haha. But it’s about 4.5-5 miles with about 1000 ft elevation I think
@@newflyfishingodyssey thanks it looks like i can do the hike within a day if i go real early
Just found your channel today
Welcome!
You did great nice work and video
Thanks
They get picky when they've been caught a bunch of times
Was up here Memorial Day weekend all the lakes were completely frozen still. Looks like you crushed it!
It was fun! Still kind of funny hearing normal conditions given all the recent drought years or the crazy snow year last year.
does the pass that connects to big meadow take you down kennedy?
Not too familiar with all the roads between kernville and Kennedy. But if you're talking about Sherman pass, then yes it goes directly to it.
Nice video. Heading up Monday. What was that fishing spot at the end? Looks peaceful
You can fish most parts of bishop canyon. It's just one of the pull offs. So if you see cars, you can prob fish it.
Ya ok golden trout boy
Take the gloves off when handling the fish. THey remove the protective slime coat from the fish
Nice video. Were you throwing dries or nymphs? What’s your favorite flies for Goldens?
This lake is kind of pressured so I tried everything, dried, nymphs, streamers. I usually just use a hopper dropper setup during the summer though
Awesome country up there
It really is. Too bad the season isn't longer
buzzer beater!
Sure felt like it haha
Looked like a fun trip!!! Lots of variety…multiple tarpon shots…multiple permit shots. Hmmm, the line tender guide seemed to be glued to your hip?
Yeah they were pretty much up there full time spotting. I didn’t mind since I can’t see fish very well haha
Awesome! What fly were you using?
Not sure what they’re called. But they look like red wooly buggers with rubber legs.
Please don’t drag the fish along the ground, especially golden.
Yes I definitely try not to. Accidents do happen though.
Nice!
Thanks!
Is this the Kennedy Meadows campground at the end of Windy Springs Road ?? The trail you hiked to the river, is this the Pacific Trail trailhead that runs thru the campground??? Motocamped (motorcycle) a few years ago on July 4th weekend. Amazing, barely 1/4-1/3 campsites in use whereas Fish Creek and Troy Meadows were full to capacity with the rowdy off-road crowd. To my knowledge the creeks were mostly dried up due to the long drought. Nice video, tight lines!!
Yes it is! I just fished Troy last week and the flows were good. Just have to go early in the season. Good luck
