Do you know why Democrats had to be coaxed to chant USA? Because the Republican MAGA folks have used American Flags and the chant to USA to bully people. The best night of the Democratic Convention was when the campaign reclaimed the flag and the chant. Republicans don't own patriotism and the American Flag belongs to all of us. The other BIG deal is that waving a flag is a symbol of nationalism.. and too much nationalism is the precursor to war. When I went to Germany to give a talk, I visited the elementary schools where there were no flags in classrooms. My German guide told me why, "We learned our lesson in WW ll. Not ever again." Einstein said, "Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind." I love our country, for its ongoing struggle with historic exclusion of women, people of color and gender diverse folks and work toward the "beloved community." Wave the flag high. We are going to have a multi-ethnic woman president who earned her way to the position by being smart and tough. She's the real thing.. AN AMERICAN!
