"The Repairer of Reputations" (from "The King in Yellow" by Robert W. Chambers, 1895)
It's nearly Halloween - my favourite holiday - so I thought I'd do something different to celebrate. Reading a classic horror* short story - "The Repairer of Reputations" by Robert W. Chambers, from the 1895 short story collection "The King in Yellow".

Egyptian Hieroglyphs

My video about the basics of reading and writing Egyptian hieroglyphs. One thing that I wanted to mention but had to cut because it didn't fit naturally into the stript is a note on terminology. "Hieroglyphic" is an adjective, the noun is "hieroglyph". You'll often see people saying that something is written "in hieroglypics" but that's wrong. It's written in hieroglyphs, or hieroglyphic charac...

As of 1 Jan 2024 Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, is officially in the public domain. I'm sure a thousand other people have uploaded this same short to RUclips today, but I'm doing my part. Disney's lawyers can kiss my arse. On a semi-related note: Sonny Bono's corpse can kiss my arse too.
Basque (Euskara) - A Unique Language in Europe

My video about the Basque language (Euskara), a fascinating language spoken in Europe and unrelated to any other living language. I have re-written the script for this video multiple times and I ended up cutting quite a bit of what I originally planned to talk about to make the video less bloated. In particular, I originally had a much longer section on the verb system but I figured most people...

Why are turkeys called turkeys? A deep-ish dive into the name of this bird

Morphosyntactic Alignment - Ergativity, Austronesian Alignment and More
this is such good timing. I was just thinking of listening to this
Thank you so much my good sir! I haven't forgotten about you, still got notifications on! I think this will be a really good video to fall asleep to.
If you're curious, the French quote at the beginning roughly translates: "Do not mock the insane; their insanity lasts longer than ours ... that's the only difference"
22:20 this matters for cards like the mycotyrant. descend only counts for permanent "cards" going to graveyard. Since tokens technically go to graveyard (they just dont stay there) I thought they would count, but since they are not cards, they dont.
If I kill all players in the game with a spell including myself (Rankle's Prank), is that both winning and losing at the same time?
I have played this game from the very beginning. I still can't say i know all the rules. *Cough*layers*cough* If anything, having known old rules can occasionally confuse me even more. Fortunately, this happens rarely. So what i'm saying is: Thank you SO much for doing this iceberg series! Very useful concise explanations. 👍
I actually had to explain that the tokens are not playable spells and are not (literally) shuffled into a deck.
Mirko from Karlov Manor cares about milling so 🦦
A concise explanation of "missing the timing" in YGO: "if" triggers check the previous game state; "when" triggers check the last card played. Let's say I cast a sorcery and you counter with an instant. "if a sorcery is cast..." triggers will go off bc a sorcery was activated during the previous stack, while "when a sorcery is cast..." will not , bc the last card played was an instant. That's the basics, but for nuance: a] mandatory "when" triggers will go off regardless; b] "when" triggers will go off if they are instant speed and the controller has priority (trigger abilities are sorcery speed by default in YGO, and start a new stack). c] if the "when" trigger is activated by the resolution of the bottom card in the stack, e.g. "when a sorcery resolves..." , it will go off. d] tributing for cost is another common source of missing the timing. "When this card is sent to the graveyard..." will go off if sent there by battle, but not if sacrificed for another effect, because the effect is the last thing to happen, not the sending to grave. e] there are a handful of cards, e.g. Obelisk the Tormentor, that have a "when" prohibition effect, meaning the very next thing that happens can't be the prohibited thing, but that thing can happen later down the stack. These effects are confusing and tend not to be printed anymore. f] in general, "when" effects are used when Konami wants to balance a particularly powerful triggered ability. Otherwise, they just make triggers "if." g] in the new rush duel format, the missing timing rule has effectively been abolished, which many players take as a tacit admission that this rule was a mistake.
The way you pronounce mana makes me physically uncomfortable but this is a really cool video :)
Detrimental*
You are so real for being an Olympics hater. I'm with you on this. Fascinating video, Kia ora
Also ya the olympics are screwed. You ever hear of the 1904 olympic marathon?
We need more vids!
“Token Jew” being an official, documented term in the history of the Olympic Games is insane
Bonus “fun” fact, that didn't fit into the video: the torches used for the first relay were made by Krupp, a company that would later supply tanks, guns and other weapons to the Nazis during WWII. After the war, several higher-ups in the company, including CEO Alfried Krupp, were found guilt of crimes against humanity for using slave labour.
Please do a nembe/ijaw language video.
"tokens aren't cards" matters a lot--your tokens don't go to graveyard, you can't return them to your hand, etc.
Idk whar rue f an ice berg in mtg is
Oh so sorry I have no idea what ice burg is !!! Wow thanks jerks
When ??? And how ??
intransitive verbs: adjectival phrases. A state is posited rather than an activity. Thus, the transitive verb describes activities. Your Basque is good 👍
Every nonland is a spell
Can you go over Osage? Its verb conjugation can be extremely difficult, especially for those who are accustomed to languages that deal with agent and patient paradigms (such as English or Basque); it is active-stative with some stative verbs conjugated as if they were active. There are several patterns of verb inflection; syncopating, fortisizing stop-stems, mutating k-stems, h-stems, nasal vowel stems, and regular. Also, the first person plural is highly variable and a few verbs show split alignment.
I wonder, will Aragorn, King of Gondor get +1/+1 from Crusade?
Interesting video but I cant get over how you say marner instead of mana
Meanwhile, tgere are 8 card types xD battle has entered the chat
You should look at Toki Pona next
The biggest issue with Esperanto is definitely the fact it was designed as an international auxiliary language for Europe and not the rest of the world. The vocabulary being almost entirely drawn from European languages is less of an issue than the phonology and writing system, IMO
About panglacial wurm, the interaction in the video is handled acceptably by the rules, but the rules do not explain *where in your deck* you place the panglacial wurm when you fail to cast it. This matters in the following situation: Alice is using Arid Mesa's ability to search her library. The top 3 cards are Panglacial Wurm, Panglacial Wurm, and Circle of Dreams Druid. Alice would like to attempt to cast Panglacial Wurm A, then fail to cast it, and move it somewhere else other than the top of the deck, leaving Circle of Dreams Druid 2nd from the top. If this is possible, she can then cast Panglacial Wurm B. She will get the mana to pay for it by using her Millikin to put her Circle of Dreams Druid onto the top of her discard pile so that she can tap her Volrath's Shapeshifter for GGGGGG.
In the situation with 3 Conversions, it actually matters which lands are in play. If you have the timestamp order M->P, S->M, P->S, - M->P only depends on S->M if there are some swamps in play that are not also mountains - S->M only depends on P->S if there are some plains in play that are not also swamps - P->S only depends on M->P if there are some mountains in play that are not also plains So if all lands in play are plains with no other subtypes, then M->P does not depend on anything, and it happens first. Then you look at S->M and P->S. Since there's a non-swamp plains, S->M depends on P->S, so you run P->S first. Then you run S->M, making all the lands into mountains.
Wall of Roots has been printed many times since Coldsnap, most recently in 2022.
G’day mate
For the token rule the new descend mechanic would not trigger with tokens
By "natural gender" you mean "sex". Biological sex, or just sex, refers to your sex resulting from chromosomal expression. "Natural" gender is unnecessarily confusing and implies sex-gender causation for English speakers who don't understand how arbitrary gendering is.
Nice explainer. I found it interesting when in 'modern day' Egypt that when learning the language, where a letter is positioned ( each having three possible positions - first letter, a middle, or if the last letter decides on how it is pronounced. )is still totally relevant on what you have said here. Thank you for sharing.

Fascinating and elucidating as always!
Can you tell us about why is a language ergative? (Is it because of case markers? If yes, how?)
This is SUCH a hodgepodge of nonsense, holy moly, how/why would people subject themselves to playing this...? I WANT to like this game, the concept is cool, but the EXECUTION is UGH... like they were TRYING to make the rules as convoluted as possible. It feels like the primary design philosophy was "how can we make each card and mechanic appeal to the biggest most massive neckbeard nerds who get nerd-boners from reading a new card with some completely random convoluted mechanic that requires the player to hold more than 7 ideas in their head simultaneously (just for it to usually functionally be something trivial like you get to draw one more card or your creature is slightly stronger...)
