Music for a Gloomy Day: Prelude in B Minor, op. 28, no. 6 by Frédéric Chopin
This is the perfect piece for dark and melancholy days. The dolorous bass line is accompanied by repeated figurations in the treble that link this prelude to the insistent dripping of the "Raindrop" Prelude.

Goldberg Variation 14 by Johann Sebastian Bach
Просмотров 10819 часов назад
This variation is one of the most difficult to perform on only one keyboard. The hands are often crossed, and the rhythmic interactions are complex. This is also my penultimate Goldberg Variation recording (at least in this cycle), so stay tuned for number 26 in the next few weeks!
To a Water-Lily, op. 51, no. 6, by Edward MacDowell
Просмотров 61День назад
This piece was clearly inspired by Debussy, from the wide registration necessitating three staves at beginning and end to the choice of subject matter to the use of parallel fifths. It is peaceful, evocative, and quite enjoyable to play.
To a Wild Rose, op. 51, no. 1, by Edward MacDowell
Просмотров 79День назад
This is the first of ten Woodland Sketches by the American Impressionist Edward MacDowell. The composer indicates that it is to be performed "with simple tenderness". In common with other fin de siècle composers, MacDowell mixes Italian music indications with his native tongue, so we see both crescendo and "increase". This piece came to mind when contemplating festival music for my students. Do...
Prelude in A Major, op. 28, no. 7 by Frédéric Chopin
Просмотров 105День назад
Ah, suburbia, where on any given day, one may hear lawn equipment, delivery trucks, or home repairs in progress. The neighbor's contractors were making quite a lot of noise, but I think my audio recorder decided to filter most of it out. Let me know if you can hear the din! This prelude is simultaneously one of Chopin's shortest and most famous compositions, loved by choreographers, cinematogra...
Sonata in B Flat, D. 960: II. Andante Sostenuto by Franz Schubert
Просмотров 10714 дней назад
The B-Flat sonata is Schubert's last, composed in 1828, the year of his death. Scholars remain puzzled by the vast catalog of works penned by the composer in his final months. How could one man conceive, refine, and write down so many pieces in such a short span of time? This movement is in C-Sharp Minor, a stunning departure from the first movement's B-Flat Major. Schubert paints a stark lands...
Anytime, Anywhere [Hymn 1012] from Hymns -- For Home and Church
Просмотров 2821 день назад
A short and sweet song. I like the pastoral quality of the melody and harmony, and can imagine children singing this before dinner or bedtime prayers. Sometimes it is good to take a break from big showstoppers and play something simple and beautiful. 0:00 Introduction 0:05 Verse 1 0:27 Verse 2
He Is Born, the Divine Christ Child [Hymn 1202] from Hymns -- For Home and Church
Просмотров 12528 дней назад
Here is Part Two of Christmas in October! "Il est né le divin Enfant" is an 18th- or 19th-century French carol. It is included in the French-language edition of the 1985 Hymns of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints but has been re-arranged and translated into many languages for the new hymnal. A comparison of the French and English texts reveals that a somewhat loose and poetic tran...
What Child Is This? [Hymn 1203] from Hymns -- For Home and Church
Просмотров 74Месяц назад
Today we are celebrating Christmas in October! Any musician is aware of the need to prepare early for December festivities, so hopefully this will facilitate planning for choir rehearsals and congregational singing. This is a great arrangement of a familiar tune, so will be very accessible to singers, pianists, and organists. 0:00 Introduction 0:13 Verse 1 1:11 Verse 2 2:10 Verse 3
Sonata in F, K. 332: II. Adagio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Просмотров 146Месяц назад
Here is a delightfully operatic slow movement, full of soaring melodic lines, delicate ornamentation, and surprising harmonic shifts. The surrounding movements of the sonata are also great, but I was in the mood for an Adagio, so chose to share this with you today. Please note that the Henle edition provides the score both as it appeared in the composer's handwriting (Autograph) and the first e...
As the Dew from Heaven Distilling [Hymn 149]
Просмотров 9Месяц назад
This hymn has been a mainstay of our hymnals and the Music and the Spoken Word broadcast for many years. It is also delightful to play. Please enjoy the beautiful music and a few moments of quiet reflection. 0:00 Introduction 0:09 Verse 1 0:49 Verse 2 1:30 Verse 3 2:10 Verse 4
God’s Gracious Love [Hymn 1013] from Hymns -- For Home and Church
Просмотров 411Месяц назад
Here is another selection from the new hymnal of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This hymn is another 19th century classic new to us, but familiar to others. Its message of faith in troubled times resonates deeply with believers worldwide. The suggested introduction in the hymnal is half a verse. I chose to shorten it for this video. The first time we sing this in Sacrament Mee...
Goldberg Variation 17 by Johann Sebastian Bach
Просмотров 73Месяц назад
Here is another of what I think of as the "pretzel" variations written for two keyboards, they involve so much crossing and overlapping of hands that your fingers are in danger of being tied into knots! Perhaps one day I will try some of these on the church organ, to discover how much more comfortable they are to play! We are nearing the end of our Goldberg cycle. Please comment below with your...
Area Cut 2: Spinning Song, op. 67, no. 4 by Felix Mendelssohn [2024 TMEA All-State-Piano Etude]
Просмотров 66Месяц назад
For Area auditions, piano candidates will record measure 44 to the end as Track 3. If you will play a region audition, please refer to the complete recording of this piece: ruclips.net/video/yDbtCIBcINI/видео.html Spinning Song is one of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. It is in the composer's trademark _scherzando_ style, necessitating light, accurate fingerwork which can only be accomplishe...

Very nice!
Lovely playing ❤
Me en canto te felisito❤🎉🩰💃
Sehr schön gespielt 🎵 🎹 🎵 🎹 🎵 😊
Very nice technically demanding variation 😊
Thank you, Rebecca, that is just sublime! Well done!
Thank you! I enjoyed learning this one. 😊
🫶
I love it! Check your right hand on 0:20 there’s one or two wrong notes in that chord 💛
Definitely should have been C natural instead of C sharp ... none of the students learning this for TMEA commented on the error, so either they're being polite or there will be a lot of wrong notes in the audition recordings!
I love Scott Joplin
Hermosa pieza, virtuoso pianista.
Beautiful, your playing is inspiring :)
Good Job I loved the performance.
Hi Rebecca, I was looking for a 'mashup' of the violin concerto and piano concerto #4, as I often merge them in my head. Have you ever done that? Would love to hear it. And thanks for this post. Really enjoyed it. The day after hearing it with full orchestra. 🙂
What a great idea! I had not thought about that combination before. Thanks for listening. 😊🎶
Beautiful 1 John 4:19
Love that verse! Also Ephesians 3:17-19. Thanks for listening!
Hello, I was wondering if you have to do both pieces for auditions Thanks!
@bradleykembero9456 Yes, you need to learn both pieces plus the three orchestral excerpts for auditions. The judges will probably ask for a specific section, rather than the whole piece, but they will hear parts of everything.
I played a lot of Sousa marches in high school band, and they are just FUN to play.
What kind of music do you like the most?
I can't possibly choose one kind! Like people, there are too many wonderful genres of music to have a favorite. 🎶
@@recitalsbyrebecca Do you like ballet music?
Do you like waltz music?
Definitely! Very elegant and fun to play. 🎶
Would you like to do some more ballet music?
Hey good sound Rebecca👏👏👏🎼, Do you know where I can find the sheet music?
I have it in an older version of this book (which only had women's exercises). Not sure if it is in the current edition: www.radenterprises.co.uk/collections/voc-graded-syllabus-music/products/advanced-1-music-book?variant=40849426383011 Thank you for listening! 🎶
Bravo!! ❤
Thank you!
Beautiful! More Pugni please!
Beautiful! Please share more from this ballet if you have it! I agree Queen on the Day would be amazing ❤
Magical waltz, gorgeously played by you?💕💕💕
Beautiful!🌹🌹🌹
Hello, I would like to ask how this audition for All-state piano work, like do you have to audition for region first in order to be eligible for all state and for all state, is it a recording I have to do or I have to play in front of the judges. Lastly, do I also have to play excerpts too? I am very confused. Thank you.
To answer your last question first, yes, you will have to play excerpts as well as the etudes. The excerpts were just released on August 1, and I will record them within the next few weeks. Everyone who is eligible will do a recorded audition for all state. We will know the exact cuts for that on September 1, and you'll record at a school campus with a TMEA member monitoring the process. If you live in an area with a lot of piano students auditioning, you may have to do one or two auditions, probably live in front of a panel of judges, to qualify for the recording round. My region does not do region auditions, but we do a "pre-area" elimination round if more people want to audition than the maximum number of slots we have for the recorded round. Hope this helps!
Fantastic playing. Marvelous. This waltz was called "The Fountain" in Imperial Russia - toward the end of this scene, this waltz has a reprise with a finale of the Tsar Maiden's abduction... the Humpbacked Horse's magic caused a giant multi-colored fountain to rise from the ground to prevent the Tsar Maiden from escaping. The gallop in this scene is one of my favorites. You should record the underwater scene!
Please, please, PLEASE record this whole work! Of particular beauty is Ekaterina Vazem's variation as the Queen of Day, composed for the harpist Albert Zabel. My friend Jonathan Still recorded this variation for me with his sampled harp.
¡Muy muy bonito!! 😍
Can you show me the music sheet?
It's in this book. www.radenterprises.co.uk/collections/voc-graded-syllabus-music/products/advanced-foundation-music-book?variant=40849339154595 I can't photograph it for you because that would be a copyright violation, but you could download the full piano reduction from IMSLP and look for this excerpt there if you need a free copy.
@@recitalsbyrebeccaThank you so much!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@recitalsbyrebeccacan you maybe record the top view of you playing this piece? That would be nice!
@@recitalsbyrebeccaIt doesn't matter if you don't want to do it, i understand😊
It's a great idea, but, unfortunately, I don't have the right equipment to suspend the camera over the piano. 🫤
I'm learning this, well done 😊
Thank you! This variation is deceptively difficult... hope you're enjoying learning it! 😊
So very proud of you
This is incredibly awesome!
Beautiful song and video great work my dear Rebecca🥰
This is the perfect tempo for this invention. Well done 👍
Very nice, Rebecca😊
good looking vid, thanks
nicee
Love the camera angle and simple beauty of this sacred hymn! Thank you!!
IT IS SO NICE I CANT STOP LISTENING TO IT😅😅😅
one of my absolute favorites
Perfect! Would you be able to share the sheet music, please?
I found it in the RAD Discovering Repertoire 2 book: www.radenterprises.co.uk/collections/discovering-repertoire-4/products/discovering-repertoire-level-2-printed-music?variant=40849568039075 Alternatively, you could download a free copy of the full score from IMSLP, but there are so many pages to leaf through looking for one variation!
Ah, very nice, and a big WOW for the fancy fingering! Nice even tempo, very important! Thank you for posting! Greetings from canada.
Thank you so much! This variation definitely requires a lot of quality time with the metronome. :) Happy Canada Day! I'm looking forward to visiting your beautiful country in a few weeks. 🍁
Very god!
Beautiful notes and music!
is there any way i could get the music sheets? i love this a lot🤭🤭
I found it in this book: shop.radusa.org/product/books/vocational-graded-syllabus-music-books/intermediate-music-book/ You can also download the full score of The Pharaoh's Daughter from IMSLP, but I am having trouble locating the correct excerpt in a PDF of 158 pages! 🎶
@@recitalsbyrebecca thanks!!!!
Absolutely lovely ♥️
You're one of my favourite pianists, I've been playing for about 5 months now, and the way you play and pieces you pick are so nice
Thank you so much! Happy practicing 😊
Is this a binary meter?
It's in 6/8 and definitely has that feeling of two big beats per measure
Hey! I'm playing this for a recital in 2 days!
That's great!!! All best wishes for a successful performance. :)
Beautifully played!
