December 16th, 1944 marked the day that the German offensive through the Ardennes began. Generally known as the Battle of the Bulge, the offensive took the allied forces by surprise. Moreover, due to the bad weather the Allied forces were unable to put one of its most potent Forces into action. These Forces were the Air-Forces of both the USAAF and RAF. The 8th Air Force in particular was held ...

Some disclaimers: It is by no means accurate! 8th AF are the planned routes and timings, not the actual routes and timings flown. All other flightpaths are just straight lines from and to their respective bases and target areas. Take-off and land times though, are those mentioned in reports. Most of bomber command flight paths are assumed, based on a single Squadron report of that Group. Having...

Today marks the 78th aniversary of the mission flown by the 8th AF on 24 December 1944. It was the largest mission flown ever. While listening back the clips, I realized I seem to have some trouble in pronouncing 487th BG. Most of the time I said 437th instead. Link to my webcast series on this mission: ruclips.net/p/PLLnicIpUtw_caT3V8hnAPPb6F4hW8asqI Also: in second half of 2023 my book will b...

The flight overhead Belgium. The entire Attacking Force was larger than Belgium is in width. Some Groups are overtaking others. This can be explained due to the fact they were flying at a greater altitude and subsequently speed differences.

This was my Dad's first sortie/mission
Prachtige visualisatie
WOW...So many planes in the air. Great job on videos,
Nice work on this series. Learning about this mission my Dad flew in. Pilot B-17 PPF 447BG 740 SQ.
Love your details. Great job. Watching them ALL. ..more to go LOL....Learning about my Dads missions. Eldon Henningsen.
Seen 2 planes my Dad flew on video but he flew a different plane that day. In video is Blonde Bomber II. Cock O the Sky...K on back tail is the 447TH BG 710 SQ ....He flew B-17 #42-97596 PPF Ship ....mission, Airfield Babenhausen Germany on Dec 24, 1944.
Wow.
Great job !
I'd like to animate a group assembly. I don't think it's been done before from individual aircraft to fully formed group. I've got it plotted from 390th data from a June 44 mission.
Wow! That would be something indeed. I do agree with you. Don't think it has done before, but you've done it? Congrats, is there a possibility to watch it?
@@joostderaaf I have plots only for every 30 seconds for a 21 ship form-up around RAF Framlingham. Got a position for every 5 minutes off a navigation log, plotted 1/2 needle turns, and used a template showing 30 second run at 150 mph. It matched the positions in a most satisfying way.
@@joostderaaf, are your videos screen captures of Google Earth playbacks? I can plot them on GE
@@nelsonde It is a *.KMZ file on Google Earth which allows me to play it. I used "manycam" to capture the video screen.
@@joostderaaf, then it will be done, but you'll need to be patient...
Blijft mooi!
Wow.
Great job on this total project! I am very impressed with the detail that you provided. You should be very proud of your accomplishment. I hope many people will get to see this series and learn about the bravery and all out effort that went into the mission.
Thanks for all of your efforts on this series. It is wonderful to have so much detail. My father was a pilot in the 357th Fighter Group. He was on active duty at this time and may well have been on the mission.
This series is terrific, thank you. It's really a model for a complete analysis of a mission. A feature I especially like with these latest entries is the photo series of the bomb drops.
Thanks for putting all of this together. My uncle was part in this mission with the 452nd!
Do you do requests? There's a mission I have been researching for quite some time.
Great work, Joost!
Well worth the wait, thank you
Nice job!!! Very interesting!!! Awesome research work!!
Thank you!
Wasn't the February 3, 1945 Larger approximately 2000 planes than 12/24/44 ? I was on the 2/3/45 and I think also on the I think on 12/44
Hi, Not it was not. 24th Dec 1944 saw over 2000 Bombers and around 850 fighters for support airborne whereass Feb 3rd 1945 saw 1437 Bombers and 948 fighters airborne (Source mighty eighth war diary)
Which unit did you flew ?
490 Bomb Group 849th Squadron
When we were flying maybe we were told in the briefing of the magnitude of these missions. I have no memory of those details. We took off. got in line for the formation, and hoped to return to base.
Respect for what you did.. Thank you. I think I found your name for Dec 24th (you were a pilot?) I have a Spiegel listed as flying with 43-38150, flying in the 93rd CBW "D" Group, Low squadron.
Brilliant, must have taken a lot of time, looking forward to the next addition.
These narratives, and your website, are very impressive. I've returned to my research on the 390th BG, in part motivated by your project.
nicely done
