2024 White Lake Water Ski and Tubing Highlights
Family camp at White Lake is an annual highlight that's been on-going for about 18 years. Water skiing and tubing are always highlights, and 2024 was extra special with new campers from Nanaimo, Pembroke, and the Netherlands. Woo hoo!

Jim K, one of my colleagues on the Cascade Bird Box Team, visited the box today to download the latest videos. Jim reported that the solar collector and motorcycle battery are working well - the battery is drawn down overnight to power the infrared illumination, but it comes back to 100% during the day. That's encouraging, especially since we've had cloudy weather lately.
Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls

The cool thing is, you drive across miles of prairie and then, boom... there it is. A huge gash in the ground. We stopped at a shopping mall that had a nearby picnic area on the edge of the canyon. It's a long way down! This is the last video from our epic RV trip. We put 11,000 km on the clock.

A group of volunteers builds nesting boxes for barn owls, one of which was monitored in 2024. The male owl brought a steady stream of food to his mate through January and February as she incubated her eggs. We banded two owlets at the same time the video batteries were changed, but only one owlet was ever seen outside the box. Notice a leg band on the owlet, but neither adult has a band. The strong owlet controlled the food supply, which reduced its sibling to a weakened state. The strong owlet was eventually forced away by its parents after some interesting scuffles.

As the pair continued their rekindled love-life, we cleaned the accumulated pellets from the box to provide more space. The owls would eventually fill the box completely if it was not cleaned periodically (biannually). As expected, we found three juvenile carcasses in the box. After they forced one owlet out of the box, the adult pair reconnected and began a second brood.

We stopped overnight at a Loves RV park near Brigham City, Utah. The park seemed very new. We had spent the day touring the nearby Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, and highly recommend it if you're ever in the viscinity. The Mormon Tabernacle is a prominent feature in downtown Brigham City, and the surrounding mountains are spectacular.

We stayed overnight in a small RV park in Green River. A large trains chugged by on a nearby track, so I had to take a closer look. We were off again the next morning, and stopped somewhere for a rest. The drone gave me a view of the nearby badlands. Flint Hills Wildlife Reserve

Saw the sign... turned off the main highway. This reserve was about 5 km out of our way, but we needed a break from driving across the prairie. We missed the turn into the parking lot, so had to drive to the next little town before finding a large-enough turnaround for the RV and toad. It was a nice walk...

That river is so low…we used to launch in the shadow of that bridge…the confluence with the Rio Grande is a mile to the west

I grew up in Barstow, and this was a major party-spot for us in the 70's and 80's. A lot of good and crazy times. Thanks for posting this...
Yeah, we heard a little about Sawtooth's wild history upon our first visit in 2015. We have had nothing but great stays there.
