Jonah Berger: What makes people talk and share?
When we care we share, according to Jonah Berger, author of "Contagious: Why Things Catch On". Absorbed with the role social influence plays in spreading the word about products, ideas or behaviours, Berger believes it is psychology that drives people to share rather than the technology itself. Anger and excitement can be motivators, as can things that make us look smarter. And stories with a message people like can all help build a brand's message and ultimately make it go viral.
A marketing professor at Wharton's School of Business, Berger's research interests include consumer decision-making, product adoption and abandonment, social contagion, viral marketing, and word of mouth....

I am in need of an accurately captioned version of this great video so we can include it in a course about digital citizenship for college faculty. Could you kindly enable the Community Caption feature so I can edit the auto-captions? If you could please reply and let me know, that would be great. Thank you.

If you log in to amara.org and plug in the RUclips link, I've added captions there. You can play the captioned video from that site too. Also, the owner of this video could use those captions, but in my experience they only very rarely do. It's pretty sad.

Its a hard sell, but crowd sourcing education and technological involvement is going to happen whether the schools are ready for the change or not. As a tech savy parent with an educator spouse I see quite clearly the failures of our public education systems. I know that the more the School systems push back innovations for scan tron reports the more likely they will be creating a generation of alienated young people who will get their technological fixes from sources that we are a society will not really want. Not only that but they will be ill prepared for entrance into the working community as they will be seriously lacking in the know how to function even in the most basic sense with the technology of the times. I understand why School Systems are like this. They have created for themselves a closed network of rules and standards that when applied to 1980's levels of technology worked fine. Changes to that system could hamper the empire of funding they have built and might require serious organizational changes. Governments don't move quickly on the changing times and shouldn't except where education is concerned. New information is sprouting up every day and whether you are a part of a community of archaeologists or botanists or mechanics or whatever there is always something new that is learned and new ways to grow. Not only that but technology gives us great new ways to disseminate that information. Whether you use twitter on smart phones or Google Plus groups on iMacs, People today can gather and communicate on projects with others from around the world instantaneously. You are right, Crowd Sourcing projects is not cheating, its the way communities assembled to get things done since well civilization began. It should be a matter of course for youth classrooms because its used excessively in the real world. Without the skills to manage the way those groups function our children will be burdened with an almost alien concept when the enter the workforce. I am greatly interested in "alternative" educations for my daughter. She a brilliant sufferer of ADD who is in gifted programs and is completely misunderstood by a system built on cranking out clones. I am looking at online schools, home schools, and Montessori Schools as a way to get the most out of her education in these crucial years of development. Right now our public schools are making her hate learning by the constant cram and purge method of testing/learning. Generations of kids grow up struggling through what should be exciting worlds of wonder as new ideas are presented is not sustainable. I believe this year will be her last in a traditional public school where she goes from here on out is really a guess right now.
