Side Surfing at Orton Mere - Proteus Canoe Club
Brief highlights of a brilliant session on the Staunch at Orton Mere. Unusual conditions gave us a 50/50 wave, half stopper, half tongue. As usual, we made the most of it.

More slalom...well, the season's unrelenting, what can I say? Definite improvement from me, compared to last years Inter Clubs run.

Never used the backwards ferry glide on a slalom run before, certainly not in a C2. We decided that during a competition was the best time to start! Went ok. Will improve.

My first Div 1 slalom. Nervous. Error strewn. Don't like shallow, rocky courses. Scared to attack in case I break my boat, or even get slightly off line, in case I can't gather it up in time to avoid a 50...or worse. This was my 2nd run, and more aggressive than my 1st, if you can believe that! Was on to be much quicker...until the upstream gate 20. Grrrr. I've wanted to step up to harder cours...

Not much whitewater kayaking at night happening around the world. Which is a very sensible position, and one I would fully endorse. Despite this video! 🙂
Boulters Fun Day - My Biggest Ever Wave
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.8 месяцев назад
What an absolutely fantastic place! The day before, I decided my Ripper 2, which fits me well, was not the right boat for this Freestyle Fun Day. So, I tried the Club Inazone on our very modest wave at Proteus Canoe Club, Orton Mere. It was fine, so I thought, yeah, that'll do...for the biggest wave I've ever paddled! In a discipline, Freestyle, that I have no background in! Big mistake. Not sa...

We don't get this stopper normally, needs a deluge. Even then, we've traditionally kept away for safety concerns, but I always felt this was over cautious. I was right. I sent the word out we were gonna hit it and we all had a fantastic afternoon.

Hello
Hi
Hello
Hi
Nice paddling cheers.
Ta very much
Great run. Looks a decent stretch of river.
Cheers bud, yeah, it's a great stretch. My first time on the Tees.
Gnarly thumbnail mate!
Pete Atki, mate. Wields his lens as well as he does his paddle.
Great footage 👍 Subbed
Ah, cheers Grumpy, appreciate it mate
Epic video 🤙🏻
Thanks so much
Great video
Thanks again lads
Another awesome video, any thanks to Jason 👏
Thanks Deb
Section with the up 2gates then back for the down river gate seems abit weird.
We ballsed it up. Exited the upstream gate and forgot to do a high cross to the far downstream gate, so had to gather it up and improvise. I don't mind an unusual course design, we made that section look less elegant than it really was.
A great summary. All skills that need regular practice too. Thanks for sharing.
The practice thing...so true. We'll be trying to work it into our club sessions. Could've done that this evening, but we had a great surf wave. Too much fun to be had!
Really nice to see you flying the flag for C2. Not an easy kayak to work with and you made it look smooth.
Yeah, it takes some shifting about. Was shallower on the Sunday, that was tougher. Cheers.
Nicely done, lads. I was legit ducking my head when I watched you navigate those gates
Did you watch it in VR?
Brilliant. Could hear how hard you were working. Some nice moves gate to gate.
Thanks guys. I liked your boat carrying video too.
Kinnell! Well done mate. That looked tough. Love the bleeping!
Cheers Nige, yeah, tough doing K1 and C2. There's another bleep in the upcoming C2 video!
Amazing 😁
Cheers Phil, you'd like WWR y'know. Balls out thrash down whitewater. You could be good at this.
Brilliant run. Patch the leaky boat and you will boss it!
Cheers guys, will do!
Very well done guys!
Cheers Tom
Great evening, gonna miss that stopper when the rains die down.
I'll never forget being held in it....whilst taileeing....whilst facing upstream. None of it made sense. Such a cool feeling.
Nice wave. GREAT boat. My trick for using other boats is to make urself some inflatable hip blocks out of locksmiths air bags...(for cracking car doors open enough to break into cars)...and make some velcro straps for them. Then you can jumo into any boat pump up the hip blocks to suit and ur locked in to every boat. Cheap, simple and works.
Interesting idea, I'll look into that. Cheers.
I bought some of these and tried them this evening. Works great, thanks.
What a mental, mental day!
Yeah, so glad we went. Even if we return many times, we'll never forget our first Boulter's.
You really are MAD, all of you! from one very proud but worried mum
If you see that wave and DON'T paddle it...that's when you question your sanity! Thanks Mum. xxx
Breathtaking.
Yes, and that's a problem. Cos breathing's pretty important!
Great video Jason.
Cheers guys, love your videos too
You're all nuts😂😂
Well done son xxx
Nice paddling Jason. Have a great Christmas!
Cheers guys, I liked your spaghetti junction video! Merry Christmas 🎄
I really enjoy your videos! Merry Christmas to you all. Hope to see you in Suffolk next year to paddle the Stour 😃🛶
Hi, thanks so much for your comment. The Stour is definitely on my to do list. Maybe an open canoe trip over a couple of days. So many trips to do... Merry Christmas to you too, take care.
Great video, thanks, ive only done the intro to WW at LV just this autumn and hoping to do the "developing" when it warms up again (lol). I am sure I have come across some of your videos at LV, i think (i have watched many LV vids), ya don't really forget the name , Proteus. Anyhoo, just wondering, do you guys request or have control of the sluice gate or is it just a hit an hope?
Thanks very much. Yeah, I've done some LV videos, my Legacy and Olympic assessments and my first time on Olympic on my own (gulp) We don't have control of the sluice unfortunately, it's hit and hope. It varies a great deal, as you can imagine. I suppose that's a good thing in many ways. Every time we turn up, we never quite know what we're going to get. And the excitement when it's raging in just the right way...wonderful. Merry Christmas!
Erm eddy river left I think
Heh, oh yeah. (Technically, maybe not river left either I s'pose.) Add it to the litany of hyperbolic hyperbollocks I've uploaded thus far.
What a great video to show the intro to river races.i has a get 1st race with the great support the the sharks club and just can’t see why many other would not love this experience. Well done. See you in 2024.
Thanks Alistair, I agree on both counts; the support of clubs is lovely and it's a very enjoyable kayak/canoe discipline. Let's spread the word.
Great race - looks like you had fun.
Cheers guys. We were most pleased that we were able to use a C2 WWR. We'd brought a slalom C2 as back up because we didn't know how we'd get on in one of those boats. It went pretty well.
that water looks clean
Looks like a great weekend and super water level. Thanks for posting.
Cheers guys, it was indeed. I much prefer Town Falls when I can only see white in front of me. Not keen on rocks!
Great video brilliant memories !
One of my favourite lochs to paddle, I absolutely love Loch Maree. Great video, you've now got me itching to go back up there! Cheers 🛶👍
Thanks Tony, glad you enjoyed it. We reminisce about that day once in a while. I have one regret...I intended to paddle to the island in the loch in an island in the Loch but would've been a bugger of a portage due to the terrain. I expect I'll regret that for a looong time.
Hope your bruises weren't as bad as mine x
Where you at hpp Monday evening?
Nah man, err...couple of weeks ago last visit. Should get up there more often but got a canoe club to run!
Really nice video of an eventful run down the Tryweryn. Great post Jason!
Thoroughly entertaining video Jase!
This was absolutely beautiful and relaxing. Thanks for sharing your lovely day with us.
A lovely day, and a lovely comment. Thanks.
We Americans are puritanical? 😂
I was engaging in a 'comedic' cliche, I do apologise! My wife and I talk some absolute rubbish to entertain each other. It's fair to say I'm 'full of it'!
@@jasonkayaker Lol. It’s all good. We Yanks have a special place in our hearts for you Brits. ❤️ You’re just different enough to feel a bit foreign and exotic. But we speak your language (kind of). And our culture spun off from yours, so even though you’re a bit foreign and exotic to us, at the same time you’re similar enough to feel familiar and that’s comforting somehow. 😂
Kept hearing The Boatman by The Levellers in my head whilst watching this. It all looks very serene and tranquil. Do the septic tanks really say 'tidbits'? 🤔
Hey man. Had The Levellers on at the river the other day, they fit so well with the vibe, I agree. It was a very chilled day, blissed out. They do say 'tidbits' but I'm wrong about the reason, its apparently not because they can't bear to say tit! 2 minutes Googling tells me that they're right and we're wrong! Original English was 'tyd bit'. I'm sticking with the tit though, cos, well...tits.
@jasonkayaker I'll give the Americans that on this occasion. There is no excuse for using the word Soccer, though. Unless, of course, it's International Superstar Soccer.
Google tells me the word 'soccer' is actually a British export. That has to be a lie. Hang on, Google is American, right?
@@tomtoshack Yeah, it's from 'soc' which is from association football, right? But, I see your point! I don't know what's more ridiculous...that we now rightly feel a deep sense of mistrust in anything we read... ...or that we historically used to think we could trust what we read!
Really helpful and its nice to see that they're not looking for perfection. Some of my fellow club members are embarking on the assements themselves and stressing themselves over these - and they are very good WW kayakers/payboaters
Nowhere near perfection. They just wanna make sure you're not a hazard or completely out of your depth, I think. And, actually, the course isn't that difficult.
Agreed Jason, it's a great starting point for new whitewater paddlers. Some interesting drops and flows that require a bit of thinking for a new paddler. Glad you had fun.
Yeah, it's great for progression I think. When HPP is a step too far.
I'm planning a trip up here in August. Just said to the wife there's aren't many videos of Loch Maree and lo and behold you upload this. Brilliant video. Just makes me want to go all the more.
Oh, cheers LL. No, there's surprisingly few videos, I noticed that too! Was one of the best days on the water I've ever had. Hope you have a great time.
