HERE IS MY SIMPLIFIED VERSION OF THE BLUE JAYS 2025 ROSTER “TO DO” LIST IN THE OFF SEASON! I do believe that by all accounts, It can be safely stipulated that Blue Jays Management have approximately 60-65 million dollars to play with as it relates to the prior two seasons of spending. So I will outline in positions where in my opinion work needs to be done… OUTFIELD--> Since Springer and Varsho are automatically penciled in, and possibly Loperfido filling in at best in role of a 4th outfielder ….. we need to obtain in free agency or by trade ONE ADDITIONAL SLUGGER outfielder. While names like O’Neill, Teo Hernandez, Vertugo and Santander comes to mind naturally….. but hear me out on Juan Soto (assuming Vladdy extends prior to talks) What’s to stop Management from persuading Soto to accept a $500-600 million dollar contact with a deferral plan ( Ohtani style) of say $400 million of it deferred to the contract expiration. It can be explained to him that Vladdy will be there for the long term, and easing that financial obligation annually would afford the club the luxury to add more valuable pieces to reinforce aspirations to be a perennial Championship caliber team. It’s not like Soto is currently not a multi-millionaire already, and certainly an annual salary of 10-20 million over say the next 10 years won’t hurt either! INFIELD--> The debate continues whether Vladdy can be their 3rd baseman or remain at 1st base, but one thing is for certain. Management must obtain either a SLUGGER 3rd baseman or 1st/DH guy. They most definitely should NOT try to sign a pure DH like a Volgelbach, as it would only repeat the mistake made in 2024! Of course there’s the Bo dilemma but let’s just assume he is part of the 2025 roster, as trading him in the offseason would be tantamount to malpractice at his all time lowest trade value! This all means that pencilled in are Bo, Vladdy and safely Horwitz at 2nd base. A first base/DH guy like Alonso or Rhys Hopkins (assuming Vladdy a 3rd baseman) or the most alluring, a dude like Adames who certainly would be capable of playing 3rd, or Bregman even. I see Clements to be retained in the roster but in a similar role as Luperfido. CATCHER-->While Kirky has proven over a large sample size to be more than capable to endure at least 50-65% of the catching responsibilities offensively and even more defensively, and Serven while defensively and calling a game more than adequate, kinda screams that we need another Catcher with at least league average batting, and there is nothing wrong with re-signing Jansen too! STARTING PITCHER--> It’s obvious that Berrios, Bassitt and Gausman are automatic 1,2,3 in the order for now. This leaves room for 2 more to pencil into the starting rotation. One can be somewhat confident, assuming no future surprises, that Francis can be relied on as the 4th. Which leaves the final SP piece to be either by trade or free agency. Considering one of Rodriguez, Manoah and Tiedmann is just not a viable option. I don’t think Rodriguez can be relied on in that role yet, nor can either Manoah and Teidmann be as well with current injury history/rehab etc! Not to mention having Bloss as a dark horse as yet another contender for a SP position! BULLPEN--> This is when it kinda depends what expert you choose to believe or rely on. The sure bets to definitely pencil into the 2025 season are; Green, Cabrera and Romano!!! One can argue that even Little may be included. One can further contend that perhaps Rodriguez may be included, being he would be well equipped to give you innings as well! One must also consider a reversal of fortune with Swanson demonstrating he deserves another shot at the Roster, most likely determined in Spring Training. All that being said…The bullpen desperately require minimally 3-4 more dependable pitchers that at minimum are proven assets as of late,and of the 3-4, at least 1 more high leverage guy, and one more multi inning guy at the very least, and it would be in the team’s best interest to re-sign Yarbrough!!!! IN CONCLUSION…. The following is absolutely necessary for the 2025 Season to compete at the highest level as a Championship caliber club; 1 BASHER Outfielder (via trade or FA) 1 BASHER Infielder (via trade or FA) 1 Starting Pitcher (4th minimally) 1 Catcher (average hitting minimally) 3-4 Bullpen arms (minimally 1 leverage, 1 multi inning and 1-2 others proven) WITH A CERTAIN STARTING LINEUP MOST LIKELY ; Gausman Berrios Bassitt Francis Vladdy Bo Horwitz Jimenez OR Wagner Clements Springer Varsho Loperfido Kirk Greenp Romano Cabrera Little Rodriguez WITH Loperfido, Clements and one of Jimenez or Wagner(most likely Jimenez depending on Spring Training performances) as bench pieces WITH Rodriguez and Little as uncertainties to be Bullpen guys or designated initially to AAA As for Swanson, he too would be appraised during Spring Training and appropriately designated accordingly. And finally, let’s not forget that Orelvis Martinez may very well also enter into the starting lineup sweepstakes , again depending on his Spring Training performance. As well as Rodon who is apparently as of late mashing in AAA!
